Stephanie D. Davis Appointed ACRL Chapter Representative

The MLA Board of Directors appointed Stephanie D. Davis, Library Instruction Coordinator, Northwestern Michigan College, to serve as ACRL Representative for a one-year term from June 1, 2012 – May 31, 2013, at their February 10, 2012 meeting. Scott Garrison, Associate Dean for Public Services and Technology, Western Michigan University will serve as Chapter Representative-Elect for a two-year term from June 1, 2012 – May 31, 2014.

Stephanie’s work experience, education and involvement in MLA qualify her to serve as the ACRL chapter representative. As a seasoned academic librarian, she understands the need for MLA’s affiliation with ACRL as a means of strengthening the services MLA provides its membership. ACRL represents the interests of the academic library community nationally and a strong connection between MLA and ACRL offers the most effective means for helping academic librarians stay up-to-date on national issues. She is ready to fulfill the obligation to serve as a bridge between MLA and ACRL to improve communication, providing membership with information about relevant national issues as well as opportunities for service and participation in ACRL. Keeping ACRL informed about the activities and needs of MLA’s academic community would be an essential function of this role as well.

She also understands the requirements for membership in both organizations and the need for attendance at the ALA Midwinter and Annual meetings. She is knowledgeable of both MLA and ARCL and can successfully complete the duties of writing meeting reports and presenting information from the ACRL meetings to the MLA membership and board. She is of aware of the need to advocate for MLA at ACRL and to act as ambassador between the two groups on behalf of MLA’s academic membership. She is comfortable and experienced with the liaison role and welcomes the chance to serve MLA’s academic membership, bolstering the role of MLA in the academic library community.

Tab Benoit performs at the Dennos

Saturday, March 17, 2012   8:00 PM
Born and raised on the Louisiana bayou, this self-proclaimed “new kid from    the old school” has been the standard bearer for a new generation of Cajun blues musicians – a traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, grafting elements of rock and soul to the indigenous sounds of the bayou.

With the purchase of a ticket to this performance, concert goers are invited to visit the museum’s galleries one hour before the concert and attend a post-concert reception with the performers.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door, $22 for Museum Members. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Museum Box office at 231-995-1553 or online at www.dennosmuseum.org.

Free Screening of “Banished: American Ethnic Cleansing”

The Dennos is proud to host a free screening of the documentary “Banished: American Ethnic Cleansing” on March 18, 2012 at 2:00pm in conjunction with the exhibition We Don’t Want Them.

A hundred years ago, in communities across the U.S., white residents forced thousands of black families to flee their homes. Even a century later, these towns remain almost entirely white. Banished tells the story of three of these communities and their black descendants, who return to learn their shocking histories.

For more information on the Museum and exhibition, go to www.dennosmuseum.org or call 231-995-1055.

“We Don’t Want Them”

The Dennos Museum Center, in collaboration with the Traverse Area District Library and Interlochen Center for the Arts has been selected to serve as a community host for the Great Michigan Read traveling exhibit, We Don’t Want Them, during the month of March.  We Don’t Want Them will be on exhibit at the Dennos Museum Center March 11-18, 2012.

Focusing on race and housing in metropolitan Detroit, We Don’t Want Them examines the realities African Americans faced from 1900 to the present. A prominent feature of the exhibit is the Ossian Sweet trials which is documented in this year’s Great Michigan Read selection, “Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age” by Kevin Boyle. “Arc of Justice” is the true story of Dr. Ossian Sweet, an African American physician, and the events that followed after he purchased a home in an all-white Detroit neighborhood in 1925. Through reproductions of historic documents and photographs, viewers of We Don’t Want Them will learn about the causes and effects of residential segregation.

Take a survey. Win an Amazon gift card.

From February 29–March 31, Northwestern Michigan College is conducting an online survey about what you watch on TV, what you listen to on the radio, what you read in print or online, and the ways you prefer to be contacted with new information. The survey instructions say that it takes 15-20 minutes to complete, but smart people like you will probably finish it in 10 minutes or so. Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a $150 Amazon.com gift card. Not bad for 10 minutes of work, right?

So what is NMC going to do with the information?
Well, we’re not going to share it with other colleges or businesses or anybody else. So you don’t have to worry about filling out this survey and getting a bunch of junk mail or e-mails because of it. What we are going to use it for is to do a better job of reaching people like you. It will help us learn more about what you watch and where you hang out and if you’d rather receive e-mails or texts or stuff in the mail.

How many times can I take the survey?
You can take it as many times as you want, but the survey’s pretty smart, so no matter how many times you take it, you’re only going to be entered to win the gift card once.

What if part of the survey doesn’t apply to me?
You don’t have to answer every question, but you do have to make it to the end of the survey to be entered to win. So if there is a question that doesn’t apply to you, you can just move on to the next one.

Where do I go to take the survey?
Just follow this link and use michigan as the password. It’s just that easy.

So thanks in advance for taking the survey, and good luck on winning the gift card!
