Wellness Tip- Receiving Graciously

“To graciously receive is an expression of the dignity of giving.” – Deepak Chopra

When we wholeheartedly receive a gift of any kind, we show gratitude, but there’s more to it. A simple ‘thank you’ is nice but learning to cultivate the art of receiving graciously is an emotional paycheck to the giver. Expressing your appreciation in a unique and personal way might look like this: “I have the perfect spot for this picture!”, or “This mug will remind me of you every morning when I drink my coffee”, or “Your hospitality made me feel right at home.” A genuine and meaningful reflection has an energy that uplifts both the giver and the receiver.

Daily Practice: Observe the gift givers and receivers in your life. What do you notice?

Message from the President: Thank You to Holly Gorton

Dear NMC community,

We’ve undergone significant change during the last year in many aspects of our world and here at our college. Later this year the President’s Office will also face a significant change when Holly Gorton retires from NMC on June 30, 2021. As Chief of Staff to the President and the Board of Trustees she has been instrumental in many critical areas of our institution. While much of her work is done behind the scenes, her warm and engaging personality fills every room she enters and she will be greatly missed at the college. (more…)

Hagerty Center vaccination site updates

Here’s an update on COVID-19 vaccinations at NMC’s Hagerty Center.

  • The Hagerty Center vaccination site has delivered 7,500 vaccine doses so far, with 8,400 forecasted by end of the week according to the Grand Traverse County Health Department (GTCHD).
  • The State of Michigan has delivered 1 million vaccinations; 50,000 vaccinations were delivered statewide last Friday.

The biggest limiting factor at this point in delivering vaccinations is the amount of vaccine available.

To schedule an appointment, and check if additional appointments are available, please visit gtcountycovid19.com/vaccine/.

Adults 25+ can pay for college with Michigan Reconnect

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College is joining the state in offering Michigan Reconnect, an opportunity for residents over age 25 who do not have a college degree to earn it tuition-free as an in-district student or at a reduced rate if out of district.

For eligible students, the program will pay the in-district tuition rate at Michigan community colleges. NMC’s in-district tuition rate applies to Grand Traverse County residents, who also support the college through property taxes. For out-of-district students from other Michigan counties, Michigan Reconnect will pay the in-district portion of tuition. At NMC, that means about half the tuition cost is subsidized for out-of-district students.

Statewide, more than 4.1 million Michiganders are eligible. Michigan Reconnect is a step toward reaching the state’s Sixty by 30 goal, which calls for 60 percent of working-age Michiganders to have college degrees, industry-recognized certificates or other quality credentials by 2030.

Funding for Michigan Reconnect was introduced in Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s fiscal year 2020-21 budget proposal. A bipartisan group of legislators approved $30 million in state funding.

Submit applications and find out more at nmc.edu/reconnect.

Biederman building to reopen Wednesday

The Les Biederman Building on NMC’s main campus will reopen tomorrow (Wednesday) after a structural engineer assessed the building and determined it is safe. Restrooms in the building will remain closed for now while facilities make any needed repairs.

Overnight, a custodian noticed an usual situation with tiles in the 2nd floor men’s restroom and alerted facilities. The college closed the building out of an abundance of caution to investigate the cause. The structural engineer did a thorough assessment of the building today and said it is safe and can be reopened to students and employees.

Greenspire School partnership followup

The Greenspire School board unanimously approved a lease agreement for space at NMC’s University Center on Jan. 25, clearing the way to host its new high school program in seven University Center classrooms for the 2021-22 academic year. The program is an extension of Greenspire’s existing middle school program at the Grand Traverse Commons. it will initially serve students in grades 9 and 10, and will add grade 11 in year two and grade 12 in year three.

Greenspire is a free public charter school sponsored by Grand Valley State University. Greenspire found the UC’s Boardman Lake location near the expanding TART trail to be a good fit for their environmentally-focused school while they grow their new program and decide whether to build their own facility in the future.

Thank you to our tech services heroes for getting NMC back online

Hawk Owl Helper logoThank you to the NMC staff who worked through the weekend to bring NMC’s systems and websites back online after what Systems & LAN Management Director Dan Wasson called “the worst outage at NMC that I’ve ever had to deal with.” Technical issues following bad information from a tech support provider knocked multiple systems offline Friday afternoon, including the NMC, WNMC and Dennos Museum Center websites, employee and student intranet sites, Banner, Moodle and the phone system.

Database Administrator Neil Streeter and Network Analysts Paul Martin and Bryce Turner worked through the night Friday and on Saturday to bring most systems back online by Saturday afternoon, Wasson said. Administrative Systems Director Dan Gentry and his team, and Educational Media Technologies Director Terri Gustafson and her team, then had to test the systems to make sure everything worked properly. “We were very fortunate that we had no data loss and no corruption,” Wasson said. Throughout the process, Technology Support Services Coordinator Ali Thornton, who called the outages “unprecedented,” kept the campus informed as individual systems returned to service.
