For the third year, NMC is offering an exciting foreign study and cultural exchange opportunity with US-Brazil Connect (USBC). Students (Fellows) will travel to beautiful Brazil in the summer of 2015, where they will assist in teaching English skills to high school students, take part in enriching travel excursions and educational activities, make life-long friends and invaluable cross-cultural connections, and experience one of the most gracious and vibrant societies in modern Latin America. TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College is offering a fun and unique way to give back to the community while getting an up-close look at some of the most exciting new technology available on campus
Saturday Nov. 8, business communications students will host an Exploration Day at NMC’s Aero Park Laboratory building from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. to benefit the NMC Food for Thought “Fill the Pantries: Food Drive Challenge.”
Community members of all ages are invited to explore and play with some of the latest equipment from NMC programs including a 3D printer, unmanned aerial vehicles, flight simulators, robots, remotely operated submarine and more!
Suggested admission is 10 non-perishable food items or $5 per person. Food and funds collected will help fill shelves at 51 area food pantries.
The NMC Food for Thought “Fill the Pantries: Food Drive Challenge” is a semester long service learning project that pairs NMC professional communications students and the Northwest Food Coalition. In 2013, with the help of the community, the challenge brought in more than 25,000 items to battle food insecurity. Food will be delivered to the pantries in time for Thanksgiving.

This presentation will be led by Jimmie Briggs, an Athena Fellow, Barnard Medal of Distinction recipient, and award-winning journalist and educator. It will take place Wednesday, November 19, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium. The event is free to students and $15 for community members. Tickets can be purchased at the Dennos Museum Box Office.

NMC International Services and Service Learning presents their Passport Student Lecture Series for November with international students Sichong Yan (on left side of photo) and He Sen Cai (on right) who will speak to attendees about China.The lecture will take place on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 12:15 – 1:00 pm in Founders Hall, room 110. Guests are invited to bring lunch and/or coffee to enjoy while they listen.
The Passport Student Lecture Series is a chance to explore other cultures through the experiences of NMC international students who will give presentations about their home countries. Information during their lectures can include culture, food, fashion, recreation, religion, gender issues, politics, current events, etc.

The NMC Rowing Club participated in the Leelanau Chase, their first official timed race. The Hawk Owls team of Brian Kindt, Pierce Thomas, Kim Kelderhouse, Noelle Sieloff and the cox Micah Thoreson was timed at 11:38 for 2.5K. In addition, the club assisted the Lake Leelanau Rowing club with parking and event timing for the regatta that had over 400 downstate high school rowers. It was a great opportunity for the NMC Rowing Club to gauge their progression after only five training sessions together. (more…)

The Hawk Owls fell 2-1 to Saginaw Valley State University Soccer Club, despite dominating the second half. Going down 2-0 early in the match, NMC took control of the match and scored on a free kick to pull within 1 goal. NMC then put shot after shot on goal, twice hitting the cross bar and numerous others just missing wide or over the top. In the end, NMC could not score and SVSU held on for the win.
Next Saturday, NMC Soccer Club plays their last match of the fall season, tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. vs Cornerstone JV at the Traverse City Coast Guard Fields. (more…)

As part of The Big Draw – Grand Traverse, the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College presents the exhibition, It’s Our World: Artists Inspired by Children’s Visions of the Future, November 1, 2014 – January 4, 2015. The exhibition features five local artists–Dewey Blocksma, Nancy Crisp, Nancy Nash, Joyce Petrakovitz, and Glenn Wolff–inspired by a child’s artwork. Each artist chose one or more drawings created by a young visitor during Big Draw Day on October 4, to incorporate and recreate in the medium of their choice. Children ages 4-12 created drawings in response to questions about keeping the Earth clean as part of this year’s Big Draw theme, It’s Our World. The exhibition will feature the artists’ interpretations, the original drawings from the children, and a digital slideshow of drawings and events that took place as part of The Big Draw–Grand Traverse.
