Northwestern Michigan College has been ranked 10th out of the top 15 Best Drone Training Colleges by SuccessfulStudent.org.
NMC can offer specialized Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) training, aimed at giving students skills to operate a small (under 55 lbs) UAV for many different types of commercial applications. A basic level of aviation knowledge is strongly encouraged. That level of knowledge can be gained by taking a Private Pilot Ground School course either through NMC or another provider. Additionally, NMC offers an Engineering Technology program specializing in unmanned aerial systems that includes training on electrics, hydraulics, programming basics, and robotics — skills that will help a UAS operator to be more successful in the field.
NMC is one of the premier colleges in the country for UAS operator training. More commonly called drones, unmanned aircraft represent a sector of aviation that will undergo exponential growth over the coming years. Although many of the jobs available today are with defense contractors, the civilian job market will dwarf the military sector once the FAA opens up US airspace to commercial UAS operations. The potential commercial uses of unmanned systems are enormous, to include remote sensing of the atmosphere, disaster response, weather forecasting, scientific research; agricultural survey of crops, soils, and livestock; crop dusting, wildfire surveillance, wildlife surveys, power line and pipeline survey, industrial security; oil, gas, and mineral exploration; payload transport, search and rescue, and aerial photography for fields like real estate, construction, film and entertainment industry, and accident investigation.

TRAVERSE CITY — During its regular monthly meeting, the Board of Trustees for Northwestern Michigan College unanimously approved a balanced budget and set tuition rates for the fall 2015 and spring/summer 2016 semesters.
General Tuition rates for residents will increase by $5.45 per contact hour, setting the in-district rate at $96.35 per contact hour. A Grand Traverse County student attending full time on average will see a general tuition increase of $130.80 for the academic year.
NMC’s in-district tuition is the 6th lowest of the state’s community colleges and is 75 percent lower than the average public universities in Michigan.
Community college revenue comes from three main sources: tuition and fees, local property taxes and state appropriations. “Historically those funding sources have shared the burden equally. But during the past thirteen years, the share paid by property taxes and state funding has decreased. Students, who once paid a third of the cost, are now paying more than half. We at NMC have worked hard to navigate this shift and have had the lowest average percentage increase in tuition of any community college in Michigan for a decade,” said Timothy J. Nelson, president, Northwestern Michigan College.
For 2015-16 NMC’s revenue will be 20 percent from state aid, 22 percent from local property tax, 55 percent from tuition and fees and three percent from other sources.

Saturday, July 11 NMC will be marching down the parade route in the National Cherry Festival’s Cherry Royale Parade. The presentation will be led by President Nelson, followed by Chip the faux buffalo from the NMC Barbecue and then our float with folks handing out Hawk Owl temporary tattoos to the parade goers! And of course, the NMC entry would not be complete without the ever-popular brat truck which is staffed by the wonderful folks at the Hagerty Center who will hand out brats all the way down the parade route.
Would you like to volunteer to help hand out brats or Hawk Owl tattoos? Call Anne Varga at 995-1020 or email her at avarga@nmc.edu if you would like to be a part of a great day! All volunteers will receive a Hawk Owl t-shirt to wear in the parade and keep as a souvenir! (more…)
