Summer exhibitions open at Dennos Museum Center

First comes love, then comes marriage. Then comes a baby carriage, satisfying careers, buffalo burgers, saving money through dual enrollment, and supervising the beanbag toss.
That’s Barb Mort’s story, anyway. The alumna and Traverse City resident has a bird’s eye view of NMC, having seen the college as a student, parent, volunteer and colleague. Whatever lens she’s looking through, Mort says the view is always the same: Impressive.
“I’m just so proud that such a small community has a world-class college in it,” said Mort, whose story began with a fairy-tale start when she moved into the NMC apartments in 1979. Across the hall lived another student named Greg, from Charlevoix.
“It was truly love at first sight,” she said. “The very first time I met him, I knew I was going to marry him.”
They tied the knot in 1982, and then bride and groom enrolled in what was called Ferris State University’s “off campus program,” a predecessor to the University Center located in the old Maritime building (now site of the Great Lakes campus.)
“Neither one of us would have the careers we have without NMC and the off-campus program,” said Mort, who is now donor relations specialist at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy. Husband Greg is the business manager of a tool and die company. “It literally saved us tens of thousands of dollars in tuition.”
Fast-forward a few decades. The couple’s youngest son, Jackson, a senior at Traverse City West, is now dual-enrolled at NMC. He’s even had one of the same professors his parents did: Math instructor Ernie East.
“It’s been the best thing for him,” said Mort. “He loves the independence, how the professors teach. The one-on-one help he’s been getting is amazing.”
Mort also sees evidence of NMC’s value when she goes to work. The Conservancy hired an intern through NMC’s business department. He went on to earn a staff position, due to his strong performance which NMC supported, she said.
Mort’s latest role at NMC came about thanks to another quirk of proximity. The Conservancy’s office adjoins Oleson’s, the grocery store chain whose founders started the NMC Barbecue in 1956. The third generation of the family now continues that tradition, led by Brad Oleson, who recruited Mort for the Barbecue Board.
“I saw serving on the BBQ board as an avenue to give back to the college that has made such a difference to my family and community. I am also inspired by the Oleson family, who quietly contribute to so many worthwhile organizations in our region,” Mort said.
Set for May 17 this year, Barbecue Day is the culmination of nine months of work by the Board, and Mort will be busy co-supervising kids’ games. She’ll make sure to find time to squeeze in her own buffalo burger, though.
“I’m a really picky eater but I love the buffalo burgers,” she said.
Graphic designer Aaron Draplin returns to Traverse City
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College presents Tall Tales from a Large Man on June 19, 2015 at 7pm, in conjunction with the exhibition, Sideways: Exploring Skateboard Art + Culture, May 31 – September 6, 2015. The event kicks off a weekend of art, skateboarding, and music that will take place at the Museum and Civic Center Skate Park on June 20-21. More details will be available online at dennosmuseum.org.
NMC Alumnus and graphic designer Aaron James Draplin returns to Traverse City on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 7pm for a presentation on his life and work. Abandoned bike pick up slated for May 15
Summer is here and the NMC Security Department is asking for your help. Security will be tagging bicycles on campus which appear to be abandoned. Bikes slated for pick-up will have a tag attached to the bike’s chain sprocket. If your bicycle is tagged, simply remove the tag to let Security know that the bike is still in use and not abandoned. Bikes with tags left on them will be picked up after noon on Friday, May 15, 2015.

TEDxTraverseCity simulcast location on main campus
The fifth annual TEDxTraverseCity event will take place at the Milliken Auditorium on Wednesday, May 13. This full day event (9am-4:30pm) will be simulcast to the State Theater again this year as well as live streamed to the Web. If you have not secured a ticket for the Milliken or State Theater venues, you can watch the event from the comfort of your office. Three named 2015 Outstanding Alumni
TRAVERSE CITY — Three alumni have been named the 2015 recipients of NMC’s Outstanding Alumni award.
Created in 1988, the award recognizes alumni for professional achievement and community and professional leadership. The 2015 recipients, announced at Saturday’s commencement, are:
Sally Rogers, class of 1981 – Rogers took her first art class on campus at the age of 15, and knew immediately that visual arts were her passion. She graduated in 1981 with her associate’s degree and went on to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art. Her career took her to North Carolina, where she built a studio and still lives and works today, focusing on large scale sculptures of steel, glass, stone and wood. In 2004 her sculpture, “Nexus” was installed on the east side of the Health and Science building. Rogers is also the daughter of the late Joe Rogers, a longtime math and science instructor and the namesake of NMC’s Joseph H. Rogers Observatory.
Gary Seabrook, class of 1972 – After NMC Seabrook attended the University of Michigan and Wayne State University medical school. He is now chief of the department of vascular surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Education was a value deeply instilled in Seabrook by his mother, Joanne, and in her memory he has created a significant endowed scholarship for business students.
Al Zelinski, class of 1983 – Zelinski is a member of the commercial lending team at Honor Bank. He has served on the NMC Foundation Board’s Scholarship Open committee since 2005. He chaired the event, the college’s largest single-day fund raiser, for two years, more than doubling its net profit. He joined the Foundation Board in 2014 and has expanded his fund raising activities still further.
Read about past Outstanding Alumni here. Alumni interested in reconnecting should plan to stop by the Alumni Tent at the NMC Barbecue on May 17. Located under the pines in front of Osterlin Library, the tent will include a drawing for a new bike, the traditional quilt raffle as well as other prizes, NMC swag, appearances by nursing alumni seeking to support current nursing students, and by Paul Welch, whose department’s role in shaping the region’s thriving art community is chronicles in the new retrospective book, A Colorful Cast.

Board of Trustees meeting recap- April 20, 2015
Here is an informal account of the Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees meeting, Monday, April 20, 2015.

The trustees voted to appoint Chris M. Bott to fill the vacant seat. The term runs through December 31st, 2016.
Alex Bloye was introduced as the new Director of Aviation. Betsy Coffia was introduced as the new Director of Alumni Relations.
The Board discussed an early look at the FY16 budget with Vicki Cook.
The Board discussed EDUStaff with Marguerite Cotto and Vicki Cook.
There were several public comments on a possible partnership with EDUStaff encouraging the Board to take time on making a decision and more research.
The Board approved the consent items.
The Board agreed to entering into training agreements for the New Jobs Training Act.
The Board agreed to establishing an associates degree in Paramedics.
The Board agreed to a roof replacement.
The Board adopted a resolution of appreciation to Cheryl Gore Follette for her years of service as a trustee.
