Certificates in computer support and cybersecurity specialization and Esports management will debut at NMC next year, offering students several additional paths to employment.
On Monday, NMC’s Board of Trustees approved the computer support specialist and cybersecurity specialist certificates. At one semester and one year to complete, respectively, both align with NMC’s strategic goal of offering future-focused education — more classes in shorter formats.
‘We’re giving students the opportunity to have quicker completion,” said Vice President for Educational Services Stephen Siciliano. Employers also seek a faster path to credentials.The computer support specialist certificate will reduce the time to earn a credential from nearly two years to one semester.
Both certificates will help students find employment in Michigan’s strong IT industry — multiple IT careers are among Michigan’s hot 50 jobs with the best prospects through 2030.
The Esports certificate builds upon NMC’s success with varsity Esports teams, and puts NMC at the forefront of Esports as an academic discipline. The certificate is designed to feed into a bachelor’s degree in Esports production that Ferris State University launched last fall. Lake Michigan College starts an associate degree program this year.
“So many potential students or current students are gamers. This will be a different path for them, to take something they love doing and make it into a career,” said Terri Gustafson, NMC’s Esports director. NMC entered varsity Esports competition last year with two teams, and expanded to five this year. Nineteen students played varsity this semester, each earning a $500 scholarship per semester.
Students would potentially also receive six IT industry recognized certifications that employers value. These certifications were recently approved by the State of Michigan as a measurement for student completion.
The cybersecurity certificate creates another area of specialization for students, and allows them to begin working in the field after a year. Students could also choose to stack the certificates toward associate degrees.
“The demand for this is not going down. There’s a lot of potential for students,” Trustee Rachel Johnson said of cybersecurity, calling it one of the most expensive risks employers must manage.
Both CIT certificates use existing curriculum, meaning NMC incurs no additional costs. Gustafson said five new Esports courses are now in development and she expects the certificate to be offered in January 2024, at the same time as the CIT certificates. Job opportunities in Esports exist in marketing, accounting and graphic design, Gustafson said.

Join the NMC Marine Technology Society on Monday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m. in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center room 106/107 for a live virtual tour of Schmidt Ocean Institute’ s new 360-foot R/V Falkor (too) during its current expedition researching deep-sea coral off the coast of Puerto Rico. This is a rare opportunity to explore a research vessel while it’s underway with a chance to talk to scientists, marine technicians, ROV pilots and crew. There will be food. All are welcome. Kudos to Bridget Sova! Bridget has stepped in this year to coordinate the Blair Elementary Mentoring program and planned an amazing end-of-year campus tour for the 5th graders. The students visited three campuses and were introduced to 10 of NMC’s programs throughout their visit. These students may very well be first generation students that before this program, never saw college as an option. Bridget showed them the possibilities in Health Care, Automotive, Marine Tech, Culinary and much more! The amount of coordination across campus it took, along with patience and creative thinking was impressive. We are so lucky to have Bridget on our team.
Kudos to Krissy Steinebach, Lindsey Lipke and Emilee Bruner! I would like to take a moment to thank and recognize Krissy, Lindsey (both from the Business Office) and Emilee (from Auxiliary Services) for graciously and expeditiously getting check payments out to new vendors for the Big Little Hero Race this Saturday. These three individuals had different pieces of the process to complete by collaborating and communicating (across campus) with each other to get the entire process done on a very tight timeline. Lindsey had to approve the new vendors, Emilee had to get them set up in Banner and Krissy had to process the checks. They worked together as a “well oiled machine” and accomplished this task in record time. Thank you all for your hard work (day-in and day0out)! It is appreciated beyond words!

Damon Livingston, the NMC varsity Esports Madden 23 player, will be competing in the NJCAA-E Championship match against Hutchinson Community College on Saturday, April 22 at 6 p.m. in the NMC Esports lab.
Damon finished the league regular season undefeated and has won his quarterfinal and semi-final matches 3-0. His opponent in the championship also ended the regular season and first two rounds of the playoffs undefeated, setting up a competition between the #1 and #2 seeds in the playoffs. This is the first league championship game for the NMC Esports program.

The NMC Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Big Band will be performing their final concert this semester on April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium. Selections by Niehaus, Yasinitsky, Hooper, Garling, Mingus, Goodwin, Beethoven, Shorter, Kubis, Jarvis, Barbieri, Lewis and Norman will be featured. The bands are hot and the music is cool so come on out and celebrate America’s premier art form: JAZZ!
Doors open at 7:00pm and the show starts at 7:30pm with a brief intermission between groups!
Tickets at the door are $15 for Adults, $10 for Seniors and free for NMC students with their student ID. Tickets can be purchased at simpletix.com.

Calling all graduates! Public Relations is looking for volunteers to have their photo taken before this year’s Commencement ceremony. We are planning to meet on Friday, May 5 at 3 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum. NMC President Nick Nissley will be on location with us so you can have your photo taken with him while discussing your post-graduation plans! As a bonus, you’ll get a sneak peek on the new Commencement setup we are unveiling this year.
All graduates are welcome; bring yourself, your fellow graduates, your cap/gown/tassel and commemorate this moment! Photos will be shared with you afterwards.

The Honors & Leadership Convocation for the class of 2023 will be held on Friday, May 5 in the Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum. A reception will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the ceremony following at 5:30 p.m.
Recognition will be given for the accomplishments of students both inside and outside of the classroom over the last year, including academic area awards, student groups, leadership awards and more.
