Kudos to Emily Magner

Emily Magner worked tirelessly this summer coordinating orientation for new students. Her welcoming and supportive attitude with incoming students puts them at ease, and I observed her doing this time and time again for countless students.

At opening conference Tim Nelson told about Emily taking care of a perspective student’s dog and watching his 11-year old son so that he could attend orientation. This gesture allowed this student to register for classes and begin his educational journey here at NMC. Emily is passionate about new students getting their needs met when first arriving on campus, and she works hard to instill those values in her student workers, and I know it spills over to others who are assisting our students.

I also saw Emily work very hard over the summer planning Pine Palooza, and want to thank her for such a successful and professional event that benefited our students and makes us all proud of our college and its resources.

Welcome Sarah Shimek to her new position

Sarah Shimek has joined NMC in the position of Employee Wellness Coordinator  on Sept 10, 2012. She can be reached at 995-1154 or sshimek@nmc.edu 

Shimek grew up in Leelanau County, and moved back after getting her degree in Public Health Education and Health Promotion at CMU. She was previously the Community Outreach Coordinator and Health Education Specialist for the Grand Traverse County Health Department. She ran track in college, and now is a Crossfit Level 1 certified trainer, and has completed several triathlons and road races, including the Bayshore Marathon.

Tech Help Desk now includes chat

The Technology Help Desk  https://my.nmc.edu/employees/ page has now expanded its support offerings to include chat.

If you just have a quick question, want to discuss something, or want to enter in a ticket with the Technology Help Desk, you can take advantage of the Chat offering, whenever, the green “Available” is present.

Once you click on “click here” (which is next to Available), you will have to enter your Issue, NMCID, and a description of your issue.  Then the request for Chat will go to a Help Desk Staff member to be answered.  Chat’s are responded to on a first come, first serve basis.

The Help Desk Staff will work with each user to solve their issue, transfer them to another department, or enter a ticket on their behalf.  If an issue requires more advanced troubleshooting, the Help Desk Staff also has the ability to view, upon request, a users machine.

In another week or so the chat option will be added to the https://my.nmc.edu/students/ page.

Brown Bag Student Lecture Series starts September 27

NMC students, faculty and staff are invited to a new brown bag student lecture series called “Passports.”

It is a chance to experience other cultures by hearing about the experiences of NMC students who have lived it.

The first in the Passports series will be held Thursday, September 27 from noon to 1 p.m. in Founders Hall 110.

Hear students talk about their experiences on their recent study abroad trip to Russia.

Outreach Services at NMC

Monday, September 17 begins a new chapter in the NMC story as the new office of Outreach Services opens its doors in service to our learners.

Outreach Services will encompass the following three components:

1. Military Services – Enhanced educational support for veterans, current military personnel and their families.
2. High School Services – Early, middle and concurrent college development, support and coordination. Commitment Scholarship Program direction.
3. International Services – Platform development, promotion and enhancement of global awareness at NMC including:

  • Student, faculty and staff study abroad opportunities
  • Globally themed events and activities
  • Visiting professorships
  • Collaborative projects with international partners

Ruth Ann Reynolds of Clare donated a 1958 Tripacer aircraft to NMC with the understanding that it will be sold to fund a scholarship in honor of her husband who passed away in July 2010.  Nine and Ten News was there when NMC went out to pick up the plane and had this report:

MPSERS Retirement Reform

If you are an active member of MPSERS, the state retirement system, you should have recently received notification from the Office of Retirement Services (ORS) either through your home mail, email, or both to let you know that you need to make an election on how you want your pension and/or retiree healthcare benefits handled going forward.  The online election period is 9/4/12 – 10/26/12.

To help prepare you to make this important decision affecting your future, we will be holding informational sessions in computer labs around campus over the next several weeks.  There will be a presentation on the changes going into effect, and we will walk you through the online help in the MPSERS website which is available to help you evaluate your election options.

