Timothy J. Nelson, President, Northwestern Michigan College
A fundamental question for any organization, profit or not, is, “What do we do for whom at what value?” The answers to this ultimately define the business model for the enterprise. This then informs the cost structure, the market, and the pricing and revenue practices for the organization. The current trend of students paying more in absolute and proportionate share of the cost to operate the college has limits and may postpone answering this fundamental question (College Board Advocacy & Policy Center, 2012). In community colleges, tuition alone does not generate enough revenue to create a positive net margin. There is a saying, “No margin, no mission.”
The traditional revenue model for community colleges is different among the 50 states. (Education Commission of the States, 2000) In Michigan, the original bargain was said to be one-third each for local, state, and students. Today, state funding is a combination of legacy and a funding distribution formula adopted in 2007. (Jonasson, 2013)

When systems are in a transformative state, the underlying assumptions that influence their operations and purposes must be examined and questioned. One way to do this is to look at organizations or industries with similar characteristics and determine what we can learn and/or project from their journey. Thus, as higher education—in fact all of education—is faced with changing demands, changing demographics, technological advances and changing expectations we can look for a similar industry. I have long believed it is health care.
Consider that the federal government in 2010 passed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act. Looking at the health care reform component of this act and the sister Patient Protection and Affordability Act, is it worth asking, “What if these changes are applied to education and higher education?”

To all,
Bea’s family, as per her request, has decided not to have as service or memorial in her honor. The Technical Division has set-up a scholarship in Bea’s name with the intent of awarding the funds we receive to a student at next year’s Auto show event. This was Bea’s passion and seemed the most appropriate way to honor her. Her family thought this would be a wonderful tribute to Bea and that “She would love that!”, yet still in keeping with her wishes for no service or celebration.
Anyone who knew her and would like to remember Bea and her years of service at NMC this way are welcome to contribute. Contributions can be made to this scholarship via the NMC Foundation (including payroll deduction). Please contact the Foundation at (231) 995-1021 or online at www.nmc.edu/foundation. (Please specify that it is for the Technical Division Scholarship in Memory of Bea Gauthier.)
Questions? Please contact Ed Bailey, Technical Division Director at (231) 995-1215 or ebailey@nmc.edu

