Missy Memorial scholarship night

Magnum Hospitality will hold its eighth annual Missy Memorial Scholarship fundraiser on June 21 at all four of its restaurant locations.

The scholarship fund for NMC Great Lakes Culinary students was created in 2005 in memory of Missy Kamyszek, a manager at Magnum’s Red Mesa Grill in Boyne City. On her birthday, June 21, the Red Mesa Grills in both Boyne City and Traverse City, Pearl’s in Elk Rapids and Cafe Santé in Boyne City will feature some of Missy’s favorite menu items and dedicate sales of the popular “Missy Margarita” to the scholarship fund. In addition, both Boyne City locations will feature live entertainment and a silent auction will be held at the Boyne Red Mesa Grill.

Since inception, the scholarship has awarded $8,000 to eight second-year culinary students.

For more information contact any Magnum Hospitality restaurant.

Sharing Lessons Learned

We’re looking for insights, new understanding, lessons learned from successes and failures. Our planning process calls for an end-of-year review both at the department and individual levels. Many of us will be having meetings with supervisors to review our FY’12 work and discuss goals for next year which will ensure that we achieve our departmental and ultimately college-wide plans. We’ve asked Leadership Group to lead their departments in an end-of-year review of their departmental operational plan. As part of these reviews, ORPE is asking that you identify “lessons learned” over the prior year.

So what are lessons learned? They can be anything from a process insight to a better understanding of student needs to an insight about resources to additional feedback on the planning process. If you feel it’s noteworthy, send it in. I’d rather have too many than too few lessons learned to share!

This feedback will become input into Grasping the Situation for the next planning cycle which begins this summer as ORPE prepares for the Strategy Retreat. A form is available on the intranet to make sending in your lessons learned an easy process. You can send them in as individuals and/or as departments…just send them in! Please find the form here and
send in your lessons learned by June 27. Questions? Contact Karen Ruedinger at 5-1032 or kruedinger@nmc.edu.

This Month in NMC History – May

50 Years Ago:

  • Nearly 6,000 people were served at the BBQ – setting a new record.  Harry Hibbard’s Riverboat Seven provided the entertainment.  Right up to the last minute, the college was asking for more donations of cakes for the Cake Walk.

25 Years Ago:

  • Phillip Runkel (NMC president 1987-89) began his first month on the job (see photo).  Mr. Runkel replaced George Miller, and then he was succeeded by Tim Quinn.

Business, Maritime instructors named 2012 Faculty Excellence winners

Business instructor Kristy McDonald is NMC’s 2012 Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award winner. Maritime instructor John Biolchini is the 2012 Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award winner.

Chosen by a student selection committee, award criteria includes teaching excellence, rapport with students, innovation in the classroom and a sense of dedication. McDonald began working in NMC’s Career Services office in 2006 and moved to the faculty in 2011. Biolchini joined the Maritime program in 2007.

In nominating McDonald, students said:

  • “Her class is truly the highlight of my week.”
  • “This instructor deserves recognition for the way students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone to help them reach their full potential.  I am so glad that I had this experience because I left that class a changed person.”

McDonald said she was particularly gratified by comments like the latter.

“It takes it outside of the academic lens,” she said. “We do more than that at NMC. We touch people’s lives in so many ways we don’t even know it.”

In nominating Biolchini, students said:

  • “Captain John Biolchini has over 30 years of sailing experience, and his expertise has been so evident during the two years I have been attending the Academy.”
  • “Captain Biolchini’s teaching style in phenomenal.  His Integration of personal sailing exploits, practical lessons on river navigation, and a through instruction of textbook seamanship makes his class one of the most important and influential in his students’ academic careers at NMC.”

“This award is really their award,” Biolchini said of the Maritime cadets. “The students have to give you the opportunity to teach at your peak.”

The Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award was initiated by a contribution from longtime NMC benefactors Harold and Imogene Wise in 1970 and first awarded to a full-time faculty member in 1971. The NMC Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award was created as a companion in 1999.

Three Named Outstanding Alumni

Alumni from three different decades have been named as NMC’s 2012 Outstanding Alumni.

The three are:

  • Kathleen McManus, who earned a nursing degree in 1974 and is now executive vice president and chief operating officer at Munson Medical Center
  • Steven Rawlings, a 1991 aviation alumnus who is now regional manager of corporate and government affairs for DTE Energy
  • Timothy Young, a 1982 graduate who is founder, president and chef of Food For Thought, Benzie County-based creators of organic and wild-harvested gourmet specialty foods.

Created in 1988, the Outstanding Alumnus award recognizes alumni for professional achievement, community and professional leadership and/or donations of time, talent and resources to NMC. The three were named the 2012 recipients at NMC’s annual Commencement ceremony on May 5.

McManus, of Traverse City, said she considers her nursing education and the patient care she went on to do post-graduation “foundational” to the leadership position she now holds.

“There have been so many experiences associated with having that good foundational work,” she said, adding that growing up with four other siblings in a single-income household, simply having NMC accessible was a critical starting point for her career. “Then you could use that as your platform,” she said.

As an alumnus, McManus has served on NMC’s nursing advisory board. She and Munson have also actively supported NMC’s advocacy for legislation to allow Michigan community colleges to offer baccalaureate degrees in nursing.

Rawlings, of Kingsley, is a second-generation NMC student. After earning an aviation degree at NMC, he pursued his bachelor’s at Ferris State University through the University Center, and then earned a master’s from Michigan State. He now serves as regional manager of corporate and government affairs for DTE Energy.

“NMC has just as rigorous and challenging, if not even more challenging classes than either of the universities I’ve attended,” Rawlings said.

In his capacity at DTE Rawlings has secured corporate support for NMC’s Water Studies program, the Dennos Museum Center, and scholarships and programs. He is halfway through a two-year commitment as co-chair of NMC’s Annual Campaign.

“I take the community service seriously, and I’m very grateful I have an employer that not only encourages its employees to become engaged but supports its employees to connect with the communities in which we live,” he said.

Young, of Honor, recalled being enrolled at the University of Detroit school of architecture when he decided he didn’t really want to study architecture.

“What I really got out of NMC was a space to grow and mature,” Young said. While he went on to study internationally and earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, “I look back most fondly at NMC as the most formative years of my life.” He founded Food for Thought in 1995 and is extensively involved in humanitarian and environmental activism.

Young is currently a member of both NMC’s Foundation Board and Barbecue Board. Three years ago, he was among the leaders of a move to initiate composting at the annual NMC Barbecue and significantly increase recycling.
