The Health & Science Building atrium on NMC’s main campus will be used as a city polling place for Precinct 9 voters again this year, including on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Some parking in the Cedar lot will be set aside for voters at those times.
The NMC Bookstore will be closed Nov. 6 and will reopen with normal hours Wednesday, Nov. 7.

TRAVERSE CITY — The public is invited to visit the newly refreshed Shirley S. Okerstrom Fine Arts Building with an evening featuring art, live music and dance presented by students and faculty.
Side-by-Side, Students and Faculty Creating Together, will be held from 4–7 p.m., Friday, November 9, in the Fine Arts Building at NMC. Light refreshments will be provided.
The Fine Arts Building was the last building in the United States designed by famed Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius in 1969. NMC invested in refurbishing the building’s unique cedar exterior and windows earlier this year.

The community is invited to attend the 43rd annual Mariners Memorial Service at noon Friday, November 9 in NMC’s Great Lakes Campus courtyard.
The memorial service is held to remember and honor mariners who have perished on the Great Lakes and oceans and is sponsored by the Student Propeller Club, Port 150, of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. The Great Lakes Campus is located at 715 E. Front Street, at Barlow Avenue (next to the Holiday Inn) in Traverse City. Guests are invited to enter through the glass exhibition hall and proceed into the outdoor courtyard on the north side (harbor side) of the Academy.
Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, call the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at (231) 995-1200.

The Freshwater Roundtable is proud to announce the 11th Annual Freshwater Summit to be held on Friday, October 26, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hagerty Conference Center at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus. The Freshwater Summit is a conference of environmental professionals and engaged citizens focusing on current issues facing the Great Lakes region.
Presentations include understanding drivers of change in Great Lakes water levels, planning to be a resilient Great Lakes community, and measuring the economic impacts of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
Cost is $35/person or $15/student and includes lunch. Registration is available online here.
The Freshwater Summit is a product of the Freshwater Roundtable and is organized by The Watershed Center, Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, Michigan Sea Grant Extension, Great Lakes Environmental Center, Inland Seas Education Association, NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management and the Grand Traverse Conservation District.

Mike Oberlin, a longtime Social Science instructor, passed away at 66 years old from health-related issues recently while traveling in Ecuador. He was a wonderful, caring person who taught psychology for NMC for the last 21 years. In addition to his dedication to his students, he had a great passion for traveling with his wife Merri to foreign lands. He will be greatly missed.

The Bay Area Transportation Authority has received approval from the Michigan Department of Transportation to install a shelter at BATA’s Bayline stop at East Front Street and Milliken Drive. This will help keep students and visitors protected from the elements year round.
The shelter should be installed in the next two weeks.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Great Lakes Great Chefs dinner benefiting NMC’s Great Lakes Culinary Institute.
The November 9 evening begins at 6 p.m. with sparkling wine and a raw bar on the Great Lakes Campus catwalk, then moves to Lobdell’s: A Teaching Restaurant for five amazing courses and a spectacular view. Guest chefs working in collaboration with GLCI students include GLCI alumna Brooke Mallory (3030 Ocean), Adam McMarlin (Nine Bean Rows), and Jeff Brandon (Superior Foods).
Tickets are $100 per person can be purchased online here or by calling (231) 995-1021.
Proceeds from this event will be used to bring talented chefs and others from the culinary world to the Great Lakes Culinary Institute to teach and work side by side with students.
