When my dad died on October 22 I lost more than I can even comprehend. Forever is a hard word to think, much less say. Likewise, saying thank you is not really enough for all of you here at NMC who have supported me in this time. The plant the college sent sits in my living room, reminding me of the woods my dad loved and what is good in the world. My dad would have liked that. I know I do.
Now that 2014 open enrollment is over, if you are changing to the High Deductible Health Plan and had a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for unreimbursed medical expenses during 2013, remember that you must use up all the funds in the FSA before you can start funding your Health Savings Account (HSA) in 2014. As part of the second annual Embrace the Dream collaboration founded upon the values of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College presents the Created Equal Film Festival, January 23-26. All films will be shown at 7:00 pm in Milliken Auditorium free of charge, with a final discussion program on January 26 at 2:00pm with Dr. David Pilgrim from the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University. All films are screened with subtitles, and the Milliken auditorium is equipped with a T-coil hearing loop for individuals with hearing impairments.
Friday Forums will occur the first Friday of every month through April. These forums are brought to you by the Center for Instructional Excellence which supports student learning by encouraging faculty-driven initiatives, promoting development of faculty knowledge, and recognizing the achievement of excellence. Increasingly, these tools include digital technology used in face-to-face and online courses, technology that you may already augment with tools of your own. To help us determine how to make the best use of our technology and yours, we ask you to take 10 to 15 minutes to complete a questionnaire.

Adjunct Communications Instructor Alissia J.R. Lingaur, is happy to announce that her novel, The Trainstop, is now available through Amazon’s Kindle library. The story follows five closely related women as they try to rebuild their lives after a family tragedy.

At Opening Conference, the My Academic Plan (MAP) team will demo a new tool to support student success and retention. MAP helps students navigate NMC’s curriculum requirements and gives them the academic advice they need to succeed, allows students to track their progress towards degree completion, gives advisors new capabilities to counsel students more successfully and provides interactive “what if” scenario planning.
NMC Hip Hop presents The Drop, a free demonstration, at 7:45 p.m. Dec. 9 in Milliken Auditorium.
Hip hop dance is movement to hip hop music. Instructor Joedy Annis says NMC hip hop students have been working hard to create amazing choreography and freestyle movements. The audience can expect fun and crazy hip hop moves. (more…)

As part of its monthly film series in collaboration with CMU Public Broadcasting, the Dennos Museum Center presents Our Fires Still Burn: The Native American Experience on Thursday, December 5, at 7:00pm. The film is free to attend and includes light refreshments and a panel discussion with the filmmaker. Milliken Auditorium now features a T-coil hearing loop for those with hearing impairments.
