Thank you all for everything you do in pursuit of “Keeping Learning at the Center.”
Activities of Note: Faculty and Staff
• On March 6th, the Upward Bound program staff, in conjunction with the The Rotary Club of Traverse City (STRIVE PROGRAM) organized and offered the 1st Annual Upward Bound Career Fair. The event took place at NMC’s Oleson Center, where twenty-seven Rotarians (including NMC’s very own Ross Childs) from various professionals met with our Upward Bound students. The designed format allowed for each student to rotate around the room and ask questions of each Rotarian. The intended outcome was that each Upward Bound student be exposed to a variety of professionals as part of their career and college planning. Students would also have the opportunity to further develop their interpersonal communication skills.
Evaluation results from both Rotarians and students alike, indicated that the event was hugely successful. As first-time events can sometimes go, it exceeded our expectations. The plan now is to offer the event each year…. incorporating a few changes as suggested in the evaluations (as part of the Plan, Do, Adjust improvement process). (more…)

There is good news to report to all who have been anticipating the progress from the duck’s nest located at the entry of the Dennos Museum Center. On Friday evening (4/27/12) Stephen and Carolyn Drake observed the mother duck safely leading the ten ducklings to Scholars Hall where they will be educated properly in reading and writing. The mother patiently waited until the last duckling negotiated the parking lot curbing before moving onward to Scholars Hall. NMC has always attracted “those” who have direction and are persistent.

You and Your Home PC…
The following article from US News outlines an issue that may directly affect you and your home PC. Last year the FBI identified a group of international hackers who were “running an Internet ad scam on a massive network of home computers.” The FBI has since shut down the operation and realized that they could not just pull the plug on all of the infected users. So, they are encouraging home PC users to visit a website run by its security partner to see if their home computer is infected. Please take a moment before July 9, and read the article below. Also, visit www.dcwg.org to inform yourself on whether your home computer is infected and needs attention. http://www.usnews.com/news/technology/articles/2012/04/20/hundreds-of-thousands-may-lose-internet-in-july

The NMC Wellness Olympics registration has been extended to May 1, 2012.
You can sign up for both or only one of the two-parts: Olympic Training and Olympic Events.
Olympic Training
During Olympic Training participants will keep track of points through an online form. 15 minutes of exercise = 1 point. Because we know that NMC staff are trustworthy, they will self report the week of the exercise. As well, participants will determine if they are a “Veteran Olympian” (currently exercising 3x per week) or “Amateur Olympian” (currently exercising less than 2x per week).
Olympic Events
A variety of events will be occurring during the Olympics (July 27-August 12). These events are still to be determined.
What’s my next step?
