Kudos to the Enrollment Services Team – Cathryn Claerhout, Cindy Deemer, Georgenia Hromada, Jason Smith, Jessica Johnson, Jessie Elliott, Judy Arnold, Judy Druskovich, Julie Hansen, Kaite Lemkie, Katie Malone, Kevin D’Alessandro, Kristi Hallett, Linda Berlin, Lindsay Reed, Lisa Wilmeth, Praju Nivargi, Rorie Kawula, Scott Herzberg, Shannon Friedgen, Sheila Rupp, Sue Newman and Travce Holka – During the past two months, the Enrollment Services Team (Admissions, Records & Registration, Student Financial Services) has done a phenomenal job phasing in the new “One Stop Shop”. They have been bravely smiling through getting new duties, computers, phones and offices. The team is displaying grit, patience, and perseverance while keeping a sense of humor and positive environment for students.
Kudos to Don Cunningham and Todd Haines – A huge thank you to Don, Todd, and the facilities workers for their assistance when the air conditioning went out at the University Center impacting the GVSU Physician Assistant Studies program! Their mid-term exam and practicum was scheduled and we were able to move the students into an area of the University Center that had working AC, which involved moving medical beds, tables, chairs and other equipment. They also helped advocate for our students to have a standalone air conditioning unit in the lab room and ITV room which we could not move. Thank you for your efforts in keeping a comfortable environment for our students to learn.

Kudos to Roy Bartle– I attended the teacher workshop at NMC this past week, and Roy went above and beyond in providing food for all of us teachers; breakfast was supposed to start at 7:30, but many of us were awake and needing coffee earlier than that; Roy made coffee and food available earlier each day, having coffee and fruit and breads available at 6:45!! He chatted with each of us and answered our many questions about the area, he bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable, he just did an amazing job and we are all so very thankful for his hospitality and hard work!!!
Kudos to Deb Patterson for her scheduling prowess and her ability to manage customer needs with manageability. There are a number of behind the scenes logistics that she has to consider for every event on campus. Deb has many customers on and off campus and she does a great job making everything work and most people reschedule for the next year! Thanks Deb for all of your hard work!
Kudos to Jeffrey Cobb, director of Canticum Novum, Peggy Johnson served as piano accompanist, and Mike Hunter assisted with percussion as they led this choir to a performance in Carnegie Hall, June 24, 2017. This choir performed in area churches and Milliken Auditorium with classical and contemporary compositions in a variety of languages. These NMC employees deserve kudos! Bravo!!
Kudos to Chef Bob Rodriquez and a group of students and area chefs once again worked with the Detroit Red Wings Hockey Organization while they held their Prospect Camp at Center Ice in Traverse City. Bob and his volunteer students worked with the Detroit Red Wings Dietician, Lisa McDowell, to create and prepare food that delivered maximum nutrition and fuel for the hockey players’ bodies. This event was highlighted by the cooking class put on at the GLCI for the players. Players rotated through 9 stations where they learned to prepare healthy foods using only 5 ingredients each. Way to go Chef Bob, once again sharing your skills and knowledge with others.
The contest will close on July 14th, but steps can be entered until July 21. We will announce the employee/teams with the highest steps after the 21st!

Dear Colleagues,
I have some good news to report from our state leaders today. Governor Snyder has signed the fiscal year 2018 budget which finalizes several important items for NMC.
This signing marks the end of the legislature’s annual budget process. The budget spends $16.6 billion on school, colleges and universities. It also includes final approval for NMC’s multi-million dollar 21st Century Innovation Center project, a slight 2% increase in our state funding formula allocation and a $1 million investment in the Michigan Transfer Network (MTN) to modernize the MTN website and increase accessibility to information about college and university credit transfers.
The inclusion of these priorities for NMC and community colleges statewide would not have been possible were it not for the leadership of our elected officials, and I would like to personally thank those leaders who represent us in Northern Michigan including Representative Inman, Senator Schmidt and Senator Booher.
In addition, I believe this budget shows the state’s commitment to community colleges and the work that we do every day preparing learners for success through a competency based, knowledge application furthering their pursuit of social and economic success. We are excited to move forward with the West Hall Innovation Center and we will continue to update you on the project.

TRAVERSE CITY — During its regular monthly meeting, the Board of Trustees for Northwestern Michigan College unanimously approved a balanced budget and set tuition rates and fees for the fall 2017 and spring/summer 2018 semesters.
General tuition rates for residents will not change for in-district students, leaving the rate at $103.70 per contact hour. The Board approved changes to the general fee, which supports technology and facility infrastructure upgrades and student activities. In-district students will now pay a total of $30.50 in fees per contact hour. The Board eliminated the student registration and application fee. NMC’s in-district tuition is the 13th lowest of the state’s community colleges and is 75 percent lower than the average public universities in Michigan.
“Northwestern Michigan College is committed to providing our learners with world class educational opportunities, while limiting barriers, including affordability,” said Timothy J. Nelson, president, Northwestern Michigan College. “We are proud of the work we have done to limit the financial impact on learners by remaining agile and responsive in a rapidly changing environment. We will have more work ahead of us, but are dedicated to keeping NMC as the top choice for our learners.”
College leaders have been working to make the institution more efficient and lower costs, including reducing 16 positions through restructuring in the last four years and offering a voluntary separation plan this year. Those efforts combined with support from donors, lawmakers and community members are helping the college achieve its goals.
For 2017-2018, NMC’s revenue will be 21 percent from state aid, 22 percent from local property tax, 52 percent from tuition and fees and four percent from other sources.
