Northwestern Michigan College President Timothy J. Nelson:
It is with sadness that I share with you news the death of Shirley Okerstrom.
Shirley played a pivotal role in the life of Northwestern Michigan College, serving on the NMC Board of Trustees for 22 years, as the Board’s liaison to the NMC Foundation for 14 years and as a Foundation Board member for eight years. Her dedication was particularly directed to the Dennos Museum Center, and she also served on the Cultivation Committee for the Great Lakes Campus Campaign.
Recognition of her talents and service can be found in the naming of the Fine Arts Building in her honor and the 2004 installation of the Nexus sculpture. She received the college’s highest honor in 2003 as she was named a Fellow and also received the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1999.

Tickets are $25 advance, $28 at the door and $22 for museum members are plus fees. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Museum Box office at 231-995-1553 or on line at www.dennosmuseum.org, also at 1-800-836-0717 or www.MyNorthTickets.com.
The Dennos Museum Center will present Making Paper Dance: The Art of Pop-Up Books, January 19 – April 6, 2014.
Pop-up books have been engaging readers and non-readers alike for over 800 years. The fact that this form of book art has thrived, speaks to the fascination we have with the art of transforming two dimensional paper forms into a continuing chain of three-dimensional possibilities. Making Paper Dance: The Art of Pop-Up Books is both a nostalgic homage to early movable books and a view into the dynamic and ever-evolving world of pop-ups created in the 21st century.
The following employees are celebrating an anniversary soon. Please join us in congratulating them!

Kudos, to Michelle Autry for going above and beyond when we were in a pinch by helping a new adjunct faculty member with her online courses. Michelle was extremely helpful and worked on this on her own time.
Kudos and deep appreciation to returning NMC Technology Help Desk (THD) Staff members Joseph Berry, David Ulrich, Teresa Wadysz, and Brian Kindt. These staff members are part of a team that covers 115 hours per week of Help Desk Support answering questions and entering tickets on issues as diverse as Password resets, Wireless access, Virus attacks, and Banner form questions. Although, it is not their responsibility to know all the answers, these four staff members have worked to develop a broad understanding and knowledge base of many things technical at NMC. Thank you, team for all your hard work and commitment to the students, staff, faculty and community members of Northwestern Michigan College. You Rock!
At Mid-Year Conference this week, we discussed how the start of the new semester can be a stressful time for our students. But we know that this can also be a challenging time for our staff and faculty as well, especially when we couple work issues with other life issues like finances, the holidays, substance abuse, work/life balance, and family challenges.
For those of you who may have missed it (or for anyone who wants to watch it over and over), a video of the presentations at Mid-Year Conference from Monday, January 6 is now available on the NMC Intranet (login required.)

NMC’s very own Carolyn A. Drake and Marcia A. Borell have worked together to publish a children’s picture book about Arctic wildlife titled “Cold, Cold North.” The story is told with informative verse and introduces a variety of animals that are a living part of the Arctic landscape. The verse encourages the reader and child to express the feeling of the words while introducing some uncommonly spoken words. The flow of the verse is enhanced by the crayon illustrations.
The book is available at local bookstores and major online booksellers.
Don’t forget to attend Mid-Year Conference, Monday, January 6 at the Hagerty Center, at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast will be served.
