As you consider your individual and department professional development goals for FY14, the Professional Development Institute is one possible resource. Just launched, it offers a variety of workshops and courses in technology, teamwork, quality service/continuous improvement, and leadership. If you or someone on your team is interested in the Foundations of Leadership cohort, applications are due June 30.
Hopefully, you are finding the tools you need to prepare for and have end of year reviews and goal-setting conversations for FY14. All of the documents, worksheets, resources are can be found on the MyPDCA page.
Don’t forget, completed Annual Reviews for FY13 and Goals for FY14 are due June 30. Please send a copy of your Annual Review form to Human Resources.

By now you have probably noticed some changes on the nmc.edu homepage. Most notably is the new menu bar at the very top of the screen that stays there as you scroll down or move on to a new page.
You probably also noticed that the old LOGIN link no longer exists under the search bar on the homepage.
We didn’t get rid of it, or hide it. We moved it to the upper righthand corner of every page on that new menu bar. It’s the MyNMC link. No matter where you are on the web site, you’re only one click away from MyNMC and the ability to log into all of your favorite NMC utilities.
Some other changes on the homepage include quick links to apply to NMC and register for classes. The library site is now easier to find. programs and courses can now be found as the first link on the green menu bar under academics.
The pages for current or prospective students, the NMC Foundation, services for veterans and Board of Trustees materials are easier to find, too.
We also upgraded our maps, and added Google map functionality (both on your desktop or mobile devices.)
The Bookstore will be closed for inventory on June 26, 27, 28 and reopening on July 1st. (June 29 & 30 being the weekend)
Please make note of this for any bookstore purchases you plan to make!
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present a range of public programs in conjunction with the National Geographic exhibition, Birds of Paradise: Amazing Avian Evolution. All programs are free with museum admission ($10 adults, $5 children and museum members).
The programs are a partnership between the Museum and local bird organizations in support of Birds of Paradise. Saving Birds Thru Habitat, located in Leelanau County, will offer a series of “Sundays are for the Birds” programs for families and adults at the Dennos Museum Center. Wings of Wonder, located in Empire, will present “A Bird’s-Eye View: An Interactive Raptor Experience” featuring live birds on the 15th of July, August, and September, also at the Dennos.
“These programs represent the kind of partnership the Dennos Museum Center wants to make happen,” says Jason Dake, Curator of Education. “This is why the museum exists – to present engaging and educational programming for the community.”
“Our organization is delighted to partner with the Dennos on an exhibition centered on one of the most beautiful and fascinating avian families in the world. Partnering with other agencies and non-profit organizations helps us spread the word about the importance of bird conservation,” said Kay Charter, Executive Director of Saving Birds Thru Habitat.
“The WOW Ambassador Raptors and I invite our community to join us as we soar to new heights in education,” says Rebecca Lessard, Executive Director of locally operated Wings of Wonder. “It’s a real feather in the cap of the Dennos Museum to bring these fantastic programs to our area and we are thrilled to be appearing in such stellar company.”

FY13 is rapidly coming to a close. Please make sure that you have submitted and/or approved all sick and vacation time for you and your employees for FY13, which ends on June 30, 2013.
Since vacation time must be paid out to employees when they leave employment with the College, our auditors require us to show unused vacation time as a liability. If the vacation time has not been reported via web time entry or through Employee Absence Reports to the Payroll department by 6/30/13, this liability is greater than it should be and thus detrimental to NMC’s financial position.
Remember that you can check your leave balances online through Self-Service by checking Employee Menu, Leave Balances. If you have any questions about this or other benefits, you can contact Human Resources at 995-1362 or 995-1025.
Chris Regier joined NMC as a Construction Technology Instructor on Wednesday, June 12. Chris can be reached at 995-2777 or cregier@nmc.edu.
Chris is originally from Roscommon, Michigan and entered the Air Force as HVAC/R specialist after graduating High School. He served 24 years in the military holding various HVAC/R positions as a technician, supervisor, instructor and superintendent. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and Iraq in support of Operations Desert Storm and Shield, Iraqi Freedom, Provide Comfort and Restore Hope. On April 1st, 2013 he retired from the military and moved to Traverse City in late May. He and his wife Bonnie have two teenagers, Michael and Ashley. Chris enjoys fishing, hunting, camping and being outdoors in Northern Michigan. Finally being back in Northern Michigan, he remarked, “It’s great to be back home after being gone for so long.”

Nancy Durecki is always kind and courteous with all contact made by UC staff concerning facility requests. We frequently have short-notice issues, and Nancy handles all issues quickly and professionally. Recently she assisted with a University Center partner office carpet installation and the project went smoothly. The UC partner was very happy with the outcome. A BIG THANKS to all the staff and faculty who give of their time and energies to be present at and support New Student Orientation. We have implemented quite a few changes to the orientation process, all of which we believe are student-centered changes that will aid our students in getting off to a great start here at NMC. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility and understanding as we implement these changes, and for all you do on orientation days for our new students.

With warmer weather finally arriving in Northern Michigan, many will be looking forward to beach days, sailing and more. But before you jump into the water to cool off, you should be educated on a major risk that may be involved.
Drowning is a very real threat for those who indulge in a water activity. It can often go unnoticed and victims can go unattended because of improper education on the signs of drowning. Both for your safety and the safety of those around you, we recommend this article from Slate.com which details the facts and the myths about what happens when someone is in danger of drowning.
