Have you ever wondered how your leave balances are reported in Self Service?  Here’s an explanation which might help you understand it better using the following example.

Vacation Leave with Pay Hours 258.00 43.12 40.00 261.12

The Available Beginning Balance for each employee is different.  It captures your leave balance on the pay where your Seniority Date falls, which reflects the first date you were in your FT job, not the first date when you started at the College.   For this employee, the Seniority Date is 10/29.

  • On 10/29 of 2013 she had a sick leave balance of 283.70 hours.  Since that date, she earned 3.7 hours per pay for 7 pays = 25.90.  Since 10/29, she took 36 hours of sick leave.  283.7 = 25.9 – 36 = 273.6 hours.
  • On 10/29 of 2013 she had a vacation balance of 258.00 hours.  Since that date, she earned 6.16 hours per pay for 7 pays = 43.12.  Since 10/29, she took 40 hours of vacation.  258 +43.12 – 40 = 261.12 hours.  The same rule applies to the sick leave balance.

Keep in mind that you may have been in a situation during a pay period that you did not accrue leave time, such as in an unpaid status or on Wage Continuation, NMC’s short term disability program.  In that case you would not accrue the full amount of leave as you do for a pay period with your regular number of hours.

Unfortunately you can’t go back on old pay stubs to see your leave balances at that time because Self Service is showing the current balances.  You could try to remember each pay to check this to see if the time you accrue and the time you submitted on that pay stub equals the balances you see.

Check your own leave balances under the Employee Menu on Self Service.  I hope this helps you apply this formula to your own leave balances.
