Cuban music group Tiempo Libre to perform at the Dennos Museum Center

Traverse City: – The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the Cuban music group Tiempo Libre on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 8:00 PM in the Milliken Auditorium. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door, $22 for Museum Members, plus fees. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Museum Box office at 231-995-1553 or on line at www.dennosmuseum.org. NMC Student can attend for free with their student I.D. Tickets for NMC students are available at Student Life or the box office.

The three-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group Tiempo Libre is one the hottest young Latin bands today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, Tiempo Libre’s Miami-based members are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba. Classically trained at Cuba’s premiere conservatories, today, the group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of son.”  The Miami New Times calls Tiempo Libre’s timba a “tribal, joyful, genial vibe that demonically possesses the body from the waist down.”

Tiempo Libre’s appearance in Traverse City and in eight other venues around the state is made possible with a major grant from the National Endowment for the Arts applied for and received by the Dennos Museum Center to make the tour possible.

“I was completely blown away by this group when they performed at the Dennos in 2009 for schools in a project made possible by the Wharton Center at MSU,” says Gene Jenneman, Director of the Dennos Museum Center, “I wanted to find a way to bring them back to Traverse City and make them accessible to smaller venues like ours around the State. This grant allowed us to get the group to venues from Canton to Marquette, nine in all, and in doing so the Traverse City community will benefit and the Dennos will impact the state as a whole.” The grant will support part of the performing fees for both public and school programs in each community.

Tiempo Libre will offer a performance for schools on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at 9:30 and 11:30 AM in the Milliken Auditorium of the Dennos Museum Center. Teachers may call Jason Dake at 231-995-1029 or e-mail jdake@nmc.edu for information or to reserve tickets for the school performances.

With the purchase of a ticket to this performance, concert goers are invited to visit the museum’s galleries one hour before the concert and attend a post-concert reception with the performers.

The Dennos concert season is made possible with support from the Robert T and Ruth Haidt Trust, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Begonia Foundation with media support from WNMC 90.7, CMU Public Broadcasting and TV 29&8. Housing for our performers is provided by the Cambria Suites and Days Inn.

The Dennos Museum Center is open daily 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursdays until 8 PM, and Sundays 1-5 PM. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members. For more information on the Museum and its programs, go to www.dennosmuseum.org or call 231-995-1055. The Dennos Museum Center is located at 1401 College Dr., Traverse City, MI 49686, at the entrance to the campus of Northwestern Michigan College.

The Office of Research, Planning & Effectiveness thanks everyone for their participation in the Employee Engagement Survey

Thank you for your participation!
The Employee Engagement Survey closed on Sunday evening, April 7 with 405 total completes. This is up slightly from last year (399). However, because we included adjunct faculty from the three prior semesters, we had a larger population to survey this year.  Even with more completed surveys, our overall response rate was lower at 57% (65.5% in 2012). Thank you to everyone who completed the survey and again congratulations to our three Best Buy gift card winners – Dave Wilson, Mike Gillett and Ann Geht.
The Office of Research, Planning & Effectiveness will be analyzing the results and preparing an summary report for the campus that is targeted for release in mid-May.

Employee anniversaries

The following employee is celebrating an anniversary soon. Please join us in congratulating her!

Elizabeth Stevens                    Admissions Specialist                                                 18 years

Kudos

The most important thing that Amanda Woodruff of Records & Registration does is being someone that students can relate to. She has been this way as long as she has worked here. She understands their questions, frustrations and is always willing to go the extra mile for them. She remains calm under pressure. She questions transactions before just doing something that might end up being incorrect. She is willing to take on additional duties as assigned. Amanda is a great asset to NMC as she serves our
customers with the highest respect.

NMC signs reverse transfer agreements with eight Michigan universities

At a ceremony in the University Center yesterday, NMC signed “reverse transfer” agreements with seven of our current University Center partners: Central Michigan University, Davenport University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Spring Arbor University and Western Michigan University; and also with Northern Michigan University.

The agreements will formalize the process of “reverse” transferring any credits from the four-year university to NMC that complete requirements for an NMC degree or certificate. Students need simply to initiate the process of transferring the credits with their four-year institution.

A benefit of the reverse transfer process is that studies show that students who successfully complete the associate’s degree are more likely to persist and complete a bachelor’s degree.

NISOD Award winners announced

Congratulations to NMC’s three recipients of NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) awards this year.

The honorees are:
Communications Instructor Nancy Gray
Communications Instructor Kristen Salathiel
Director of Business Division and NMC Academic Affairs Sue DeCamillis

Background on NISOD

Since its inception in 1978, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) has emphasized the importance of teaching and leadership excellence in institutions of higher education. NISOD has worked to serve, engage, and inspire teachers and leaders through our conferences, publications, web services, partnerships, programs, and more. In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its first ceremony, held in conjunction with our annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, honoring and naming the individuals featured in this study as recipients of the NISOD Excellence Award. The response to that ceremony was so positive that we decided to begin what has become a celebratory tradition. We are indebted to NISOD institutions for their continuing support of this annual celebration. The Excellence Awards tradition allows us the distinct privilege of honoring so many of the world’s best in higher education.

Costs associated with an unexpected illness or accident can have a serious effect on your family’s finances.  To help increase your financial protection, Northwestern Michigan College is offering eligible employees an opportunity to apply for Critical Illness and Accidental Injury insurance through Cigna effective May 1, 2013.  The enrollment period for this insurance is April 8 – 19, 2013.

Critical Illness and Accidental Injury insurance can help you pay out-of-pocket expenses not covered by traditional insurance. These plans provide a lump sum, cash payment directly to you as a result of a covered accident or serious illness. You can spend the money however you choose or use it to help pay for additional expenses such as transportation, room and board, child care, rehabilitation, and more.

This coverage is being offered to regular employees as well as adjunct and supplemental employees who have worked an average of 10 hours per week over a recent 12-month period.  It does not replace regular medical insurance or cover medical service claims, but it can supplement you with cash payments should you or your enrolled dependents experience a critical illness or accidental injury.  If you qualify for this insurance, you will have received an email from me earlier this week.
