Kudos!

Kudos to Carolyn Andrews: Congratulations to Carolyn Andrews and her team for another wonderful Building Tomorrow event. Students were engaged and eager to learn about the different programs NMC has to offer.

Kudos to Kristy Jackson & The Extended Education & Training Team: College for Kids, in its 47th year, served 745 unique students ages 3-17 this summer with classes from Geology Rocks with NMC Instructor Tiffani Wilke, Instant Rock Bootcamp with NMC Instructor Brady Corcoran, to Model-Makers: Build a Sustainable Demonstration House with MTU instructor Jay Meldrum, and 85 more experiential and exceptional classes! Kristy Jackson, College for Kids Program Manager, and the Extended Education & Training team held the most financially successful College for Kids summer term on record. Net revenue* increased profit per seat by 49% from last year in 2023. Expenses decreased by 40% from 2023. In addition, Extended Education & Training awarded over $20,000 in scholarships to College for Kids families to make programming accessible to more learners. College for Kids is now positioned to grow enrollment and programming in a financially sustainable model. *Net Revenue is program profit, not including NMC staff wages and benefits.

Kudos!

Kudos to Alyssa Irani; Alyssa has worked diligently to submit documentation and complete the required tasks for the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, helping NMC achieve Gold level status as a Veteran Friendly School for the 2024-2025 academic year. The Michigan Veteran-Friendly Schools Program recognizes academic institutions committed to supporting the needs of veterans and military-connected students. Institutions are awarded Gold-, Silver-, and Bronze-level status based on their veteran-centric services and programs. The Gold level is the highest designation awarded and the Gold level status not only recognizes the excellence of these institutions but also serves as a benchmark for others to aspire to in their efforts to support veterans and military-connected students. Congrats to Alyssa and the Veteran Services team!

Kudos to Robin Maloney; We are thankful for Robin Maloney’s professionalism and attention to detail. She regularly communicates with the library staff about the cleanliness of the library– which looks great, by the way!

Even though facilities is down four custodial positions and has been for quite some time, Robin cleaned a very difficult to access area that had been bothering us all (pesky flies on the high stairway window ledge). She thinks about the campus as the students’ home away from home and makes it welcoming. Robin exemplifies the NMC value of quality stewardship.

Kudos to Denny Nguyen; Denny has an amazing capacity for processing data and having it make sense for the rest of us! He recently was charged with a request that required extensive research, years and years of compiled data, and an eye for accuracy. He rose to the challenge, did the hard work (which was in addition to all of his other workload),produced an excellent end product and all the while with a gracious smile on his face. NMC is so fortunate to have someone like Denny holding up the NMC Values of Integrity, Collaboration, Respect, Stewardship and Excellence. THANK YOU Denny!

Kudos to Danielle Quinlan; Danielle Quinlan has been in her role as the Office Manager for NMC Extended Education & Training now for almost a year. Danielle very successfully took on the project of planning and conducting our first formal instructor meeting at the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center. Danielle worked with the Extended Education team to put together an instructor handbook and assembled instructor folders and name tags for each Extended Education instructor. We had a full house of instructors (over 20) and received excellent feedback, mostly around how much a sense of belonging this meeting created for them. They also reported how much they enjoyed hearing what other instructors were teaching this fall, from The Origin & Meaning of the Second Amendment, to the Art of Crossword Construction, to Functional Fitness (Kyle Morrison!) to Digital Essentials (Ali Thornton) – it was wonderful to see our instructors get to know each other a bit (and be interested in each other’s classes!). At Extended Education & Training, as the Office Manager & Registration Specialist, Danielle has made it her mission to ensure that every student, instructor, and staff member feels informed and welcome, and a sense of belonging. Thank you, Danielle!

Kudos!

