Throughout the month of January, the NMC Foundation is a recipient of the Beans for Bags project at Oryana Natural Foods Market. It’s easy to support student scholarships at Oryana this month, simply:
1. Shop at Oryana in January
2. Bring your own bag(s)
3. Put one bean per bag in the NMC Foundation jar at the Customer Service counter
We’re supporting NMC students as they pursue their educational dreams at NMC one bean at a time!

Happy New Year NMC!
In the past few days we launched a new look for
nmc.edu. This was a great team effort with a lot of input from students and employees. The goal was to help make it easier for potential students to take action from the homepage. While not a total redesign, the relaunched site has a new look and feel. There may be a few kinks to work out in the beginning. Please let us know if you see something that might need a tweak. And as always, we welcome your feedback.
Thanks,
Your PR, Marketing and Communications Team

Jack Ozegovic, instructor in NMC’s Fine Arts Department for over 20 years, passed away December 15. He was 86 and a resident of Lawrence, Kansas at the time of his passing. Read his obituary here.
From Glenn Wolff:
“I have learned sadly that we lost another very fine artist and elder yesterday. Jack Ozegovic, a great friend and mentor to me and many others, created the Printmaking department at Northwestern Michigan College back in the ’60s. Learning intaglio and lithography in that studio under his patient instruction, then working as his assistant, had a profound influence on me as an artist. He was also wise enough to boot my ass out the door after two years, insisting I go on to art school, when I was wavering about leaving. It was a true full circle honor recently to be hired by NMC and take over teaching that printmaking class. Thank you Jack. I will strive to do justice to that wonderfully analog shop that you created.”
From Paul Welch:
“Jack Ozegovic, Norm Averill, and I (right to left) were the beginning of the NMC Art department in the early 1960’s. We hired Jack from Gettysburg College, to develop the printmaking program at the college. It was his efforts and others who saw the major growth of the fine arts in the 1960’s and ’70s. Eventually, because of fine arts expansion, the art program moved into the Bauhaus designed Shirley Okerstrom Fine Arts Building on the campus. Jack is gone but not forgotten.”

Starting November 27, we’ll make some small changes to the appearance of the Google sign-in page. These follow changes made earlier this year, which updated the sign-in page to match the Material Design principles used in other Google products.
Specifically, you might notice outlines around some entry fields, and changes to the spacing and styling of other text on both the web and mobile screens. The changes will start to take effect on November 27 and may take up to two weeks to reach all users.
The image to the right depicts the sign-in page that will start rolling out on November 27.

NMC students, faculty, and staff:
I thank all of you who exercised your right to vote yesterday in our country’s mid-term election. In Michigan, voters approved the recreational use and possession of marijuana covered under Proposal 18-1 and it will become law ten days after the Secretary of State certifies the election and changes the state law regarding marijuana possession in Michigan.
Please be aware of the following:
Proposal 18-1 does not change NMC policies or federal laws. The use, distribution or possession of marijuana by students, employees or any person on college property or at college events is prohibited.
Using, distributing and possessing marijuana remains illegal under federal law. NMC must comply with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. As a recipient of federal funds, NMC takes measures to combat the use of drugs and alcohol.
Violating NMC policies may be grounds for discipline up to and including dismissal. Thank you for continuing to adhere to college policy and federal law.
Sincerely,
Timothy J. Nelson, President
