Kudos

To Ann Swaney who supervised the library’s student workers (Joe Berry, Shauna Quick, Olha Narolska, Caroline Land and Priscilla Liang) on the huge task of separating our old microfiche and microfilm from their paper envelopes and plastic reels for recycling. That’s 1,000 pounds of plastic and chemicals that will not go into the landfill!

To Joe Berry for doing everything he could to restore the computer in the Milliken Auditorium light and sound booth right before a 7:00 p.m. event in Auditorium. We appreciate his dedication to customer service to go above and beyond at a time when other colleagues were unavailable.

To Paul Perry who responded quickly to have an exhaust fan problem corrected in the Biederman Building, which made a very pleasant air-quality difference.

To Charlene Lutes who overheard another student and myself talking about not having eaten all day and didn’t bring any food. She offered to treat us for lunch. I am so greatful!

Wellness, It’s A Choice

On Friday, January 27, the NMC Wellness Committee presented a session on how to make healthy changes to your lifestyle in 2012. The presentation by Joe Sanok was videotaped, so you can view it here:  http://www.screencast.com/t/0qfTEWYIU

One of the tools Joe Sanok suggests using to reach a goal is to make a commitment to a change in writing, include how you will measure it, and how you will reward yourself when you succeed!  Having a witness sign it makes it even a more binding pledge.  Remember, no goal is too small – just take the first step!

What is your 2012 goal? We want to know, and your answers will be used to inspire others and yourself.  All answers are anonymous. Joe shared the following link where we can put in writing a commitment to making a change in our lives.  We’d like to invite you to join us by answering this question at:

https://docs.google.com/a/nmc.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dFh3T0h1bWdIWHZLSFdKTV9EQWdtYUE6MQ#gid=0

Good luck with your goals for a healthier lifestyle in 2012.  Watch for more programs from the Wellness Committee coming soon!

Marcus Roberts Trio at the Dennos

Saturday, February 25, 2012 8:00 PM

Marcus Roberts’ highly innovative and original piano style reflects his passion for great music of every genre, from the masters of jazz and classical music to his mother’s gospel singing. Blind since the age of 5, the self-taught prodigy studied classical piano and later toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis.

The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style – a style that is strongly rhythmic, melodic, and filled with dynamic contrast. This trio has an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. The group was founded in 1995, and now more than 15 years later, they are known around the world for their signature trio style. Roberts’ vision of the jazz trio grew rapidly following the selection of drummer Jason Marsalis for the drum chair in 1994 (when Jason was just 17). Bassist Rodney Jordan joined the group a few years ago and his profound musical intelligence has already left its mark on the trio’s sound.

Daytime Instructor, Evening Musician?

Are you an instructor by day, and a musician by night? Would like to share your talents with your NMC colleagues? If so, please contact Jeffrey Cobb to be a part of our first NMC Faculty Coffee House – an opportunity for NMC faculty musicians to share their music in a relaxed environment. We hope to have enough interest to stage our first “Coffee House” on March 16.

Photographer Speaks on Women’s Demands for Justice

Photographer Paula Allen will give a lecture entitled “Against All Odds: Women Around the World Demand Justice” at 7 p.m. February 20 in Milliken Auditorium. Sponsored by the NMC Office of Student Life; admission is free.

Allen has been an ‘activist with a camera’ for more than two decades. She has concentrated on photographing women around the world in their courageous and often invisible confrontations with violence and oppression. Her lecture will include photographs from her travels documenting women’s determination to pursue freedom, truth and justice. Among her destinations:

  • A safe house in Kenya where girls escape female genital mutilation
  • A village in Kosovo in which only the women and children survived the war
  • The streets of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico where women march to demand investigations of the murders of young female factory workers
  • Asia, where ‘comfort women’ break decades of  silence by telling their stories of military sexual slavery by Japan during World War II

Allen’s appearance is part of V-Day Traverse City 2012, a collaboration by NMC Student Life, student groups and Third Level Crisis Center to bring awareness and attention to the issue of violence against women and girls. V-Day will culminate with an April 30 performance of The Vagina Monologues in Milliken Auditorium.

Judy Collins Coming to the Dennos in June

The Dennos Museum Center is pleased to announce that Judy Collins will perform at the museum on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 7:30 P.M. in Milliken Auditorium. All tickets are $30 plus fees.

Tickets will only be available for sale to museum members only through February 19, 2012. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on February 20, 2012. Tickets may be purchased on line at www.dennosmuseum.org or by calling the box office at 231-995-1553. The box office is open for walk up sales from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Wednesday – Saturday.

Non-members wishing to join the museum for early access for tickets may do so online or at by calling Erika Olsen, Membership Manager at the Dennos at 231-995-1573, or the box office during regular hours.

Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. At 13, Judy Collins made her public debut performing Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos but it was the music of such artists as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked Judy’s love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love with the guitar.

In 1961, Judy Collins released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22 and began a thirty-five year association with Jac Holzman and Elektra Records. She interpreted the songs of fellow artists – particularly the social poets of the time such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton.  Judy was instrumental in bringing other singer-songwriters to a wider audience including poet/musician Leonard Cohen – and musicians Joni Mitchell and Randy Newman.

Judy Collins is also noted for her rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” on her 1967 album, Wildflowers which has since been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Winning “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards was Judy’s version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical “A Little Night Music.”

Singing With The Choir

A choir made up of member of the NMC Grand Traverse Chorale and the NMC Chamber Singers, about 45, participated in a workshop with the Harlem Gospel Choir. During the workshop, the HGC talked to about their history, their approach, and their mission. We talked about musical singing styles – specifically gospel music. They taught us the number we performed with them,“O Happy Day,” in about 20 minutes.  It was a great experience for the choirs!

Be The Match marrow donor registry drive on campus February 8

Northern Michigan College students, faculty, and staff will  have a unique opportunity to become lifesavers on Wednesday, February 8, when the college is hosting a “Be The Match”  marrow donor registry drive from Noon to 6 p.m. in the lower level of West Hall on NMC’s campus. Staff  from Michigan Blood’s Marrow/Stem Cell program, which is affiliated with the Be The Match Registry of the  National Marrow Donor Program, will conduct the special donor registry drive.

Any person between the ages of 18 and 60 years old may be eligible to become a prospective marrow donor.  Donors will be asked to fill out a form for contact information, provide a brief health history, and then provide a
blood sample for tissue-typing, which is required for all prospective donors.  To encourage students to join the Registry at the Northern Michigan College drive, Michigan Blood will
waive the $25 fee that prospective donors normally are asked to pay to help cover the costs of tissue-type  testing.

“Donors between the ages of 18 and 44 are ten times more likely to be chosen as matches for patients who need  transplants,” said Kona Kenny, Be the Match representative at Michigan Blood. “These donors generally have
more active stem cells and their donations are more likely to be accepted by the patient’s body. We want to  educate young people about the need for marrow donors, and also provide special opportunities, such as this  event at Northern Michigan College, for them to join the Registry.”

Each year approximately 35,000 Americans are diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia or any of  60 other life-threatening diseases that potentially can be treated with marrow transplants. Of that number, about  10,000 become transplant candidates but only about half are able to receive the possibly lifesaving procedures – and fewer than 1,000 are likely to have a family member who can provide a close tissue-type match. The Be The  Match Registry helps meet the need for unrelated marrow donors by providing an international database of  prospective donors.
