Nominate today, the Faculty Excellence Awards deadline is March 7
Has an NMC instructor made a difference in your life? Could dedicated, innovative and excellent be used to describe them? If you are looking for a way to recognize the impact an NMC teacher has had on your learning journey, please consider nominating them for the Imogene Wise excellence award.
This is the highest teaching honor awarded at NMC and nominations can only come from students. Nominations are due by March 7 and can be submitted here. (more…)
Bookstore reminder- Used books available through end of February
All used books for this semester at the bookstore will be sent back the first week in March. If you still need books for this semester, please plan to purchase them no later than the week of February 24. After that week only new books will be available for purchase.
Help improve career services by taking the Career Information Survey
The advising center and the student success center have teamed up to make our career services for students more robust. We now have career exploration and planning services through the advising office and career and employment preparation through our new career coach, Dana Laursen, in the student success center. Dana will be available to answer questions, review resumes and cover letters, assist with interview preparation, explore the job hunting process, and cheer you on when you land the job! Drop by or make an appointment to see how she can help. In the meantime, please take our survey about career planning and preparation. The survey only takes a few minutes and will help us plan and improve on our career services.

Courtney Sorrell joined NMC as Annual Giving Specialist on February 17, 2014. She can be reached at (231) 995-1030 or csorrell@nmc.edu.
Courtney grew up in Middletown, Ohio. She spent two summers abroad studying art history in Florence, Italy and graduated from Miami University (Ohio). After graduation, she spent several years in the western US, first living as a ski bum and outdoor enthusiast in Colorado and then Oregon. Courtney arrived in Northern Michigan in 2010 and enjoys snowshoeing with her border collie and boyfriend, cooking and volunteering.

Academic World Quest competition debuts
Join us for Academic WorldQuest! Watch as 9 teams of high school students compete in a world affairs quiz bowl-style competition on Thursday, February 27 from 2-6pm at Milliken Auditorium. TV 7&4’s Marc Schollett will MC and the winning team will move on to a national competition in Washington, D.C. this April. AWQ is part of the International Affairs Forum’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. Taster’s Guild tickets now on sale!
Tickets for the annual Tasters’ Guild Auction, set for Feb. 28, 2014, at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus are now on sale! This annual event features a strolling dinner of international cuisine prepared by Great Lakes Culinary Institute students and served at more than a dozen tasting tables throughout the waterfront campus.

Sip & Sketch at the Dennos Museum Center, March 13
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College, in partnership with NMC Art Club, presents Sip & Sketch on Thursday, March 13, 2014, from 6pm to 8pm. NMC students and the public are invited into the galleries for drawing, socializing, and learning about art. Coffee and refreshments will be available in the classroom area outside of the galleries. One of the many student clubs at NMC, the mission of NMC Art Club is to foster and promote the spirit of art and creativity on campus and in the community. (more…)

Passport Student Lecture Series continues on February 20 with focus on Japan
NMC Outreach Services’ Passport Student Lecture Series continues in February with international student Yuka Noguchi who will speak to attendees about Japan.

With the FY’15 departmental operational plan A3’s coming due on Monday, February 17th, you might appreciate some additional perspective on the strategic direction for NMC. President Nelson provided this important context to members of the Leadership Group during their January 31st planning alignment meeting. A video of Tim’s comments is now available. Also available are the Powerpoint slides from that talk and a memo that is referenced in the talk that summaries input from the Board regarding the Board Level Strategic Plan Goals. (more…)