Kudos to Ricky Hagberg, Michelle Beckett and Shane Reed. Ricky, Michelle, and Shane from the Technology Help Desk did such outstanding work the first-week faculty returned and again the first-week students returned. They helped over 150 walkups the first week students returned, plus hundreds and hundreds of phone calls and chats! Their knowledge and expertise are showing as more and more employees and students reach out to the Technology Help Desk with simple to very complex issues. I can't say THANK YOU enough to this team for their professionalism, patience, integrity, and overall willingness to support NMC in all things technology! Props to you 3!.

Kudos!

Kudos to Dylan Schaub & Chris Hanna. Chris and Dylan successfully upgraded all classroom and conference room PCs to Windows 11 before the Fall semester. Despite the challenges posed by older equipment and software, they demonstrated exceptional technical skills and problem-solving abilities to ensure a smooth transition. Their efforts have significantly enhanced our campus computing resources’ functionality and security, benefiting students and faculty alike. Thank you, Chris and Dylan, for your dedication and hard work!

Kudos to Adyn McHugh. Adyn is an amazing student who returned to a busy advising office after a summer working in Marine Technology. He immediately jumped right back into a busy work week, helping all of our teams in the week-before-classes scramble. Adyn confidently answers student questions and takes the time to provide a full and in-depth explanation. His professionalism and expertise in the office are only overshadowed by his passion for Marine Tech and his fellow students. Adyn has helped us greatly this week, all while preparing for his Fall semester.

Kudos!

Kudos to Tony Sauerbrey. Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility and Traverse Connect hosted a Drones & E-Boat Demo Event at Elk Rapids Marina as part of an Advanced Aerial Mobility project grant from the state. Tony showcased NMC’s unique fleet of uncrewed aerial systems for attendees and answered questions from state and local officials regarding the capabilities and use cases for drone technology. Tony demonstrated a drone’s unique ability to collect water samples in shallow waterways where a boat or ROV could not navigate. In addition to this event, Tony will be working on a regional healthcare initiative to use drones for medical applications to improve patient service.

Kudos to Becca Richarson & Sarah Montgomery-Richards. Instructors Becca Richardson and Dr. Sarah Montgomery-Richards are the dynamic duo who have, once again, held two successful sessions of College Edge Summer ’24. Eighteen students in three cohorts were able to successfully navigate the hybrid intensive, gaining $500 scholarships for the completion. Richardson instructed math for all sessions while Montgomery-Richards instructed English for our adult learning program and college success for our math boot camp attendees. The willingness and dedication shown by these two instructors to navigate challenges, yet remain steadfast in the pursuit of delivering educational opportunities to these groups of students is commendable and did not go unnoticed.

Kudos to Katy Knight. For years, the behind-the-scenes person responsible for coordinating fun and engaging events for the student success coaching team is at it again, this time as Office Manager for Student Life. This summer, Katy Knight has been hard at work preparing for Fall 2024 Welcome Week events. For the first week of the semester, we will see students mingling with their instructors at “Popcorn & Professors,” Kayaking on Grand Traverse Bay, Bowling at Lucky Jack’s, and Going Nuts for Donuts, not to mention the biggest event of them all, attending “Pineplooza!” Events on campus are a great way to help students get connected to others and the community. If you are out at any or all of these events, be sure to give Katy a shout-out for all the work she does to help kick off our academic school year with excitement!

Kudos to Sharon Angel. Kudos to Sharon Angel for maintaining such a clean and pleasant environment at the Parsons-Stulen Building. She recently waxed the floors, and they are glowing!! Sharon gave extra attention to the vending area. In addition, the building, offices, and bathrooms are meticulously maintained year around. Thank you Sharon!

Kudos to the Hagerty Center Team. The whole Hagerty Center team always put so much into every event we host with them. The front of house sneak around behind the scenes to make sure beverages are always filled and plates are always cleared and are so efficient at what they do. The back of house team always prepares delicious food that’s worth raving about, their recent addition of breakfast sandwiches met a needed niche of a breakfast between continental and buffet. The bartending team serves with a welcoming smile. And last but certainly not least the supervising and coordinating team always make sure that there’s no details missed and that everything runs smoothly. Together they make quite the dream team and we truly appreciate the passion and commitment they put into every event we host with them.

