Experienced singers of college-age or older are invited to audition for Canticum Novum (kahn’-tee-koom noh’-voom), a new choral ensemble being offered at Northwestern Michigan College. Canticum Novum has several performance cycles throughout the year, with an emphasis on performances in December and late Spring. Because of the challenging literature and the abbreviated rehearsal schedule, only singers with good reading skills should inquire.

A budding Traverse City tradition will continue this September 13th as the rival high school football teams of Traverse City Central and Traverse City West engage in a game to honor Northern Michigan veterans and to give special recognition to those who have lost their lives in recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Attendees are asked to purchase shirts to wear to the game in support of their team. Supporters of Central are asked to purchase blue shirts and supporters of West are asked to purchase red shirts to show the friendly rivalry which supports a good cause. The shirts will be available for purchase around Traverse City, including in the office of Military & Veteran Outreach Services on NMC’s campus. Shirts are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Come join the award-winning NMC Children’s Choir for its 23rd season. Students entering Kindergarten through grade 9 this fall who love to sing and want to improve their abilities are invited to participate in NMC’s award-winning Children’s Choir. Brief auditions for students entering grades 3 to 9 will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 10 & 12 in the Fine Arts Building at NMC. Students will be asked to sing the first verse of “America the Beautiful”. Music and accompaniment is provided.

Northwestern Michigan College and the Family Educational Rights And Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 as Amended
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, helps protect the privacy of student records. The Act provides for the right to inspect and review educational records, the right to seek to amend those records and to limit disclosure of information from the records. The Act applies to all institutions that are the recipients of federal funding.
NMC Great Lakes Water Studies student Chris Horvath is in Iceland this summer on a Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) internship aboard Columbia University’s research vessel the R/V Langseth, doing research on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

NMC’s Makers Bay is a space dedicated to the growing community of makers and do-it-yourself (DIY) projects including robotics.
The learning lab provides you with the equipment, tools, components, and technical assistance to create your DIY project. Join the community of new and experienced makers and learn, play, create, and share.

1) All new registration for fall 2013 will end at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013, for any session that begins on August 24th. (NMC staff will be available in their offices until 5:00 p.m. for registration assistance.) Students who have not registered for any classes by that date will not be registered for classes starting in the normal 15 week session.
2) Students who register by the deadline will be able to add/switch classes during the first few days of classes provided the class has not met and there are seats still open in the class. Students adding classes in this fashion will not need approval from the academic areas and can register through visiting the Records and Registration Office. Online classes are considered to have started the first day of the session.(Please see the attached sheet for specific academic area guidelines.)
3) Students seeking to start at NMC after the August 23, 2013 deadline will have the opportunity to seek registration and enrollment in a limited number of late-start classes. (For students seeking full time enrollment, you may consider late start sections of: ENG 111, PSY 101, MTH 23, HST 111, MUS 110 and/or PHL 202 as well as other late start courses.) These courses will not be initially opened up in the course schedule until late in the registration period and/or when the other sections in these courses are closed.

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present a range of public programs in conjunction with the National Geographic exhibition, Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution. All programs are free with museum admission ($10 adults, $5 children, museum members, & NMC students).
The programs are a partnership between the Museum and local bird organizations in support of Birds of Paradise. Saving Birds Thru Habitat, located in Leelanau County, will offer a series of “Sundays are for the Birds” programs for families and adults at the Dennos Museum Center. Wings of Wonder, located in Empire, will present “A Bird’s-Eye View: An Interactive Raptor Experience” featuring live birds on July 15, August 15, and August 30, also at the Dennos.
“These programs represent the kind of partnership the Dennos Museum Center wants to make happen,” says Jason Dake, Curator of Education. “This is why the museum exists – to present engaging and educational programming for the community.”

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College invites new docent volunteers interested in working with K-12, college, and adult tour groups. Docents help fulfill the mission of the Dennos Museum Center by contacting teachers to discuss learning goals, preparing and presenting tours in a team, teaching art projects to students, and evaluating the success of various educational activities. In addition, being a docent connects you with a large and welcoming family of like-minded learners that provide support and encouragement.
Docent training occurs on Tuesday mornings and includes presentations about the collections, discussions about art and science topics related to special exhibitions, and hands-on workshops involving interactive tour techniques. New docents are expected to complete training between September and December 2013, and begin shadowing on tours in January.
A successful docent is someone with a flexible schedule who enjoys learning and teaching, particularly in the areas of arts and science. A strong knowledge of art is not required, but a willingness to learn is a must.

The Muster Project is an innovative and fun approach to helping new NMC students. Through The Muster Project, new students go sailing, get connected with a mentor, and participate in social activities throughout the school year. As a result, students have more fun, get connected, and typically do better academically.
Current students can apply to be a mentor (CLICK HERE FOR THE LINK), then call to set up an interview with Joe Sanok (995-1118). Mentors connect with new students, go sailing, plan fun activities, and help grow the program.
Kudos to John Biolchini and GLMA Cadets Richard Gray and Daniel Cairns for safely conducting tours of the T/S State of Michigan for 50 + Cherry Festival little prince/ princesses, and their escorts, on Friday 05 July. Assisting all these kids, answering questions, and most importantly seeing it done in a safe manner was no small achievement. Most importantly a great time was had by the little prince/ princesses and their escorts.

Nikoline Sanderson, a student from Northwestern Michigan College, is helping a WWII veteran’s daughter finally get answers to her life long questions about her father.
Donna Gerhard approached the NMC history department hoping that they could help her find more information about her father, Sgt. Donald Fox, a soldier that fought in WWII. Sanderson was assigned to the project by Jim Press, NMC history teacher, and has done countless hours of research to help Gerhard find the information she needs about her father’s life during the military, and after.
Scott Herzberg, Assistant Director for NMC’s Outreach Services and POC Military and Veterans Services has raised $1,000 for Gerhard and himself to make a trip to a reunion with her father’s military troop. They need about $1,500 more. Gerhard is wheelchair bound and is living with multiple sclerosis. They are seeking donations for the August trip.
