Campus Expression Policy

At their regular April meeting, the Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees approved a second reading of a new college “Campus Expression Policy.”

NMC has always been committed to the free and lawful exercise of expressive activity, and that commitment is unchanged by this policy.

The policy is intended to allow for the expression of free speech in a civil manner and forbids NMC from limiting public expression of ideas based on the content or source of the ideas being expressed.  This policy does not prevent public demonstration, protest, petition or similar activity.

The policy’s intent is to identify spaces for expressive activity, based upon the need to maintain an orderly and peaceful environment to ensure the mission and operation of the college.   The policy was developed by NMC with input from counsel, campus safety and local law enforcement, and drafted to be consistent with that of similar policies in effect at other higher education institutions.

The restrictions in the policy are set to prevent a person or persons from assembling in a manner that prevents or obstructs the free movement of persons around the campus, free and normal use of college buildings and facilities or impedes the normal activities of the college.

The full policy can be found at: https://www.nmc.edu/about/policies/board-staff/D-505.15.html

Benefits corner

It’s likely you will not be able to depend solely on Social Security and your retirement plan with NMC to deliver all the money you’ll need for retirement.  It may be up to you to supplement your retirement income, and as an NMC employee, you have an excellent opportunity to set aside money for your retirement by contributing to a 403(b) or 457(b) retirement plan.

Contributions are made with pre-tax income if you use one of the companies NMC partners with to offer payroll deduction.  As a result, these contributions are excluded from your current federal taxable income, which means you’ll pay less in income tax.  You also do not pay taxes on earnings from the investments in your retirement plan until you retire or withdraw them, which provides you the potential for faster growth.

If you are interested in learning more about starting a supplemental retirement plan through payroll pre-tax deduction, contact one of the following companies.  Once you set up an account, you simply complete a form so that we know what deduction to set up for you.  You have the flexibility to change your deduction amount whenever you feel it is needed and even to have retirement accounts with more than one of these companies.

Kudos

Heather Somero is always there to help, always positive, and always encouraging to me as a new adjunct. She is also very professional.

Michelle Autry is always putting out friendly and helpful emails to bring all of us along with her into the eLearning part of our jobs. Michelle was very professional and helpful to get all of my Moodle problems resolved. She was also very patient with me as I muddled my way through Moodle.

A HUGE thank you to Cheri Garvin who organized a tremendous Professional Development Day for Support Staff and Tech/Para! All three segments were outstanding and a good time was had by all!

Susan Odgers has been a tireless member of the Compensation Systems Review Work Group. Additionally, she is the founder of the monthly best practices adjunct meetings at Cambria Suites, bringing people together to work on the development of an adjunct website. This is on top of her teaching for several schools, other jobs and all of the community boards she sits on.

Kudos

Kudos to all involved in the Maritime Academy Open house last weekend. The event was well organized and well attended by people of all ages. A wonderful way to showcase our Maritime Academy!

Kudos to Human Resources, and specifically Carol Kasper, for presenting an overview of benefits to employees last week. This was a great refresher course! Thank you.

Kudos to all involved in the Retirement and Recognition dinner and specifically Cheri Paul. There is so much planning that goes on behind the scenes and we know that Cheri is the lead on much of the organization of this wonderful event each year. Thanks Cheri!

I have watched Zack Light greet new and returning folks at the Fitness Center in the most welcoming way, be they students, employees or community members. Zack is the face of the Fitness Center and everyone is better off because of it. He really knows his stuff, both professionally and personally. Zack always has a beautiful smile for everyone using the facility, and always makes time for me and folks I’ve brought to the Fitness Center. Carol Evans is also to be complimented for all of the great improvements at the Fitness Center! What a wonderful value for our area. Zach and his staff really care about all of us.

Kudos to John Pahl, Jerry Dobek, Troy Wilson (SGA treasurer and PBC student member), and the Faculty Endowment Fund for sponsoring David Milarch’s Earth Day visit to NMC on April 22, 2013. Milarch, the co-founder of the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive of Copemish, MI, donated 200 trees to be planted at NMC. Last year, NMC students also planted 200 trees from Milarch at NMC.

Kudos to Michelle Autry in Educational Media Technologies! Michelle is always there to help me & answer my questions about Moodle. She also made life easier for me & my students by helping me post videos to Moodle when we missed class due to a snow day. Thanks, Michelle.

Congratulations to all the staff and volunteers at WNMC for organizing a successful on-air fundraiser! The team did a great job keeping momentum up and engaging the community both on-air and online through Facebook, their website, etc. Well done!

Bruce Holland-Moritz recently joined the Fine Arts photo area as our Lab Technician. He has done a superb job of caring for the Photo Lab as well as assisting Sheila, me and the students as issues arise with the equipment and supplies. Bruce is very knowledgeable and talented as well as easy going; a combination that is perfect for managing the intense pace of the Photo Lab.

Benefits corner

When you have your first claim of the year for either medical or dental, do you ever wonder why you receive a letter asking if you and/or your dependents have other insurance coverage?  If so, then it’s probably because at open enrollment you did not complete the Coordination of Benefits Form.  This form is required if you have elected medical and/or dental coverage with NMC.  After you complete this form, it is sent to Meritain Health, who in turn sends it on to Priority Health if you elected medical and to ASR if you elected dental.

Coordination of benefits (COB) is the practice of ensuring that insurance claims are not paid multiple times, when an enrollee is covered by two health plans at the same time. The idea behind coordination of benefits is to ensure that the payments of both plans do not exceed 100% of the covered charges. The provision coordinates the health care benefits in the order in which the multiple health plans must pay benefits. Under a COB provision, insurance companies share the burden without overpaying. COB determines which plan is primary and which is secondary. The primary plan will pay the claims first and the unpaid balance will be paid by the secondary plan to the limit of its responsibility. Benefits are coordinated between the two health plans to ensure that policyholder receives full coverage. However over insurance or excess coverage is not permitted under COB.

If you didn’t complete the Coordination of Benefits form at the time you did your open enrollment, click on the link above to access the form so you can complete and submit it to Meritain Health.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact HR at 995-1362.

Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP)

Did you know that you can save money for higher education assistance for someone you care about by using payroll deduction?  The State of Michigan has made available the TIAA-CREF-managed Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP) to employers such as NMC.  Recent information on this program has been received to clarify how this program offers a benefit to you.  Unfortunately we have been calling this a pre-tax program, and apologize for this miscommunication.  The following information was sent to us to more clearly describe how MESP tax savings are realized:

“Although MI state tax payers are eligible for a MI state tax deduction for contributions made up to $5000 for single filers and $10,000 for joint filers, contributions made to the MESP even from a paycheck are still made on an after-tax basis.  Any tax savings comes when the MESP account owner goes to file their MI state taxes.

Payroll deduction to the MESP account is offered as a method of contribution, and is handled on an after-tax basis similar to direct deposit into an employee’s checking or savings account.  The Program also accepts funds via physical check or electronically from a checking or savings account.  Tax treatment of contributions is the same no matter how an account owner elects to contribute.

The employee would be responsible for indicating the amount of their contributions when filing their MI state taxes as well as reporting any redemptions taken from their account also when they file their taxes.

For further assistance please contact our service center representatives at 1-877-861-6377 and select option 3. Our service department’s hours are from 8am to 8pm ET, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.”

More details on the program can be found by visiting their website at www.misaves.com  If you decide to use the MESP as an educational savings program, contact HR at 231-995-1362 on starting your payroll deductions.
