How to catch TEDx Traverse City!

On Wednesday, May 14 NMC will host the fourth TEDx Traverse City event. This year’s theme is Game Changers: Designing Tomorrow.

The main event location will again be the Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum. That event location is sold out. However, there is another Main Campus venue specifically for NMC students and employees located in Scholars Hall, Rm 217 (the theater). Seats will be available in this location on a first come, first served basis. Come for a session or stay for the day – the choice is yours! (more…)

NMC Jazz Ensembles Festival May 17 & 18

On the weekend of May 17-18, Northwestern Michigan College will host the first NMC Jazz Festival at Milliken Auditorium. The event will bring together the college’s three jazz ensembles along with professional performers and area high school jazz bands. It will run in conjunction with the annual NMC BBQ, the college’s highest-profile event, which annually brings thousands of people to campus. (more…)

Let’s all do the BBQ- Sunday, May 18

BBQ-logo-redNorthwestern Michigan College will host the 59th annual Barbecue, one of the Grand Traverse region’s most popular spring traditions, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 18 on main campus.

The late Gerald W. Oleson and his wife Frances, founders of Oleson’s Food Stores in Traverse City, started the annual fundraiser picnic in 1956. Under the leadership of the third generation of the Oleson family, Oleson’s Food Stores continues to donate the food. About 9,000 people attend every year, raising $1.5 million for college programs and equipment over the years. (more…)

Spring 2014 Dean’s List released

Congratulations to those who made the Dean’s Lists for the spring 2014 semester at Northwestern Michigan College! The lists below are organized by the student’s home county.

Published at the end of each term, the Dean’s List recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of full-time and part-time students. These students have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or above out of a possible 4.0 while taking twelve or more credits (full-time) or between six and eleven credits (part-time).

NMC Alumni Quilt Raffle tickets on sale now

Vines & Branches-Bargello QuiltThe NMC Alumni Quilt raffle is back! This year, the grand prize is a gorgeous queen-sized Bargello quilt, handcrafted by Bonnie King and quilted by Marty Beer called “Vines & Branches.”  Tickets for the raffle are three for $5 or $2 each. The winners will be drawn at 4.30 p.m. at the NMC BBQ on Sunday, May 18.

The quilt is on display in the Admissions office now and you can buy your tickets in Admissions or Founder’s Hall.

Other great prizes in the raffle include lunch at Lobdell’s, Dennos memberships, NMC swag and more! Proceeds benefit NMC students through the George C. Comden Alumni Scholarship Fund. (more…)

General education day

On Thursday, May 8, 65 faculty and staff gathered to support the General Education assessment process.  Faculty and staff scored over 600 Communications and Critical Thinking artifacts from 120 different classes.  Thank you to all who participated in scoring and in providing the first scores and artifacts for this sample of near-graduate students.  Thanks also to Mitchell VanderKam and Karen Ruedinger for helping to plan the day and for providing the data entry from 1200 rubrics. Thursday, over 230 young Hemingways/Atwoods along with many teachers and adults will descend on campus to attend the Young Writers Conference hosted by EES.  Keynotes Jeffrery Schatzer and Lynne Rae Perkins provide inspiration along with an impressive group of area writers leading workshops. Front Street Writers get in on the action guiding the sharing of original work by the kids.

The learning adventure takes place in the Milliken Auditorium and Scholars Hall.  Let’s make them remember that captivating welcome when they return for College for Kids and later to the admissions office.

NMC Fitness Center news

5kCongratulations to NMC staff member Karen Ruedinger who completed her first 5K event on April 26 at the National Trout Festival in Kalkaska.  Karen had long desired to participate in a running events and the NMC Fitness Center staff assisted Karen with resistance exercises, cardiovascular training, and dietary/nutritional information. Karen was very diligent in her training pursuit and so can you.   Way to go Karen!

Small Works Art Sale at the Dennos Museum Center

Glenn WolffThe Dennos Museum Center is offering art patron’s an opportunity to purchase original art work by Northern Michigan’s creative artists, in the museum’s 6th annual Small Works art sale from May 15-18, 2014.

All art work is no larger than 5” X 7” and affordable with prices ranging from $5-$50. Artists will bring in work in all 2D media, paintings, prints and photography plus 3D work in media of fiber, wood, ceramics and sculptures. Last year’s sale represented 80 artists who brought in over 800 works of art. (more…)
