Celebrate NMC’s renovated harbor Oct. 19
NMC invites the community to join a celebration marking completion of renovations to the Great Lakes Campus harbor at 2 p.m. Oct. 19.
The $2.6 million renovation project, overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, began in fall 2013. Dredged to a depth of 16 feet, the harbor is now useable by a variety of vessels. The old riprap breakwall was replaced by a concrete pier offering ten mooring cleats to accommodate training and research vessels, including the Northwestern, the research vessel for NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, and several Great Lakes Maritime Academy vessels. Holiday Art Fair at Dennos Museum Center
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College presents its annual Holiday Art Fair, with preview opening Thursday, October 23, 5-8 pm and continuing Friday through Sunday, October 24-26, throughout the museum. Fine arts and crafts from 50 Michigan artists, Christmas and Chanukah gifts, arts and crafts kits and more are just a few of the enticements for holiday shoppers. Hours will be Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m.
The Holiday Art Fair has become well known for featuring fine arts and crafts by Michigan artists. Artists are encouraged to bring original art in all price ranges but especially priced below $30. This gives customers lots of choices for choosing original art as a holiday gift. The fair is well balanced with artists representing the mediums of blown glass, soft and metal sculptures, pottery, prints, printings, photographs, jewelry, fibers and much more. Many of the artists have been in the sale for a number of years but each year new artists are added to make the show fresh and exciting. (more…)
Cape Dorset annual graphics collection and sale
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will continue its tradition of exhibiting and selling the Cape Dorset Annual Graphics Collection now through November 30, with the sale of prints beginning Friday, October 17. A reception and viewing of the prints will begin at 9:30 am with the sale beginning at 10:00 am. Sales will be conducted by a lottery, since many of the prints will be in high demand. Interested buyers may receive a catalog, price list and lottery information by calling the museum store 231- 995-1586. Customers need not be present to purchase a print. (more…)
Benefits corner- ING changes its name to Voya Financial
ING, the third-party administrator for the State of Michigan 401(k) and 457 Plans through MPSERS (Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System), has changed its name from ING to Voya Financial™ effective 9/1/2014. Voya’s website for these plans has also been changed from stateofmi.ingplans.com to https://stateofmi.voyaplans.com/eportal/welcome.do to reflect the name change. The old address (stateofmi.ingplans.com) will remain active until autumn of 2015. (more…)

Transfer Fair will take place Oct. 14
Stop by the NMC Transfer Fair on Tuesday, October 14! Admission reps from four-year schools will be in the Welcome Center of the Health/Science Building and the lobby of West Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be available to answer specific transfer related questions such as: Are transfer scholarships available? What is the minimum GPA required for admission? And who is the contact person for the program I’m interested in pursuing there? (more…)
Fifth Third jumpstarts Annual Fund campaign
TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College heads into its 2014 Annual Fund campaign with an extra bonus from Fifth Third Bank.
Fifth Third in September doubled their yearly gift to the NMC Annual Fund to $10,000, creating a new “Capstone” level of support. The bank has supported the college for more than 30 years.
“Investing in education is a priority for Fifth Third. We’re happy to give back,” said Fifth Third Vice President John Melcher.
Fifth Third is part of a group of generous organizations and individuals who serve as Annual Fund lead donors, each making gifts of $5,000. Lead donors are American Waste, Chemical Bank, Ford Insurance, H. Cox & Son, Jordan Exploration, the Art & Mary Schmuckal Family Foundation, and the Noverr Family. Combined, these donors have contributed 20 percent of the $225,000 the campaign seeks to raise for the Annual Fund by June 30.
The NMC Foundation’s Annual Fund is comprised only of gifts to the unrestricted fund and those designated for general scholarships. Unrestricted giving ensures that NMC has the agility to respond to industry demands, community priorities, and the changing needs of learners. The 2013 Annual Fund campaign exceeded its goal of $200,000.

Global Literature Reading Group to hold discussion

NMC Soccer Club splits weekend matches
NMC’s soccer club defeated Lake Superior State University soccer club 3-0 on Saturday, before dropping a closely contested match 3-2 against Ferris State University soccer club on Sunday.
The Hawk Owls are now 1 win, 2 loses on the season and travel to Lake Superior State University this coming Sunday for matches against LSSU and Michigan Tech soccer club teams.

Golden Dragon Acrobats to perform at the Dennos Museum Center
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the return of The Golden Dragon Acrobats from China on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 8 PM in Milliken Auditorium. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door, $22 for Museum Members plus a $2 processing fee. New BATA City Loop routes to launch Nov. 1, public forums will be held for questions
Last spring many from the community gave input at meetings regarding BATA bus company’s City Loop service. Since then, the operations team at BATA has been hard at work reviewing the data which was provided and revising the routes. (more…)

“The renovation of the harbor is a critical element in our long-standing strategic direction to establish national and international competencies and provide leadership in the select area of freshwater,” said NMC President Timothy J. Nelson. “Having an accessible harbor will assure passage of our vessels that support our new bachelor degree in Maritime Technology and associate degrees in Freshwater Studies.”
Great Lakes Maritime Academy Superintendent Jerry Achenbach credited U.S. Sen. Carl Levin for his efforts to secure the funding for the renovation.
“Sen. Levin has worked tirelessly in support of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, and the Great Lakes shipping industry. The training ship State of Michigan and the recently-renovated harbor are direct results of not only his hard work, but his interest in ensuring that Michigan residents can be trained, in Michigan, for sea-going careers on Great Lakes vessels,” Achenbach said.
Originally dedicated in 1972, the harbor had most recently been updated in 2005, as part of the Great Lakes Campus construction and to accommodate the Maritime Academy’s training ship, the T/S State of Michigan.

Sodexo joins the fight to end childhood hunger
Throughout October all Sodexo locations on our campuses will be donating a portion of sales from certain items to go toward ending childhood hunger.
General Mill’s will be donating 10¢ of each sales of Chocolate Almond Parfaits to the Sodexo Campaign to End Hunger.
In addition, Sodexo will be selling cookies with orange chocolate chips to show support for the cause. (Orange is the color for hunger awareness.) (more…)
