TRAVERSE CITY — More than 250 high school choir students will participate in the third annual Choral Invitational Wednesday, October 29, on NMC’s main campus.
Nine choirs from Benzie Central, Elk Rapids, Kingsley, Leland, Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s,Glen Lake, St. Francis, Gaylord and Grayling high schools will spend the day on campus, learning and rehearsing music together, touring the campus, and attending performances of NMC faculty, music majors, and audio tech students.
The invitational culminates in an “Informance” at 6 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium. The public is invited to attend to the informal performance, or come listen to rehearsals during the day.

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the Detroit based Jazz vocalist Joan Belgrave in Joan Belgrave sings Dinah Washington: featuring the Lisa McCall Dancers on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 8:00 PM in Milliken Auditorium. Calling herself the “Queen of the Blues” and considered “the most popular black female recording artist of the ’50s,” Dinah Washington, was born Ruth Lee Jones (1924 – 1963). She was recognized mainly as a jazz vocalist, though she performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles including blues, R&B, and traditional pop music. Ain’t Misbehavin, Unforgettable, What a Diff’rence a Day Makes, Teach Me Tonight, and Please Send Me Someone to Love were among her many hit songs. (more…)

For several years, NMC has supported the Northwest Food Coalition by donating non-perishable food items at the holiday party. This year, the holiday party committee asks NMC faculty and staff to simultaneously support both the Coalition and student learning by filling the pantries through the Food for Thought food drive organized by Kristy McDonald’s Professional Communications class.
Any donations that usually go to the holiday party drive should be donated to the Food for Thought Food Drive, running through Nov. 16. Your department or office also has the opportunity to win prizes. (more…)

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College’s Concert Band, under the direction of Patricia J. Brumbaugh, will perform its first concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 25 in Milliken Auditorium.
The program includes a wide range of selections, from fun marches, to beautiful melodies to toe-tapping folk songs. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for seniors (ages 62 and older) and children (ages 12 and younger). Admission for NMC students with student ID is free. Call the Milliken Auditorium Box Office at (231-995-1553) for further information.
The NMC Concert Band was formed in 1973 and now totals more than 50 members. It is comprised of young, energetic high school and college students learning side-by-side with experienced adults. The band is a member of the Association of Concert Bands. Rehearsals are weekly throughout the academic year, with performances held primarily at Milliken Auditorium.

TRAVERSE CITY — NMC’s Professional Communications class is holding its third annual Food For Thought food drive through November 16 to support local food pantries in the five-county area.
Food For Thought partners with the Northwest Food Coalition to combat food insecurity by helping to fill more than 50 local food pantries. In 2013, the Northwest Food Coalition fed more than 450,000 people. By organizing the food drive as a semester-long service learning project, NMC students also practice professional communications skills.
To donate, community members may drop off non-perishable food and personal hygiene items at:
- Traverse City Walmart: Oct. 26, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
- Tom’s Food Market, East Bay, Acme, Interlochen, and Fourteenth Street locations: Nov. 1 and 2, 10 a.m.–5p.m.
- UAV/Robotics/Automotive Exploration Day at Aero Park Lab building: Nov. 8, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Levi Main’s goal with 10 minutes remaining lifted the NMC Soccer Club to a 3-2 win over Lake Superior State University Soccer Club in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Justin Jensen recorded the winning assist. Miguel Alvarado and Garrett Koss scored the Hawk Owls other goals, assists credited to Ed Smith and Jack Dulude.
The NMC Soccer Club travels to Grand Rapids this Saturday to play Cornerstone University Reserve team at 2 p.m. The club is for both recreational drop-in soccer twice a week and competitive soccer weekend match. Learn more about the Soccer Club here!

Come take part in one of a variety of events taking place this week in conjunction with the third-annual Anti-Bullying Conference taking place this Friday, Oct. 17 at the Hagerty Center. The conference is presented by the northwest Michigan regional Anti-Bullying Task Force, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and NMC.
