Sweet Earth is an all inclusive Earth Day celebration for our dynamic Northern Michigan community. It is a means of communicating how to get involved with a multitude of environmental issues, both locally and globally, through a dialogue with music, art and interactive workshops.
Sweet Earth is a celebration filled with creative expression that plants the seed of environmental consciousness and provides the resources to help it grow. This free festival takes place on Saturday, April 18 from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in NMC’s Health and Science Building. (more…)

Betsy is a proud 2005 NMC graduate, and all three of her siblings also attended NMC. Betsy has been a northern Michigan resident since early childhood; some of her favorite memories are of riding her bike to Torch Lake to go swimming in the summertime. She holds a BSW from Ferris State University. Betsy is a former Michigan Press Association Award winning news editor, photographer and reporter for UpNorth Publications and Morningstar Publications. Betsy and her partner Brendan O’Donnel, a tall ship captain, are beginner beekeepers. Betsy enjoys long distance hiking, growing her own food and canoeing on the Manistee River.

NMC International Services and Service Learning presents their Passport Student Lecture Series for April with international student Abdalla Elhadad who will speak to attendees about Egypt. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 16 from 12:15 – 1:00 pm in Founders Hall, room 110. Guests are invited to bring lunch and/or coffee to enjoy while they listen.
The Passport Student Lecture Series is a chance to explore other cultures through the experiences of NMC international students who will give presentations about their home countries. During the month of April, the Student Life office, along with Residence Life, will be holding a Sexual Assault Awareness Week (S.A.A.W.). There will be events throughout the week focused on raising awareness around sexual misconduct, specifically on college campuses. This is the first year that NMC will be holding a week of events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This week will offer unique opportunities for students, faculty and staff.

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College and Tappan Zee Records are pleased to announce the USA release of the new CD Bob James Live at the Milliken Auditorium as recorded in concert with the Grammy Award winning Jazz pianist Bob James and the Bob James Quartet on May 3, 2014.

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present Nagata Shachu a taiko (Japanese drum) ensemble, on Friday April 17, 2015 at 8:00 in the Milliken Auditorium of the Dennos Museum Center. Tickets for the concert are $27 in advance ($24 for museum members) and $30 at the door. TRAVERSE CITY — The Board of Trustees of Northwestern Michigan College invites registered voters of Grand Traverse County who are otherwise legally qualified to apply to fill the vacancy on the Board created by Cheryl Gore Follette’s resignation on March 23.
Michigan law requires the Board to appoint, within 30 days, a replacement trustee for a term until the next regular community college election. The appointment will expire on December 31, 2016. The next regular election is in November 2016.
Commitments include but are not limited to the following:
- Regular board meeting, typically the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
- Board study sessions and committee meetings scheduled as required
- Annual overnight Board retreat
- Participation in other college functions including commencement, receptions, ceremonies, events
- Travel periodically for purposes of professional development and representing the college at various association meetings, with travel for trustee paid by NMC
- This is a non-compensated position

A contingent of NMC students, faculty and staff who depart for Cuba Friday are the leading edge of a new distinction for the college: more study abroad students and destinations than any other Michigan community college.
The Cuba experience is among seven planned study abroad experiences this year. About 80 students from a dozen programs will travel to six different countries, including Cuba, South Africa (also during spring break), Brazil (two trips), Italy, Russia and Costa Rica. According to a survey by NMC’s International Services & Service Learning office, that’s more than any other community college in the state.
Jim Bensley directs that office and also teaches a World Cultures class. He chose Cuba as a destination before President Obama announced a plan to thaw relations with the Communist nation last December. With greater economic development imminent, experiences on the island isolated for half a century becomes even more valuable now.
“It’s rare U.S. residents ever get the chance to visit Cuba,” he said. “With Cuba so inextricably linked to the past, there is a genuine uniqueness that won’t always be as apparent as it is today.”
Looking forward to culture shock
Visual communications student Desiree Morgan is looking forward to that culture shock. She’s never traveled further than Canada, but had an interest in studying abroad. VisComm students are planning to film a documentary during the trip, which counts as academic credit.
Michael Meteer initially signed up by accident, selecting a course code that included the Cuba experience instead of one that did not. But the psychology student is happy with how things turned out.
“I’m most looking forward to the stories I’m going to come back with,” he said.
An increased emphasis on study abroad is part of the college’s strategic direction to ensure that NMC learners are prepared for success in a global society and economy. Next year, Bensley is planning eight student study abroad trips to several new destinations, including Guatemala, Ecuador, Greece and possibly Ethiopia.

Two changes have been made to the Innovation Grant process.
- For this round only, the deadline has been moved to Friday, April 10, to avoid spring break.
- For this and all future grant cycles, applications must be submitted by your area Vice President. The stated deadline (for this round, April 10) will be the deadline to submit your application to your VP.
It is strongly recommended that you discuss your proposal idea with your Vice President before developing the full proposal. VPs do have the authority to “reject” an application but can also provide valuable feedback to help develop great proposals that are more likely to be successful! (more…)
