Thanks to those in the NMC community for helping to raise awareness about basic needs in Traverse City. The public is invited to join in the 8th annual Walk for Health & Housing on Wednesday, November 15. The walk departs at 5:30 p.m. from the Great Lakes campus.
On November 20, the 10th annual Thanks-for-Giving project will distribute 135 Thanksgiving meal boxes to area families.
Both events are examples of experiential learning at NMC.

Thank you to everyone involved in planning and putting on the Veterans Day and Mariners Memorial services this Friday, Nov. 10. Serving those who have served is a year-round priority for NMC, and the Mariners Memorial Service, now in its 48th year, is sponsored by the Great Lakes Maritime Academy’s Student Propeller Club, Port 150.

NMC student Kiah Anderson and former student Logan Hudson created two new murals along the Boardman Lake Loop Trail this past summer. The pair helped faculty members Glenn Wolff and Rufus Snoddy complete another mural, Boardman Serenade, last year, and this year were invited to paint their own. Anderson’s mural is titled Serenity’s Muse and Hudson’s mural is titled May You Always Know the Truth and See the Light Surrounding You.

PRMC is proud to announce that NMC won 7 Medallion awards from the National Council for Public Relations and Marketing. This includes two gold medallions for recruitment campaigns and materials, silver medallions for Nexus, recruitment campaign materials and special event materials as well as bronze medallion awards for photography and microsite design. Thank you to all of the departments across the college we collaborated with for this exciting work! We’re excited for what we can do together next!

Congratulations to the Student Success team for receiving a $193,600 grant from Michigan’s Sixty by 30 Adult Student Success Grant program. The funds, to be received over two years, will be spent to improve adult student onboarding, based on the results of data and evidence on the current adult student experience.

Thanks to the NMC employees who volunteered at the first mobile food pantry of the semester last Tuesday. 110 households were served, or an estimated 400-500 people. The next mobile food pantry will occur on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and it will continue monthly through December.

Thanks to the Automotive Technology department for organizing this annual event on Saturday, Sept. 9 that benefits the program and scholarships. Classic cars, 4X4s, dragsters, sports cars, modified late models, motorcycles and more will be on display from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at NMC’s Automotive Services Building. Admission is free for spectators. The event includes food, music, prizes and a silent auction.

NMC’s Dental Assistant program has joined other community partners to open United We Smile, a dental clinic in Traverse City offering free care to children. Beckie Wooters, the Director of NMC’s Dental Assistant program, said that she hopes the partnership with the clinic will inspire more people to become dental assistants, too.

Café Lobdell’s, which functions as the capstone course in GLCI’s one-year baking certificate program, will reopen tomorrow for dine-in and carryout service.
Stop by the cafe to enjoy handcrafted drinks, and baked goods while witnessing experiential learning in action, all thanks to our talented students and dedicated colleagues at GLCI.
The cafe is open from 7:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through July 20.
