NMC to hold 8th Annual Mike McIntosh Memorial Truck & Car Show
A September tradition at NMC’s Automotive Service Technology Building on Aero Park Drive, the memorial show is named for the late NMC Automotive instructor Mike McIntosh, who retired in 2004 after 34 years of service. McIntosh organized the first car show for the Automotive Program in 2004.
Owners are invited to enter their classic cars, 4X4s, dragsters, sports cars, modified late models, motorcycles and more. There is a $10 entry fee per vehicle. Trophies are awarded for best of show in each class. Admission is free and the public is invited for food, a silent auction — including program vehicles — and door prizes for entrants. Proceeds benefit NMC’s Automotive Program. Sponsors include Canteen Services.
Student projects and vehicles will be displayed in the Automotive Technology facility. The Michigan Community Blood Center will also be on site with its blood bus for those eligible and willing to donate.

Remembering Tom Priest and Jim McIntyre
Tom Priest and Jim McIntyre died in August 2013.
Both of these men worked on behalf of NMC for many years.
Tom took great care of the grounds at NMC. The plants, flowers, trees and the natural environment were his thing.
For many years, Jim was part of the creative team at Knorr Marketing. Jim’s voice was heard in many of the ads for NMC.
All of us at NMC benefited from the contributions both of these men made. A big thank you and our thoughts are with their families.

Welcome to NMC Cindy!
Cindy Weaver joined NMC in the position of Medical Office Manager in Health Services on September 3, 2013. She can be reached at 995-1255 or cweaver@nmc.edu.
Cindy recently moved to the area from Kansas City with her husband Doug and their two dogs. They have vacationed Up North for the last 30+ years and after their daughter Meghan married, and son Zach graduated college, they finally realized their dream of moving up to Traverse City. Cindy has worked the last eight years in a pediatricians office but has also worked for antique auctioneers, home builders and banks. In her spare time she likes to hike, read, and she is currently looking for some folks that want to play Asian Mah Jong. Anyone who is interested should let her know!

NMC instructor Caroline Schaefer-Hills launches children’s book on Kickstarter
NMC Humanities instructor Caroline Schaefer-Hills proudly wishes to announce the launch of her children’s book, The Annotated Alphabet- A Vocabulary for Children on Kickstarter.
“The Annotated Alphabet- A Vocabulary for Children is a beautifully whimsical, yet contemporary, surreal children’s book that opens the alphabet by using exceptional words that stress a language revival while encouraging word play and poetry. A romping prose style features advanced words for a child’s alphabet book, exposing the reader / listener to the pearls our language has to offer, instead of the “A is for Apple” treacle that has become the traditional artifact of this genre. Paired with modern graphic design and daring oil paintings as illustration, this book brightens and deepens the classroom experience or your child’s library and is at home on the coffee table, in gallery, or with modern design readings.
With at least three complex words used on each page, annotations (as tear-off bookmarks) provide definitions and linguistic classification, usage and word origin for each. A primer introducing pronunciation, etymology and poetry structure would be included as well as extra words to encourage active word play and hands-on classroom or home activity.”

Thanks to quick thinking and tremendous flexibility we were able to serve ice water to students in a very warm Scholars Hall on the first day of classes. With no air conditioning first thing in the morning, and first day jitters running high, it was a great comfort to students and faculty in Scholars Hall to know that NMC was taking care of them. Thank you to Elizabeth Stevens, Roy Bartle and Patrick Tesner for their immediate action, and to Facilities for their quick response.
Kudos to Jeff Send and Jeff Sabins for a great job replacing the carpet in HS110. Because this is a dental lab, it required quite a bit more logistics than an average classroom. Thanks for your quick turnaround and a great job!
Kudos to all of the Facilities staff who have been actively involved in a number of renovation projects this summer. These projects require a great deal of planning, logistics and collaboration between departments and all involved did a great job. Thank you.
Kudos to all faculty and staff for another successful opening week. Kudos to all the Academic Chairs and Area Instructional Leaders for their work in managing the course enrollments this fall. As a result of their hard work, the college has the highest course efficiency rates in the last three years.
Ryan Adams, Student Employee in Residence Life, always has a positive attitude and a welcoming smile. New students often come to NMC to tour the campus, and some specifically the dorms. Even during this hectic week at the beginning of the new semester, Ryan went above and beyond to show new students the dorm rooms. Ryan, we thank you so much for all of your help and always doing any task with a smile on your face. You are a great representative of our school!

