Demystifying the Financial Aid process

Thanks to Student Financial Services for hosting a Financial Aid Fair this week to guide students and their families through the FAFSA process and help students overcome financial hurdles.

These efforts help remove barriers and increase accessibility to education. NMC is a leader in providing scholarships; last year 31% of NMC students received scholarships.  All students with at least a 2.0 GPA  who apply to NMC before March 1 will receive a scholarship. The average number of public 2- year community college students who receive institutional aid throughout the United States is 5.5 percent according to the most recent National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NCES NPSAS:18-AC).

In addition to NMC scholarships and the existing State of Michigan scholarships, a new state scholarship—the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, is now available to students graduating high school this year. Eligible students will receive a minimum $1,750 plus the possibility of another $1,000, based on remaining need.

The Financial Fair will be held on Wednesday, February 8, from 4-7 p.m. in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center, rooms 106/107.

Kudos!

Kudos to Ben Post, Dan Gentry, Paul Martin and Lisa Molmen! The Information Technology Services, Systems and LAN Management, and Educational Technology teams have worked together to develop the Moodle integration with Lumens. This was a large undertaking that has been in the works for about a year. The integration to Moodle allows Extended Education students the same access to the online learning classrooms in Moodle that credit students have. This enhances the delivery of joint offerings (NMC credit classes offered through Extended Education without the credit or need for the community member to apply to the college). A huge thank you to Ben Post, Dan Gentry, Paul Martin and Lisa Molmen!

Kudos to Sally Smarsty! Thank you to Sally, her team, and the students who coordinated the Gala to Give. Extended Education is honored and humbled by the generosity of these people and the community members who attended. They raised $5,000 in College for Kids scholarships that will impact many families this summer, making fun, educational, summer learning experiences available to more students who face financial challenges. A sincere and heartfelt thank you!

Kudos to Shelly Grant, Joy Goodchild and Elizabeth Sonnabend! Shelly Grant and Joy Goodchild led the development of a database query that pulls the program data necessary to meet the Pure Michigan Talent Connect requirements. The Michigan Training Connect (MiTC) is the state’s official eligible training provider list and this database will allow NMC to quickly add programs. Entry on this page allows Michigan Works! and other state agencies to pay for training at NMC. This provides the workforce development training necessary for the region’s economy. Without these listings, NMC would NOT be listed as a provider, reducing our visibility to the community. Currently listed programs include Aviation, Engineering, Welding, Nursing, eldercare, heavy equipment and many more. Elizabeth Sonnabend played two pivotal roles. She drove this action through the strategic plan. More importantly, she has added and troubleshot programs, has served as a liaison with the State of Michigan/Michigan Works! and has also showed others how to use the system. This was a true team effort to provide the data collection necessary to implement these new programs and maintain existing ones. Michigan Works! has mentioned NMC’s efforts many times as our programs help drive their success.

Hawk Owls place 3rd at Winter Baja

This past weekend, NMC students placed third in the 42nd annual Winter Baja endurance race competition at Michigan Technological University in Houghton. Competition was stiff, with the largest participant field since 1981.

Brutally cold conditions caused catastrophic failures for many competitors throughout the day, but NMC’s dedicated faculty and staff provided the students with an engaging experiential learning opportunity.

NMC was the only community college and the only non-engineering group that competed. Areas of study represented on the team were Automotive Technology, Welding, Engineering and Business.

Watch the Winter Baja here.

Standalone UAS degree coming Fall 2023

Traverse City — A new, standalone degree for NMC’s drone education program will position it for further growth as the industry continues to expand.

Starting with the fall 2023 semester, NMC will offer an associate degree in Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), replacing the current UAS specialization within the Engineering Technology associate degree. A UAS certificate is also offered.

Creating a standalone UAS degree creates a clearer path for students and allows NMC to prepare for future industry demand, said UAS program coordinator Tony Sauerbrey.

“Going forward, the new degree will give us more flexibility to add classes as the industry changes,” Sauerbrey said. Drone operators will need additional credentials for more advanced operations, such as Beyond Visual Line of Sight, when new federal regulations are issued. That’s expected in the next few years.

Also changing is the first word of the UAS acronym. Formerly called Unmanned Aerial Systems, switching to Uncrewed keeps the college aligned with industry, Sauerbrey said. NMC also has objectives in its strategic plan that call for inclusive and equitable language across the college by 2025.

“The entire aviation industry has begun adopting new, gender-neutral terminology, from the FAA on down. As we made plans for this degree, it was perfect timing for us to make the change as well,” Sauerbrey said. “As training on UAS is further integrated at the high school level, we expect to see an increase in interest from female students.”

Currently about 60 students are enrolled in the UAS degree program, with 25 graduating in a typical year. Another 10 students are enrolled in the certificate program.

NMC first offered drone classes in 2010. The Engineering Tech degree with UAS specialty debuted in 2013. The FAA established a commercial license in 2016, and today drones are used for inspection and monitoring in multiple economic sectors, from agriculture to infrastructure. NMC’s Police Academy also offers drone operator certification to its students, the only one in Michigan to do so.

Drone delivery services are poised to take the industry another giant step forward, but the BVLOS regulations must be in place first. Because of NMC’s early adoption of UAS, last year Traverse City was selected by the Michigan Department of Transportation as one of three sites for a feasibility study of air mobility corridors.

“Traverse City floated to the top,” said Linn Smith, manager of Air, Space and Emerging Aviation Systems at MDOT. NMC’s dozen years of UAS experience topped a list of reasons to select Traverse City, including adding a rural study area to other study sites in southeast Michigan.

“Number one was the college, the work that’s been done in UAS,” Smith said.

Kudos!

Kudos to the EES Team! Extended Education kicked off registration for Winter/Spring 2023 Lifelong & Professional learning classes on Dec. 7th. Thus far EES has almost 700 individual students enrolled in Winter/Spring 2023 classes. About half of those registrations are brand new students to EES, and half are returning students. These students in total are registered in 177 individual classes. Thanks to Jackie Schenk and the team for taking so many registrations over the phone. We’re increasing the number of students who are enrolling online as well. Kudos to Shannah Vergote for all of the fantastic marketing, enews, Inside Edit, social media, and more! And thanks to our programmers, Christa Abdul-Karim, Kristy Jackson, and Elizabeth Sonnabend for putting together such a variety of high level and high interest classes.
