The Global Literature Reading Group committee has chosen books for the 2014-15 school year. We will be discussing Purple Hibiscus, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria) on November 21 and China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power, by NPR’s Rob Gifford on April 17. Copies of Purple Hibiscus are on order now and available for the subsidized price of $5.00. The NMC Soccer Club is competing in a local summer adult 8 vs. 8 soccer league on Sunday evenings at the Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer fields off Keystone road. The team is currently 2 wins and 1 loss after this Sunday night’s 5-2 win.
The NMC Soccer Club is for both recreational and competitive soccer players and a great way to meet other students.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the NMC Foundation’s 24-Hour Donor Challenge on Thursday and Friday. The outpouring of support from our community and especially our campus community helped make the event a success that exceeded expectations.
In just 24 hours, more than 120 donations, exceeding $20,000 were received. That money will go into the Foundation’s Annual Fund and support scholarships, programs, facilities and services here at NMC. I’m proud to have pledged $24 for each of the first 100 donations, and very happy that the great outpouring of support means that my full pledge will be honored. (more…)

Below, you will find a Budget Update from Planning and Budget Council that summarizes the progress we have made, since the beginning of the year, towards providing a balanced budget recommendation to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
As part of providing greater stability in future budgets, starting in the next fiscal year, we will recommend in the budget that is presented to the Board of Trustees for approval to award total compensation increases starting on January 1. Shifting to a January 1 annual compensation change will enable shared governance committees to have a more complete picture of the largest drivers in our budget, fall tuition revenue and healthcare costs. This allows us to align all total compensation increases together. The timing of the salary increase determination will be aligned with health benefits enrollment in October. NMC has launched a new scholarship web page and will no longer look at paper applications. It was previously stated, complete a FAFSA and you are eligible for scholarships. This is no longer the case. However, most scholarships are need based awards and would require a FAFSA to be eligible. (more…)

Have you ever wondered how close you are to meeting your medical deductible? Or how much you have used of your flexible spending account? How about whether your provider has already submitted a bill for your visit and how much you will have to pay them? If you are an employee on NMC’s medical plans, you can check your deductibles, your out-of-pocket expenses, your medical claims, your flexible spending accounts, and your pharmacy claims online. You can request new cards online through your account and also search for providers in the network. Priority Health acts as our claims administrator, and they give you the ability to set up a Member Account for yourself and for each of your covered dependents to view this information. (more…)
