NMC signs reverse transfer agreements with eight Michigan universities

At a ceremony in the University Center yesterday, NMC signed “reverse transfer” agreements with seven of our current University Center partners: Central Michigan University, Davenport University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Spring Arbor University and Western Michigan University; and also with Northern Michigan University.

The agreements will formalize the process of “reverse” transferring any credits from the four-year university to NMC that complete requirements for an NMC degree or certificate. Students need simply to initiate the process of transferring the credits with their four-year institution.

A benefit of the reverse transfer process is that studies show that students who successfully complete the associate’s degree are more likely to persist and complete a bachelor’s degree.

NISOD Award winners announced

Congratulations to NMC’s three recipients of NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) awards this year.

The honorees are:
Communications Instructor Nancy Gray
Communications Instructor Kristen Salathiel
Director of Business Division and NMC Academic Affairs Sue DeCamillis

Background on NISOD

Since its inception in 1978, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) has emphasized the importance of teaching and leadership excellence in institutions of higher education. NISOD has worked to serve, engage, and inspire teachers and leaders through our conferences, publications, web services, partnerships, programs, and more. In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its first ceremony, held in conjunction with our annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, honoring and naming the individuals featured in this study as recipients of the NISOD Excellence Award. The response to that ceremony was so positive that we decided to begin what has become a celebratory tradition. We are indebted to NISOD institutions for their continuing support of this annual celebration. The Excellence Awards tradition allows us the distinct privilege of honoring so many of the world’s best in higher education.

Benefits corner

Costs associated with an unexpected illness or accident can have a serious effect on your family’s finances.  To help increase your financial protection, Northwestern Michigan College is offering eligible employees an opportunity to apply for Critical Illness and Accidental Injury insurance through Cigna effective May 1, 2013.  The enrollment period for this insurance is April 8 – 19, 2013.

Critical Illness and Accidental Injury insurance can help you pay out-of-pocket expenses not covered by traditional insurance. These plans provide a lump sum, cash payment directly to you as a result of a covered accident or serious illness. You can spend the money however you choose or use it to help pay for additional expenses such as transportation, room and board, child care, rehabilitation, and more.

This coverage is being offered to regular employees as well as adjunct and supplemental employees who have worked an average of 10 hours per week over a recent 12-month period.  It does not replace regular medical insurance or cover medical service claims, but it can supplement you with cash payments should you or your enrolled dependents experience a critical illness or accidental injury.  If you qualify for this insurance, you will have received an email from me earlier this week.

CIGNA will be holding short informational meetings at the following times.  Please RSVP by April 11th to attend one of these meetings if you think this insurance might be of interest to you and your family.   You can even enroll online following the presentation, call 1-800-754-3207, or go to http://www.yourbenefitschoices.com/NWMC

Kudos

Congratulations to the staff of Outreach Services for a job well done with the recent “Window on the World Week.” The week offered an engaging sampler of music, film, art, food and lecture that helped bring the world and a global perspective to NMC!

The most important thing that Amanda Woodruff of Records and Registration does is being someone that students can relate to. She has been this way as long as she has worked here. She understands their questions, frustrations and is always willing to go the extra mile for them. She remains calm under pressure. She questions transactions before just doing something that might end up being incorrect. She is willing to take on additional duties as assigned. Amanda is a great asset to NMC as she serves our customers with the highest respect.