Kudos to Hollianne McHugh. Hollianne took the lead and organized lab/storage space to accommodate an instructor. She pulled together all the instructors involved, and came up with a solution that works. All this just 3 days before the semester is to begin. Hollianne has been vital in the tech division. Along with teaching full time, she promotes our manufacturing programs, encourages students, works with instructors in all areas, and oversees the manufacturing lab. She took on a daunting task of organizing the lab and storage of equipment and supplies for easier access. Thank you Hollianne, you are appreciated!!

Kudos!

Kudos to Paul Martin. Paul made the transition of moving the S and Q drives into an easy format of Google Drive. The best part? I didn’t have to learn any codes, go through three hours of training, or struggle through this (what seemed to me) enormous task.

Kudos to Christa Abdul-Karim, Tammy Coleman, Jennifer Ewing, Scott Goethals, Sarah Montgomery-Richards, and Elizabeth Sonnabend. In 2023 the Michigan Public Health Institute hired Extended Education & Training to provide a bi-monthly noon webinar for the Michigan Department of Environmental Health staff throughout the state. In 2024 they asked us back again for monthly webinars! NMC employees who have or are signed up to be speakers include Dr. Christa Abdul-Karim, Dr. Tammy Coleman, Jennifer Ewing, Scott Goethals, Dr. Sarah Montgomery-Richards, and Elizabeth Sonnabend. Average attendance is 50-75 of their 450 employees. They’ve used this as both professional development and employee engagement as most of their workforce is remote.

Kudos to Lynne Moritz. Ms. Moritz went above and beyond to onboard this new CAO/Vice President of College Advancement, especially in preparing me a well-thought-out Orientation Binder. In my 29+ year career in higher education, this is the very first time someone has done this…in my past institutions, I had to personally sift through data and request my own onboarding information. I am deeply grateful to you Ms. Moritz for doing this for me and being ready on Day One.

Kudos!

Kudos to Nancy Durecki, Linda Glaesmer, Wendy Roberts, Jim White, and Patrick Quinlan. A huge thank You to Nancy Durecki and NMC Facilities Department. A visually impaired student has been frequenting campus for a summer program he is enrolled in. The student takes public transportation and has been standing for long periods of time in front of the Innovation Center in hopes to not miss the BATA bus. A call to ask if it would be possible to have a small bench placed in front of the building was quickly responded to by our Facilities team. Thank you for accommodating the needs of our student so quickly.

Kudos to Shannon Croll. There is no one “good deed” that Shannon has done, rather a multitude of kind actions has led to this kudos. As an Academic and Career Advisor, she warmly greets her students, gives thoughtful consideration to her advice and sets students up on a path for success. She is responsive to employee communication and is quick to follow up or schedule with a student who is in need of an advisor. No question is foolish and no request is too big, Shannon embodies our college’s mission by helping to transform the lives of our students (and staff) daily.

Kudos!

Kudos to Chester Kelly, Becca Richardson, Dr. Sarah Montgomery-Richards and Hannah Rodriguez. Compliments to Hannah, Sarah and Becca for their outstanding work in the first session of Adult College Edge, hosted June 3rd to June 28th at the Innovation Center. For some adult students, going back to college can be a challenge. This team implemented a successful program helping their students get an extra edge in math, English and college success before their first semester started. In support of the initiative, Chester was there for every in-person session providing math tutoring services and helping all of the program completers to pass the course.

Kudos to Tait Ricks. On July 8th for most of the afternoon, Tait Ricks, College Completion Coach through the Michigan College Access Network and part of NMC’s Student Success Coaching Team could be found out in the Success Center working one on one with a student having a difficult time. She worked patiently with the student, helping him to make a success plan to complete his accelerated summer class. She listened as he shared his story and the things that were becoming barriers to his success and identified solutions that would help. Tait’s kind and caring approach to this student’s struggle was commendable. Thank you for taking the extra time to help a student in need!
