TRAVERSE CITY — NMC singers, musicians and dancers will offer a performance for every taste between April 17 and 24 at venues around Traverse City.
- Friday, April 17 NMC Canticum Novum performance, plus sweets from Morsels Bakery and chocolates from Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates. 7:30 p.m., Kirkbride Hall. Tickets: mynorthtickets.com. Canticum Novum, or “new song,” is a small, mixed (SATB) choral ensemble with a focus on challenging and new choral repertoire directed by Jeffrey Cobb.
- Sunday, April 19 Fauré’s Requiem. NMC Choirs perform with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. 3 p.m. Corson Auditorium, Interlochen Arts Academy. Tickets: Contact the TSO, 947-7120.
- Sunday, April 19 NMC Jazz Bands performance. 7 p.m., Milliken Auditorium. Tickets $10/adults, $5/seniors 62 and older and children 12 and younger, and free for NMC students with ID. 995-1553 or buy online. Credit and non-credit students may participate in the Jazz Lab Band, and the Jazz Big Band. Interim Director is Chris Bickley.
- Wednesday, April 22 Steps and Stares, NMC dance performance. 7 p.m., Milliken Auditorium. Tickets are $8, call 995-1553 or buy online. Directed by Dorothy Eisenstein, the concert will feature two masquerade dances performed in celebration of Earth Day as well as multiple styles including modern dance, partner dance, improvisation, hip hop, belly dancing, and a special film/dance presentation in collaboration with the visual communications department.
- Friday, April 24 NMC Concert Band performance, “Bang.” The performance will feature the cannon sounds heard in the famous “1812 Overture” by Peter Tschaikovsky, as well as Jerry Bilik’s powerful, “American Civil War Fantasy.” The concert will include “An American Elegy,” Frank Ticheli’s hauntingly beautiful tribute to the Columbine High School tragedy of 1999, as well as lighter concert band fare. The concert features selections from “The Music Man” by Meredith Wilson, marches by John Philip Sousa and “Chorale and Shaker Dance,” a concert band standard by John P. Zdechlik. 7:30 p.m., Milliken Auditorium. Tickets $10/adults, $5/seniors 62 and older and children 12 and younger, and free for NMC students with ID. 995-1553 or buy online. The band includes college students playing alongside experienced amateur and professional musicians. Directed by Pat Brumbaugh.

These forums are brought to you by the Center for Instructional Excellence which supports student learning by encouraging faculty-driven initiatives, promoting development of faculty knowledge, and recognizing the achievement of excellence. Sweet Earth is an all inclusive Earth Day celebration for our dynamic Northern Michigan community. It is a means of communicating how to get involved with a multitude of environmental issues, both locally and globally, through a dialogue with music, art and interactive workshops.
Sweet Earth is a celebration filled with creative expression that plants the seed of environmental consciousness and provides the resources to help it grow. This free festival takes place on Saturday, April 18 from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in NMC’s Health and Science Building. (more…)

Betsy Coffia joined NMC as the Director of Alumni Relations on March 23, 2015. She can be reached at (231) 995-2825 or bcoffia@nmc.edu.
Betsy is a proud 2005 NMC graduate, and all three of her siblings also attended NMC. Betsy has been a northern Michigan resident since early childhood; some of her favorite memories are of riding her bike to Torch Lake to go swimming in the summertime. She holds a BSW from Ferris State University. Betsy is a former Michigan Press Association Award winning news editor, photographer and reporter for UpNorth Publications and Morningstar Publications. Betsy and her partner Brendan O’Donnel, a tall ship captain, are beginner beekeepers. Betsy enjoys long distance hiking, growing her own food and canoeing on the Manistee River.

NMC International Services and Service Learning presents their Passport Student Lecture Series for April with international student Abdalla Elhadad who will speak to attendees about Egypt. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 16 from 12:15 – 1:00 pm in Founders Hall, room 110. Guests are invited to bring lunch and/or coffee to enjoy while they listen.
The Passport Student Lecture Series is a chance to explore other cultures through the experiences of NMC international students who will give presentations about their home countries. During the month of April, the Student Life office, along with Residence Life, will be holding a Sexual Assault Awareness Week (S.A.A.W.). There will be events throughout the week focused on raising awareness around sexual misconduct, specifically on college campuses. This is the first year that NMC will be holding a week of events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This week will offer unique opportunities for students, faculty and staff.
