Contemporary Chinese Photography exhibition at the Dennos Museum Center

Adou -  Father and Son Going Home 2006The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition, 如何回How to Return?” – Images by Contemporary Chinese Photographers June 1 – September 7, 2014.

As China reaches the point of its post-boom years, Exhibition Curator, Steven Harris of M97 Gallery, suggests a more contemplative period is setting in. We are entering a time where the general pulse of society has seen through the veil of glittery consumerism and all it promised, and now artists and thinkers are looking, in many ways, how to return to find what’s left of their roots.

This exhibition features the work of seven noted photographers in China: Adou, Huang Xiaoliang, Liang Weizhou, Lu Yanpeng, Luo Dan, Song Chao, and Wang Ningde presenting contemporary images of the Chinese people and environment, reflecting tradition, change and offering social commentary. (more…)

Small Works Art Sale at the Dennos Museum Center

Glenn WolffThe Dennos Museum Center is offering art patron’s an opportunity to purchase original art work by Northern Michigan’s creative artists, in the museum’s 6th annual Small Works art sale from May 15-18, 2014.

All art work is no larger than 5” X 7” and affordable with prices ranging from $5-$50. Artists will bring in work in all 2D media, paintings, prints and photography plus 3D work in media of fiber, wood, ceramics and sculptures. Last year’s sale represented 80 artists who brought in over 800 works of art. (more…)

Great Lakes Pastel Society exhibition at the Dennos Museum

Contemplative, Debra Van LeenThe Dennos Museum Center will present the Great Lakes Pastel Society’s 2014 National Juried Exhibition April 13 – May 25, 2014.

The exhibition is being presented in Traverse City in association with the Society’s annual convention which will be held at the Park Place Hotel from May 16-18, a 3 day educational event filled with presentations and demonstrations designed especially for amateur and professional pastel artists.

The exhibition features 70 works by artists from across the USA, and one from Spain, that were selected by exhibition juror, Desmond O’Hagan, from 254 works submitted  by 97 artists for consideration by the juror.

The Great Lakes Pastel Society seeks to promote the use of pastels and increase the public awareness of creative pastel painting as a fine art medium. The juror awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and 17 additional awards of merit and sponsored awards which will be presented to the artists at a Pastel Society Members and Guests Reception, Friday, May 16, 2014 from 7-9 PM at the Dennos Museum Center. Bob James to perform at the Dennos for S. Korean artist fan, Seungmo Park

Bob James_2013 8x10 colorThe Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the Grammy Award winning Jazz pianist Bob James and the Bob James Quartet on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 8:00 PM in the Milliken Auditorium. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door, $30 for Museum Members plus fees. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Museum Box office at 231-995-1553 or on line at www.dennosmuseum.org. Tickets will only be available to Museum Members through April 12. Current non-members can buy tickets before April 12 by joining as a member prior to buying a ticket. Jay Ungar and Molly Mason with the Family Band to perform at the Dennos