If you have already set up your online miAccount with MPSERS, bring your log-in information and you can follow along during the presentation.  If time permits, I will be happy to answer any questions that I can, or I can show you to how you can get direct answers that affect your individual situation.  Online through miAccount is the only way you will be able to make your election.

Faculty and Staff: Making a Difference

NMC has conducted a campaign for scholarships and programs for nearly 30 years.  It began as an annual campaign through direct mail that kicked off each autumn.  An appeal letter is sent to approximately 14,000 people, including current donors, alumni, NMC faculty, staff, and retirees.  The purpose of NMC’s Campaign for Scholarships and Programs is to build a base of donor support that provides annual funding to offer enhanced programming and scholarship opportunities to students.

Through the generous support of people like you, the Annual Campaign has become one of the leading sources of funding for NMC scholarships.  Last year, faculty and staff contributions raised more than $34,000 which helped provide scholarships to more than 500 students and helped meet the need of student programs and services campus wide.

Be sure to watch for more exciting information to come as the Foundation and Resource Development move forward in preparation for the 2012-13 Annual Campaign.

Kudos to Linda Walter

Thank you, Linda Walter! Pharmacology was not offered prior to the start of the nursing program for the past few years. Students got wind that Jackson Community College and Ferris pharmacology programs could be taken before entry into NMC nursing programs to lessen the load first semester. They were signing on in greater numbers and we were losing enrollment in our pharmacology program. We decided to offer our pharmacology prior to the nursing program, with summer 2012 as the first time it was offered. Linda accepted the challenge to take on the class and get it rolling for the program. She weathered the Moodle changes and delivered a great class!

Kudos to Joelle Hannert

Kudos to Joelle Hannert has taken on many facets of the Library. This summer was a big push to weed books in the stacks, and it’s no simple task. Joelle pulled hundreds of books and removed them from the system! When asked to do a report from the SIRSI catalog system, she will have it to you within 24 hours! She not only is our cataloger, but also a fill-in Librarian, and always willing to take the time to listen if you are having problems with something in SIRSI, and usually will fix it. Joelle has been making learning at the center a lot easier!

United Way Workplace Wellness Challenge Underway

The United Way workplace wellness challenge began Monday, September 10th. However, YOU can sign up at anytime! Participants earn “miles” daily in several categories, including physical activity, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and community health.
  • Physical Health:  Record your minutes of physical activity on the WalkingWorks website.  The minutes will be converted to miles.
  • Healthy Behaviors:  Record your healthy lifestyle behaviors as miles on the WalkingWorks website (see chart).
  • Community  Health:  Workplace Campaign.  Your gift of time and treasure will be recorded by your Workplace Campaign Coordinator and will count toward the competition.  Hours of volunteer service will be recorded as well as campaign participation rate for your company as a whole, you can record your hours on our volunteer website,www.volunteernwmi.org.

Team Prize:  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will donate $3,000 to the United Way Community Fund in the name of the company recording the highest average wellness miles per participant over the course of the Challenge!

Visitors from China

We have the distinct opportunity to be one of the host institutions for AACC’s (American Association of Community Colleges) Fall 2012 Vocational Education Leadership Training (VELT). The entire program will host 20-25 presidents and vice presidents of Chinese vocational and technical institutions. The VELT program will be financed by the Chinese government with the support of the Chinese Ministry of Education and jointly run under the supervision of the AACC and the China Education Association for International Exchange.

We will be hosting 5-6 presidents or vice-presidents from October 28 – November 10. The focus of the VELT program is to:
1. Strengthen the leadership abilities and capabilities of Chinese college administrators
2. Provide strategies to develop and improve market-oriented curriculum design
3. Enhance teaching methods for Chinese vocational institutions
4. Develop strong relationships with local businesses.

Prior to coming to NMC, the VELT participants will be in a week-long orientation in Washington, DC.

In the next week, we will be creating the agenda and asking many of you to participate in our host responsibilities such as giving tours, making presentations related to programs and service areas, participating in cultural events, etc.
