Curious about other cultures? Love to learn about places around the world? Have a spare bedroom? Host a Chinese student from TCAPS’ high school exchange program with Dalian University of Technology in Dalian, China. There are four male students still in need of host families. Hosts will receive a $200/month reimbursement to help offset costs. Both short and long term hosts are wanted.

Dennos Museum hosts singer/songwriter Lee Murdock

Michigan Global Awareness Consortium kicks off 2013-14 academic year series
On Wednesday, October 16, 2013 the Michigan Global Awareness Consortium offers the first presentation of its 2013-14 academic year’s series. We are pleased to welcome Mr. Timothy Fitzgerald Young, who is the founder and president of Food for Thought. Passport Student Lecture Series continues on October 17 with focus on Russia
NMC Outreach Services’ Passport Student Lecture Series continues in October with international student Iris Perederiy who will speak to attendees about Russia.
The lecture will take place on Thursday, October 17 from 12:15 – 1:00 pm in Founders Hall, room 110. Guests are invited to bring lunch and/or coffee to enjoy while they listen.

Soccer Club has 3-game weekend sweep
NMC Soccer Club completed a 3-game weekend sweep by defeating Cornerstone University Reserves 3-1 on Saturday and defeating Lake Superior State University Soccer Club 2-1 and 4-3 on Sunday. NMC Soccer Club travels to Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University this weekend to play against club teams from both schools. (more…)

Welcome to NMC Gwendolyn!
Gwendolyn Thurston joined NMC as Human Resource Assistant – Supplemental on September 16, 2013. She will be job sharing with Heather Hess, Human Resource Assistant – Supplemental, with both being responsible for managing Student, Supplemental and Adjunct Faculty new hires. Gwendolyn may be reached at gthurston@nmc.edu. or at the HR Department 995-2612.
Gwendolyn recently moved here from Marquette, Michigan where she was employed by Rio Tinto, as the Human Resources Coordinator for a new nickel and copper mine. Day hiking the North Country Trail is a favorite activity of hers and she is looking forward to exploring the trails here. Kayaking Lake Michigan, snowshoeing, stand up paddle boarding and rowing crew with the Lake Leelanau Rowing Club are all on the bucket list for the coming year. She is looking forward to meeting new people as well as taking continuing education classes at NMC.

NMC Employees can access a spreadsheet for easy quick weekly tracking here. You will still need to enter your daily miles on walkingworks.com, but the spreadsheet can help you track your daily miles, so that you can update the challenge website accurately. Daily miles can be back-logged, meaning if you sign up today, you can earn miles for every day you completed the healthy behaviors since Sept 16th, when the challenge began.
-Mark your calendars!! October 18th will be our 2nd annual Wellness Expo. It will be held at the Oleson Center. More info to come next week.

The value proposition and our business model

A fundamental question for any organization, profit or not, is, “What do we do for whom at what value?” The answers to this ultimately define the business model for the enterprise. This then informs the cost structure, the market, and the pricing and revenue practices for the organization. The current trend of students paying more in absolute and proportionate share of the cost to operate the college has limits and may postpone answering this fundamental question (College Board Advocacy & Policy Center, 2012). In community colleges, tuition alone does not generate enough revenue to create a positive net margin. There is a saying, “No margin, no mission.”
The traditional revenue model for community colleges is different among the 50 states. (Education Commission of the States, 2000) In Michigan, the original bargain was said to be one-third each for local, state, and students. Today, state funding is a combination of legacy and a funding distribution formula adopted in 2007. (Jonasson, 2013)
Is health care reform our ‘canary in the mine?’

When systems are in a transformative state, the underlying assumptions that influence their operations and purposes must be examined and questioned. One way to do this is to look at organizations or industries with similar characteristics and determine what we can learn and/or project from their journey. Thus, as higher education—in fact all of education—is faced with changing demands, changing demographics, technological advances and changing expectations we can look for a similar industry. I have long believed it is health care.
Consider that the federal government in 2010 passed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act. Looking at the health care reform component of this act and the sister Patient Protection and Affordability Act, is it worth asking, “What if these changes are applied to education and higher education?”

Remembering Bea Gauthier
To all,
Bea’s family, as per her request, has decided not to have as service or memorial in her honor. The Technical Division has set-up a scholarship in Bea’s name with the intent of awarding the funds we receive to a student at next year’s Auto show event. This was Bea’s passion and seemed the most appropriate way to honor her. Her family thought this would be a wonderful tribute to Bea and that “She would love that!”, yet still in keeping with her wishes for no service or celebration.
Anyone who knew her and would like to remember Bea and her years of service at NMC this way are welcome to contribute. CIE introduces Friday Forums starting this Friday, Oct. 4
Friday Forums will occur the first Friday of every month now through April. These forums are brought to you by the Center for Instructional Excellence which supports student learning by encouraging faculty-driven initiatives, promoting development of faculty knowledge, and recognizing the achievement of excellence.
This first Friday Forum will take place on Friday, Oct. 4 from noon-1:30pm, looks to answer the question: How do we support students while helping them assume the responsibility for their own learning? The conversation will focus on what our students face and how we can help them be successful in spite of the obstacles.
The forum will be held in Founders Hall 110. Lunch will be provided and good conversation is guaranteed.
