Are you an active member of MPSERS? Do you even know if you are???
You are an active member of MPSERS (the state retirement system) if…..
- You are an Adjunct Instructor, a Supplemental Employee, or a regular appointed staff or faculty member.
- You were paid by NMC in the last 12 months and had contributions to MPSERS.
- Your paycheck stub shows contributions to MPSERS and the MPSERS Healthcare Trust.
- You are not currently a MPSERS retiree.
- You are not a member of ORP (the Optional Retirement Plan with TIAA-CREF).
If you meet the criteria shown above, you will have to make a decision between 9/4 and 10/26 as to how you want your pension handled, your pension contributions handled, and your retirement health care account handled. The only way you can make this decision will be through your online MiAccount.
- If you already have a MiAccount, please be sure that you can access it – you may need to contact the retirement system to reset your password. miAccount
- If you do not have a MiAccount or can’t remember if you set one up, go online and follow the directions to find out. miAccount
- If you want help setting up your MiAccount, stop by the indicated computer lab within the following time frames – be sure to bring your MPSERS Member ID number with you.

Governor Snyder will be signing this bill on Tuesday, 9/4. If your MiAccount is set up and ready, you will be able to go online and see your MPSERS individual information and also use calculators on the MPSERS legislative changes to help you make your election decision.

Judy Arnold was a big help on move-in day at East Hall. She did a great job helping the students with their financial aid challenges and we really appreciate her hard work and dedication. Kudos to Lindsey Dickinson for organizing and executing the first ever International Student Orientation on Friday, August 24. She put together a wonderful program in which TEN new International students were invited to campus, participated in ice-breaker activities, learned about regulations, forms and procedures they need to follow according to Homeland Security/Immigration, had a great lunch where they were able to meet and mingle with the other new students, current International students and several NMC staff members, and take a tour of campus. This type of event is what helps cement a student’s involvement in NMC, and provides them with a warm welcome to our community.

Kudos to Pam Palermo for not only BEING in the office on Saturday, August 25, but also actually taking a phone call regarding a student who had been dropped unexpectedly from classes. She was able to make a couple of adjustments so the student was able to re-register for classes over the weekend and come in Monday to finalize details. The student was incredibly surprised and grateful for the “extra mile” service and, as promised, was in first thing Monday morning to follow through on their end of the bargain. It’s this kind of service that endears our students to us–even during the difficult process of applying for financial aid.

Sam Foster worked through the spring and summer learning how to use Microsoft’s Active Directory as a replacement for the Novell/ZENworks method of managing the computers on NMC’s campuses. He also spent many hours working on creating what we call a “golden image”; it is the basis for all computer software builds on campus. I am not going to pretend that I understand all the tweaking, fine-tuning and ret urns to the drawing board that Sam performed, but his work has made it much easier for us (the five SLM Desktop Support Specialists) to install software and bring our labs and classrooms on-line for the fall 2012 semester.

At last week’s first ever International Student Orientation, Kayla Hilden went above and beyond to not only offer our new students a comprehensive tour of campus, but she also offered to take time out of her schedule to walk our new students around campus to help them find their class locations. She also took students to the bookstore to help them locate books and materials for their classes and donated a calculator to a student. Kayla demonstrated incredible customer service, compassion, and true generosity of time and spirit to our students and helped them feel welcome at NMC. Well done Kayla!

Steve Kellman has been instrumental in assisting CIE creating a space on the NMC website for faculty. Now easily accessible under the “Quick Links”, clicking the “faculty resources” link takes you to the CIE web page. From there, faculty and staff have a myriad of resources including professional development instructions and resources, Faculty communication and news, and even the latest recommended book in the Global Literature series. Steve has spent countless hours guiding CIE, converting documents and assuring all links and forms are accurate and workable. The page is a work in progress, so we appreciate Steve’s continued support!!