PAINTING WORKSHOP: “Do a Landscape, Then Do Something to the Landscape” with Hank Feeley
Janis Room at the Dennos Museum Center & NMC Grounds
Bring your lunch
$40 members / $50 non-members (includes $2 ticket fee)
The exhibition, Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, features many works that were painted outdoors or “en plein air.” Artist Hank Feeley will present a two day workshop incorporating traditional landscape techniques as well as exercises in creative exploration. With the instructor’s guidance you will paint a vivid landscape in an outdoor setting, and then add imaginative or unexpected elements to your work. This workshop is great for those just learning or artists who need to change things up.
Billy Collins writes, “If Hank Feeley were not so strikingly original, I would say that he stands at the intersection of Magritte and Marvel Comics, but as it is, he has his own way of disorienting the viewer so we can see again, now with our perception refreshed.”
Paradoxically, Feeley is a graduate of both Harvard Business School and The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). He is a lecturer and visiting artist at both Ox-Bow and SAIC, and is represented by First Street Gallery in New York and Packer/Schopf Gallery in Chicago. Feeley’s work is held in public and private collections nationally and internationally. His best-selling book, Painting the Magic of Sleeping Bear Country, was published recently by Leelanau Press.
Sunday, October 20, 2013 – 4:30pm – 7:30pm
PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP: An Introduction to the View Camera with Gregory D. Seman
At the Good Harbor Dock Pilings
(location: Off M-22 at the northern end of Good Harbor Trail/Co. Road 651)
$17 members / $22 non-members (includes $2 ticket fee)
In conjunction with his book and exhibition, Shine On, photographer Gregory D. Seman will demonstrate the use of his 8×10” film view camera during twilight hours on the Lake Michigan shoreline at Good Harbor. Participants are encouraged to bring their own camera for use on location. The fee for this workshop includes a boxed meal; menu is available online when you register. Participant will be responsible for paying admission to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, based on applicable rates, found at http://www.sleepingbeardunes.com .
Born and raised in Flint, Michigan in 1959, Traverse City became Gregory D. Seman’s adopted hometown in 1990. Greg’s lifelong fascination of black and white photography began at age twelve, when he taught himself to develop film and contact print; a passion that has continued to this day. He now photographs with 4×5 and 8×10 inch film cameras, exposing and developing each sheet of film individually, and printing the black and white negative himself on silver gelatin paper in the darkroom. The effort applied to each negative and print reflects Greg’s respect and passion for Michigan and his intention to portrait its uniqueness.
The Dennos Museum Center is open daily 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursdays until 8 PM, and Sundays 1-5 PM. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members. For more information on the Museum and its programs, go to www.dennosmuseum.org or call 231-995-1055. Following is a notice from the Chamber about another Health Care Reform event, being held on the evening of the special NMC presentation on Monday, 9/30/13. If you are unable to attend the lunchtime event, you can plan to either attend the evening program at the Milliken (click below to register), or watch it at home on TV 7&4. This program will also be recorded and available later on the UpNorthLive.com website for viewing.
Questions and concerns continue to swirl around the looming deadlines and requirements associated with the federal Affordable Care Act. Here’s an opportunity to find some answers.
TV 7 & 4 and UpNorthLive.com will host a televised community forum entitled “Understanding Health Care Reform” on Monday, Sept. 30 from 7 – 8 p.m. News anchor Kristen Lowe will host the live program in front of a studio audience gathered at the Milliken Auditorium at Northwestern Michigan College, while co-anchor Marc Schollett will staff an expert panel featuring Jeff Rubleski from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan and Marti Lolli of Priority Health back at the 7 & 4 studio. The panel will answer questions about the new health care regulations from the audience, by call-in to the television station, and online and via Twitter.
Pre-registration is encouraged for the studio audience because of limited seating, but attendance is free. Registration is available by clicking here. Members of the studio audience at NMC are encouraged to arrive by 6:45 p.m. for introductions and seating arrangements before the 7 p.m. air time.
Audience members will also be able to access informational resources that will be available at Milliken Auditorium, and meet with local health professionals who can answer questions on how to access the health care marketplace under the new regulations.
After the hour-long broadcast, the question-and-answer session will continue in a live chat on the UpNorthLive.com web site.
Partners in the community forum include the Traverse City Area Chamber, Northwestern Michigan College and Munson Healthcare, along with TV 7 & 4, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan and Priority Health. The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will host two significant exhibitions that take their origins from the northern Michigan landscape. They will be on view from October 13 – January 5, 2014. The two exhibitions are:
Shine On: Photographs of Northwest Michigan by Gregory D. Seman
This exhibition features new work and selected works from the collection of the Dennos Museum Center by photographic artist Greg Seman, and is presented in association with the publication of his monograph, Shine On – Northwestern Michigan Region, A Portfolio of Photographs by Gregory D. Seman cataloging many of the works in this exhibition. Seman’s black and white photographs are at once beautifully rendered, intimate portraits and haunting documentaries of the Northwest Michigan landscape. Shine On will be available for purchase in the museum store.
Born and raised in Flint, Michigan in 1959, Traverse City became Greg Seman’s adopted hometown in 1990. Greg’s lifelong fascination of black and white photography began in junior high school, when he taught himself to develop film and contact print; a passion that has continued to this day. He now photographs with 4×5 and 8×10 inch film cameras, exposing and developing each sheet of film individually, and printing the black and white negative himself on silver gelatin paper in the darkroom. Living in the northern Michigan region has been essential to his body of work; observing the shoreline transition from season to season and photographing on his daily commute or lunch hour, witnessing moments of dramatic change. Evenings allow for a time of exploration and becoming intimate with areas on the coast of Lake Michigan.
Greg has studied photography at Rochester Institute of Technology and with photographers, Howard Bond and John Sexton. Greg’s work is represented by photography dealer, Tom Halsted, and has been exhibited and held in the permanent collections of the Dennos Museum Center, Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the Toledo Institute of Arts.
Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes: Transforming Nature into Art
Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes: Transforming Nature into Art brings together over 100 local and regional artists presenting their interpretations of one of the most beautiful places in America. The exhibition coincides with the publication of the book Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes: Transforming Nature into Art by Leelanau Press, cataloging the work shown in the exhibition. Edited by Linda Young, the book includes essays by Jerry Dennis and Kathleen Stocking and was designed by Angela Saxon.
The book is underwritten by Arts Tavern, Cherry Republic, and Cottage Book Shop. It will be available for purchase in the museum store.
The publication and exhibition celebrate the remarkable beauty of this unique northern Michigan gem. Drawn for decades to the majestic beauty and ever-changing landscape of the Sleeping Bear Dunes, artists have long been inspired to interpret the diversity and vastness of this region—towering dunes, clear waters, pristine forests, historic farmlands and meandering trails—all found within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s boundaries. Artists were invited to share their interpretations of this special environment by submitting entries for inclusion in both the exhibit and the publication.
The works included in the exhibition and publication were selected by Mary McNichols, professor of Art History at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and EW Ross, retired program director for Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck and former Dean of Continuing Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The Leelanau Press, a nonprofit publishing company, was established by Barbara and Frank Siepker and Suzanne Wilson. Run by a volunteer staff and working with local graphic designers and editors, its sole purpose is to publish books on Leelanau County subjects, writers and artists.
Reception and Program for Invited Artists and Guests, and Museum Members
There will be a preview reception for invited artists and guests, and museum members on Saturday October 12 at 7:00 PM at the Dennos Museum Center with a program at 8:00 PM in Milliken Auditorium. The program will include a reading of The Legend of Sleeping Bear by Mary Anne Rivers followed by a panel discussion, At the Intersection of Art & Nature, with photographer Greg Seman, Linda Young, former president of the Glen Arbor Art Association, and Tom Ulrich, Deputy Superintendent of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
A book signing for Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes: Transforming Nature into Art and Shine On will follow the program.
Educational Programming
The Dennos Museum Center’s Education department will be presenting a series of educational programs in association with these two exhibitions. For more information contact Jason Dake at 231-995-1029 or Jdake@nmc.edu.
Exhibitions at the Dennos Museum Center are supported in part by grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. Local support comes from the Robert T and Ruth Haidt Hughes Memorial Endowment Fund, TV 7&4 and WCMU Public Broadcasting.
