Ninth annual Career Fair at the Hagerty Center on March 5

Students and the public are invited to NMC’s ninth annual Career Fair, set for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 5 at the Hagerty Center on NMC’s Great Lakes Campus.

Employers from professional and occupational fields will be recruiting for career-track positions, seasonal and entry-level opportunities, as well as internships, service learning and networking opportunities. (more…)

February Wellness Sleep Challenge reminder

Adequate sleep is another step you can take to combat serious health issues. Commit to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night during the month of February (and beyond). Keep track of the number of days you were able to reach your sleep goal (7 to 8 hours/night) and submit the total to Marcia Talicska at mtalicska@nmc.edu by 3/5/15. Remembering Allen Scheck

AllenScheck1953YrBkAllen George Scheck, 83, of Traverse City, passed away on Jan. 20, 2015. Allen attended and graduated from Northwestern Michigan College in 1953 with an associate’s degree and was a member of the first graduating class. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree and earned a master’s degree in education in 1964 from Western Michigan University. His obituary can be read here. Union ballots to be mailed to faculty Feb. 19

TRAVERSE CITY — Eligible Northwestern Michigan College faculty will begin voting later this month on whether to unionize with the Michigan Education Association (MEA).

The Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC) will begin mailing ballots to eligible faculty members (86 full-time, three part-time) at their home addresses Feb. 19. To be counted, signed ballots must be received by MERC by March 11. The majority of those who actually cast a vote will determine the outcome.

Late last year the MEA filed a petition with MERC seeking to hold an election after being approached by NMC faculty seeking to form a collective bargaining unit.

Thermography Training at NMC in March

Thermal imaging is rapidly becoming the standard tool for troubleshooting, maintenance, and diagnostics in many industries. NMC will hold a Thermography Level I Training on March 5 & 6 in Aero Park Labs rm. 102. The 2-day training is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes lunch both days. You’ll learn to use thermal imaging equipment, gather data, and interpret images. The cost is $1,595.  (more…)

24-hour donor challenge to support NMC set for February 13

The 24-hour donor challenge is a participation challenge that seeks to to inspire gifts from 100 alumni, friends and family who believe in the power of learning at NMC. President Timothy J. Nelson has personally offered the incentive of a matching gift of $24 for each of the first 100 gifts, up to $2,400 total. (more…)