- NMC announced there was $10,000 in scholarships available for Petroleum Technology students.
- Dr. Diane Emling joined the Social Science Department. (see 1991 photo of Diane).
50 Years Ago:
- The Michigan Council of Community College Administrators met on campus with Senator William Milliken and Representative Arnell Engstrom. Meanwhile the administrators’ families were enjoying a picnic on the patio of what is now the Tanis Building.
- For the 1961/62 academic year, 35,000 students were enrolled in Michigan’s 17 community colleges. (this compares to close to 300,000 students enrolled for credit at Michigan’s current 28 community colleges).

Do you have an interest in international travel? Want to learn more about other cultures? Get involved with NMC’s international students!
This year we welcome students from over 14 different countries around the world to NMC. These students are eager to share their experiences with members of our community and to become more involved at NMC and beyond.
For example, Sunjun from South Korea is a concert pianist and avid cyclist — he’d love to give you a mini-concert, go for a bike ride, or just talk more about his life in South Korea.
Nozgekani from Malawi will see her first snowfall here at NMC — wouldn’t it be a thrill to take her skiing or sledding!
Angel from Hong Kong and Elizabeth from Ghana have big dreams of changing the world and they’d love to tell you about them over lunch.

Osterlin Library is pleased to announce our new leisure reading collection, made possible through funding from the NMC Barbecue.
This collection of 100 books sits in the main library lobby in a newly purchased display kiosk. Titles by popular fiction authors like James Patterson, Clive Cussler, and Janet Evanovich grace the shelves, but there are also works by Anne LaMott and Elie Wiesel as well as biographies like Keith Richards’ Life. It is an eclectic, constantly changing mix of books, selected with students’ interests in mind. Come check out the collection today!

NMC Faculty and Staff are invited to attend two Open Houses at the NMC Fitness Center this fall: Thursday, August 30, noon-6:30 p.m. and Thursday, September 13, from 4 to 7 p.m.
In the new and improved facility, you’ll find new weight machines and spinning bikes, TVs to keep you moving, new carpet and fresh paint, a new welcome station, locker room improvements, expanded hours, and lower membership prices.
The NMC Fitness Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Rajkovich Physical Education Building. There’s always a fitness and exercise specialist available to assist you, and each membership begins with a fitness evaluation and instruction in proper use of all equipment which includes weight machine stations, cardio equipment, and dumbbells.
Hours of operation are Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The public can enjoy unlimited use for the months of September through December for $100 ($30 with full-time tuition waiver; $50 for Adjunct Faculty, Supplemental Employees, and NMC academic students). For more information or to purchase a membership, call NMC Extended Education at (231) 995-1700.

The seventh annual Mike McIntosh Memorial Truck and Car Show will be held, Saturday, September 8 at NMC’s Automotive Service Technology Building on Aero Park Drive, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The show is named for the late NMC Automotive instructor Mike McIntosh, who retired in 2004 after 34 years of service. McIntosh organized the first car show for the Automotive Program in 2004.
Owners are invited to enter their classic cars, 4X4s, dragsters, sports cars, modified late models, motorcycles and more. There is a $10 entry fee per vehicle. Trophies are awarded for best of show in each class. Admission free and the public is invited for food, a silent auction — including program vehicles — and door prizes for entrants. Proceeds benefit NMC’s Automotive Program. Sponsors include Canteen Services.
Student projects and vehicles are displayed in the Automotive Technology facility. The Michigan Community Blood Center is also on site with its blood bus for those eligible and willing to donate.
Show participants can register their classic car, 4X4, dragster, sports car, modified late model, motorcycle or other classic vehicle on-site beginning at 8 a.m. the day of the event.

College is about more than classes, and the fifth annual Pine Palooza student fair, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 on the green outside East Hall, will show off the extracurricular side of college life.
NMC Student Services, student groups and local businesses will be on hand to share the opportunities and services they offer to NMC students. Free food, a DJ, henna artists and a photo booth will also be part of the event, sponsored by NMC Student Life.
