Dear all,

Thank you for all of the hard work you have done during our initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of you, we have been able to reduce the spread of the virus, limit the disruption to learning and keep the business of the college going during this unprecedented time. While we are moving out of the immediate response phase, we recognize that there is still a lot of uncertainty as we look toward the future. Keeping in the spirit of the “4R’s” as articulated by President Nissley in his email here, this email sets out a short-term goal plan that sandwiches into our ‘normal’ performance management processes, and is intended to help focus and align the college in this period of rapid change to meet the need for quick, thoughtful action. Keeping goals simple and aligned, flexible and in constant view/discussion is critical during this period in which we can scarcely see how events will unfold beyond the end of the week, let alone through a semester or even a year. Given that, we are implementing a new and temporary approach to goal-setting as follows:

  • Everyone should set 3 goals that are geared toward a period of 100 days. This is looking through the summer to the end of July. These goals should represent a view of immediate priorities and be aligned with the 4Rs. They don’t have to be new goals, but they need to be the most relevant things to get done during this time.
  • Managers should create a Google doc (see link to template below) that includes each team member and gives space for 3 goals as shown in the linked template. This document should be open to and shared among your team and your direct manager.
  • Team members are to fill in their 3 goals and review with their manager.
  • This is intended to be a living, working document. These goals may change even during this 100 day period as other priorities emerge.
  • In early August we will communicate a decision whether to migrate goals back into SilkRoad or to extend this temporary process. That decision will depend upon the degree to which we perceive that our environment has stabilized at that time.

Managers please use this template as a model for your team. You can make a copy and then share that with your team and your supervisor.

These goals will serve as a basis for your discussions with your supervisor and for your work during this period. Please aim to have these goals in place by Friday, May 1.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Thank you for continuing to be flexible and focused as we work through these unprecedented and challenging times.
