There are over 40 courses at NMC where instructors use open educational resources (free and low-cost textbooks) which has saved students an estimated $230,000 this semester alone and almost $3 million since 2015. The Center for Instructional Excellence and the Professional Development Institute have planned a full day of programming for NMC Next: Unlock your Full Potential, NMC’s 7th annual October Conference. Thanks to their coordination efforts, employees at NMC have an opportunity to invest in their personal growth so that we can continue to implement the college’s mission. This event wouldn’t be possible without their efforts as well as the contributions of each presenter — the college appreciates your willingness to share your insights, processes and new technologies available to us so that we can better serve our learners.
October Conference kicks off at 8 a.m. tomorrow in the Milliken Auditorium with light refreshments, a welcome and a keynote address. Kudos to the GLCI team for keeping the Detroit Red Wings fueled throughout their training camp. The Performance Dietitian for the team was so impressed with the service that GLCI provided that she personally reached out to President Nick Nissley to share her appreciation.

Democracy in a Politically Polarized America: How Can We Find Common Ground? will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20 in the Osterlin Building. NMC’s Enrollment Services has helped more than 300 adults over the age of 25 return to NMC to finish their degree or start for the first time through the Michigan Reconnect program.
Michigan Reconnect provides free in-district tuition and reduced out-of-district tuition for adults who are 25 years or older and don’t have a college degree or GED.

Kudos to Director of Nursing Tami Livengood and Vice President for Educational Services Stephen Siciliano for their work planning a bachelor’s of nursing degree pathway. Following passage of enabling legislation in July, NMC plans to apply for a $2 million state grant to administer a partnership with one or more four-year universities that would allow students to complete their BSN on NMC’s campus.

Congratulations to the Great Lakes Culinary Institute for a successful summer of Cafe’ Lobdell’s. The Great Lakes Culinary Institute recently received a full seven-year accreditation and “exemplary status” from the American Culinary Federation.
This is the last week that Cafe’ Lobdell’s will be open for the season; don’t miss your chance to grab a tasty pastry or handcrafted drink made by our culinary students. Cafe Lobdell’s is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7:30–11:30 a.m. Reservations are not needed.

This week’s Hawk Owl Helpers and Heroes are the faculty and staff in NMC’s Marine Technology program, who have deployed three research buoys so that they can collect data from different sections of Lake Michigan including East Bay that has not previously ever had any measurements taken.
Collecting this data provides students with experiential learning opportunities, actively engaging them through relevant and ongoing experience, while doing the important work of monitoring the Great Lakes.
NMC is the only school in the country that offers a Bachelor’s in Marine Technology, and graduates have a 100% employment rate in the marine industry.

This week’s Hawk Owl Helper and Heroes are the organizers of the Juneteenth Celebration which will be held at the NMC Campus in the courtyard area between East Hall and the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center on Sunday, June 19 from 1–5 p.m.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Last year, Congress designated it as a federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.

Jim Bensley and International Services have brought back the study abroad program for the first time since the pandemic began. Fifty students from multiple academic areas are traveling to the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Colombia as part of this year’s program. The study abroad program aligns with strategic goals of future-focused education and institutional distinction and sustainability by offering innovative instructional delivery models and relevant, hands-on educational experiences to empower global learners for the future and expanding global connections for our learners and communities. NMC is committed to providing experiential learning for our students and our study abroad program gives students the opportunity to gain real world experience while developing cross-cultural awareness and learning new perspectives.