Are you ready for some flag football!
Intramural sports will begin on Monday, September 16. The first sport will be flag football and will run for 6 weeks.
Team sign up sheets are available in the recreation and intramural sports office (PE 102), or the East Hall front desk. Sign-up deadline is Thursday, September 12.
A mandatory Captains Meeting will occur on September, 12 at 5 p.m. in the West Hall cafeteria.

Pine Palooza Photo Contest announced
Announcing the first ever Pine Palooza Photo Contest! Take photos during Pine Palooza 2013 and you could win prizes!
HOW TO ENTER
Pine Palooza (September 10, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on the greens between East and West Halls) is the perfect backdrop for snapping photos of the fun, the food and your friends! During the event, presented by NMC Student Life, take photos and upload them to your Instagram. Filters are acceptable, captions are encouraged and tagging is a must! Use @NMCdotEDU or #NMCinPhotos to tag your photo.
PRIZES
Judging will occur after the event concludes and winners will be announced September 13.
The top three Instagram photos from the event will win: a $50 gas gift card, a NMC priorLife bag, or $15 for any Sodexo food stand.

Call for singers- Auditions for Canticum Novum
Experienced singers of college-age or older are invited to audition for Canticum Novum (kahn’-tee-koom noh’-voom), a new choral ensemble being offered at Northwestern Michigan College. Canticum Novum has several performance cycles throughout the year, with an emphasis on performances in December and late Spring. Because of the challenging literature and the abbreviated rehearsal schedule, only singers with good reading skills should inquire.

Military & Veteran Outreach Services support annual Traverse City Patriot Game for military veterans and fallen heroes
A budding Traverse City tradition will continue this September 13th as the rival high school football teams of Traverse City Central and Traverse City West engage in a game to honor Northern Michigan veterans and to give special recognition to those who have lost their lives in recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Attendees are asked to purchase shirts to wear to the game in support of their team. Supporters of Central are asked to purchase blue shirts and supporters of West are asked to purchase red shirts to show the friendly rivalry which supports a good cause. The shirts will be available for purchase around Traverse City, including in the office of Military & Veteran Outreach Services on NMC’s campus. Shirts are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Children’s Choir auditions scheduled
Come join the award-winning NMC Children’s Choir for its 23rd season. Students entering Kindergarten through grade 9 this fall who love to sing and want to improve their abilities are invited to participate in NMC’s award-winning Children’s Choir. Brief auditions for students entering grades 3 to 9 will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 10 & 12 in the Fine Arts Building at NMC. Students will be asked to sing the first verse of “America the Beautiful”. Music and accompaniment is provided.

Northwestern Michigan College and the Family Educational Rights And Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 as Amended
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, helps protect the privacy of student records. The Act provides for the right to inspect and review educational records, the right to seek to amend those records and to limit disclosure of information from the records. The Act applies to all institutions that are the recipients of federal funding.

- Fitness 101: If you are looking to start a new workout routine, shake up your current routine, or learn the basics of designing a routine sure to give you results, attend Fitness 101. Led by Fitness Center trainer Steven Dixon, this 45 minute session will be held September 6th & 20th, at 7am or 8am.
- Nutrition 101: Learn all the basics of healthy eating, meal planning, maintaining a healthy calorie balance and maximizing your households grocery budget. This 45 minute session, led by Wellness Coordinator Sarah Shimek, will be held September 13th & 27th at 12pm or 1pm.

NMC Great Lakes Water Studies student Chris Horvath is in Iceland this summer on a Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) internship aboard Columbia University’s research vessel the R/V Langseth, doing research on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
