Attend the Tibetan Buddhist monks concert on Saturday for FREE!
NMC students! You can attend the concert of sacred music and dance by the Tibetan Buddhist monks in the Milliken Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Saturday April 19 for FREE! The Mandala Sand Painting, which is being constructed by the monks throughout the week, will be swept up after the concert and the sand distributed to concert attendees.
Your guest can come at half price when attending with a student ID holder. You can order by calling the box office 995-1553 or in person 3-5 p.m. this week or the night of the concert. You must have your student ID to pick up the tickets.
The museum is free to NMC students all week to see the sand painting in progress and it is open this Friday from 10-5 p.m. although the college is closed. (more…)

Kundun (1996, 134min) – Monday, April 14, 2014 – 7:45pm, Milliken Auditorium – FREE admission
Monks from the Mystical Arts of Tibet will introduce a special screening of the Academy Award-nominated film, Kundun, at the Milliken Auditorium on Monday, April 14, at 7:45 PM, with a live performance of the multi-phonic chanting featured in this fascinating film about the dramatic life of a young boy, discovered in one of the world’s remotest places, and destined to become the world-renowned Dalai Lama.
Directed by Martin Scorcese and written by Melissa Matheson, Kundun tells the true story of a young boy found living with a family of Tibetan farmers in a small hamlet, near that country’s border with China — and what happens when the two year-old child displays a remarkable ability to correctly identify the personal possessions of the recently deceased 13th Dalai Lama. What follows is the amazing story of the 14th Dalai Lama, from his escape from Tibet to his years of exile as a spiritual leader and advocate for peace. Kundun is scored by Philip Glass’s unique electronic compositions, and was nominated for four academy awards.
The monks are at the Dennos Museum Center, April 14 -19, where they will create an intricate sand painting similar to the one in the film. (more…)

Passport Student Lecture Series continues on April 16 with focus on Ecuador
NMC Outreach Services’ Passport Student Lecture Series continues in April with international student Diego Jacho who will speak to attendees about Ecuador.
The lecture will take place on Wednesday, April 16 from 12:15 – 1:00 pm in Founders Hall, room 110. Guests are invited to bring lunch and/or coffee to enjoy while they listen. (more…)
CIE’s Friday Forum for April focuses on lab vs. lecture classes
Friday Forums will occur one Friday each month through April. These forums are brought to you by the Center for Instructional Excellence which supports student learning by encouraging faculty-driven initiatives, promoting development of faculty knowledge, and recognizing the achievement of excellence. This final Friday Forum will take place on Friday, April 11 from noon-1:30pm, and looks to answer the question: What is the difference in teaching a ‘Lab’ class vs. a ‘Lecture’ class? (more…)
Reminder: Town Hall meeting will take place April 8
Join NMC President Tim Nelson Tuesday, April 8 at 4 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium for an NMC Town Hall meeting. President Nelson will give a short update about things going on at the college and take your questions.

“Intern with the Government” event will take place on April 9
NMC is hosting a free event, “Intern with the Government,” on Wednesday, April 9. This information session is designed to increase awareness and knowledge about government internships/careers and build the next generation of government employees by covering topics that include the Federal Pathways program, application information and career opportunities. Amanda Gower joined NMC on March 17, 2014 as the Resource Development Assistant, a position she previously held as a supplemental employee. She can be reached at (231) 995-1021 or agower@nmc.edu.
Amanda grew up in Williamston, MI, and attended Central Michigan University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Statistics. Amanda spent the last seven years in Indianapolis where she attended graduate school at Purdue University for I/O Psychology and worked for the Boy Scouts of America. In her free time she enjoys playing volleyball, reading, and traveling. She is also an avid hiker who has summited the highest point of 34 states. Amanda currently lives in Suttons Bay with her husband, John.

In its fourth year, TEDx Traverse City will host Game Changers: Designing Tomorrow on Wednesday, May 14. NMC staff member is “locked up” to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association
HELP! It is now time for me to learn who my TRUE friends are. On April 16, I am being “Locked Up” and I need your help to raise my bail. I know some of you would rather pay to keep me in jail, but either way it helps adults and children affected by muscular dystrophy in our area by providing clinic visits, support groups, summer camp for youth, flu shots, equipment repair assistance and research. NMC Alumni Art Show features more than 30 former students
Many prominent alumni of the art department of Northwestern Michigan College will have their works displayed this spring at a one of a kind exhibition, hosted at The Traverse City Art and Design Studio from March 29 through May 31.
“Three Decades of Art of NMC” has been made possible by the efforts of NMC Professor Emeritus Paul Welch. Seeking to find an outlet for all of the great art, and great artists, produced by the college, Welch, who served as the chair of the NMC Art Department for more than 30 years, came up with the idea of an alumni art show. The support of community partners has helped bring that idea to life.

Hollie DeWalt joined NMC on March 24, 2014 as the Total Rewards Coordinator in the Human Resources department. She can be reached at (231) 995-1350 or hdewalt@nmc.edu.
Hollie is originally from Pennsylvania, but has lived in Traverse City for about 10 years. She holds a Masters in Human Resource Management from Central Michigan University. Hollie was previously employed by Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging as the Deputy Director, and also worked for Conflict Resolution Services, an organization providing an array of mediation services. She just celebrated 23 years of marriage to her husband Pat, and they have two teenage sons. Hollie enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, boating, camping, and traveling. She is also a board member for the Women’s Resources Center, where she volunteers some of her time and expertise. (more…)
