Global Literature Reading Group book- Copies still available!

orphan+master-180x180If you haven’t yet, you need to pick up the new Global Literature Reading Group book, The Orphan Master’s Son, by Adam Johnson. It provides a glimpse into the bizarre world of modern day North Korea.  Huffington Post calls it “an incredibly vivid page-turner of a novel…Romance, coming-of-age tale, adventure and thriller all in one, this book is singular and not to be missed.”

Holka, TracieTracie Holka joined NMC on February 18, 2014 as an Accounting Assistant. She can be reached at (231) 995-2118 or twooden@nmc.edu.

Tracie has lived in Northern Michigan her entire life.  She attended NMC, earning an Associates in Business Management and an Associates in Accounting. Tracie was a general manger (GM) at her previous job for almost 16 years. She joined the NMC family last July in the Student Financial Services Office before transitioning to her current position as Accounting Assistant.  Tracie has two children Ellie, 9 and Max, 5.  They love hitting the pool, biking, going to the movies and bowling.

Career Kickstart will help community members with their employment search

I am a student at Northwestern Michigan College taking a professional communications course with instructor Kristy McDonald. Our class is working to help community members with their employment search. We have created an event called Career Kickstart. This event will consist of career coaching, mock interviews, resume building and free professional clothing.

Amy grew up in Grand Rapids, MI and attended Aquinas College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics and Art History. She taught ceramics classes through East Lansing Parks and Recreation for two years prior to completing her M. Ed. from Grand Valley State University.  Before coming to NMC Amy worked as an Academic Advisor for the College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  Amy’s hobbies include pottery, painting, reading and hiking. Spring Break Stitching workshop at the Dennos Museum Center

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present Spring Break Stitching: Explore Contemporary Quilts, a workshop for youth, grades 3-8. On Monday, March 31, 10:00am – 3:00pm, children in grades 3-5 will be able to learn about the history of quilting while trying their hand at contemporary techniques. On the following day, Tuesday, April 1, 10:00am – 3:00pm, children in grades 6-8 will do the same. Intercom contributions

Leadership. A critical part of any workplace, it’s easily noticed when absent, but much harder to deliver.
Recognizing the importance of doing so, however, a group of NMC faculty and staff spent the last six months focusing on the foundations of leadership at the college. As the annual employee and professional development review process begins, you’re invited to consider joining them.
Through monthly skill-building sessions, individual goal-setting, application to daily work, and colleague support, the participants gained competencies that will increase their effectiveness as supervisors, managers, and directors or as project leads, shared governance and committee leaders.
