Kay was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in northern Michigan.  She has traveled throughout the world and lived in many places in the United States.  Proudly, Kay calls Traverse City her home having lived and raised her family here.  Kay has two daughters, Meg Bye who is an artist living and running her own business in Seattle, and Cora Bye, who just completed her Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine living and working in the Lombard, Illinois area.  Both daughters were married in the last year so Kay is proud to have two new son-in-laws, Matt and Garen.  (more…)

Lindsey was born and raised in Traverse City and attended both NMC and Ferris State University through the University Center where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.  She lived for a short period of time in Germany, where her husband is originally from, after earning her degree before coming back to the Traverse area.  Her previous work experience includes working as an accounting assistant in downtown TC and working as a deputy treasurer for Leelanau County.  Her hobbies include reading, learning, outdoor activities, traveling and practicing her German.  She is also a member of Mensa International. Michelle was born and raised just south of Detroit, she, husband Dan, and daughter Jessica moved to the area about 12 years ago. Michelle has several years of cleaning experience and ran her own business for many of them. She enjoys kayaking, gardening and spending time with her family. Jason was born and raised in Southern Michigan, where he met his wife, Samantha. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Spring Arbor University, Jason continued in the field of education by earning Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Jason has worked predominantly in higher education spending multiple years working in Admissions and Advising, as well as serving in Residence life and Student life.  Jason enjoys all things sports, outdoors, and traveling.   (more…)

Carol is joining the distinguished full time faculty after two years as an adjunct instructor in the Associate Degree in Nursing program, teaching first year, first semester nursing students, in the classroom, nursing skills lab and as a clinical instructor. Born and raised in metro Detroit, she received her Bachelor in Nursing from what is now University of Detroit-Mercy and her Masters in Nursing (Pediatric Oncology) from Emory University. The first part of her Nursing career was spent caring for children with cancer at Mott Children’s Hospital at U. of M. During the second part of Carol’s nursing journey, she lived in TC and then back in Detroit for a while working in patient/family education, nursing education, senior and women’s health and hospice/pain management. She says that all through her nursing career, teaching has been such a critical and rewarding role. When not working she enjoys being out in nature (the more trees, critters and birds, the better!) and also enjoys art, photography, fast cars and fast hockey ( go Detroit!)  (more…)

Kim was born and raised in Onekama Michigan and returned to Frankfort to set up her home after college. She has been with her husband since they were 14 years old and has 2 boys who are 9 and 11. Kim got her Associates in Nursing from Kalamazoo Valley Community College followed by a Bachelors in the Science of Nursing from Grand Valley State University through the University Center here at NMC. Kim continued with her Masters after ten years of working and raising a family from Walden University. She has 18 years of Maternity experience and loves to teach anything and everything. She has been an adjunct for the college for about 10 years for the Maternal-Child clinical rotation and currently works as the Maternity Educator at Munson Medical Center and a floor nurse (in her spare time). When not teaching, Kim loves to flower garden, scrapbook, camp, relax at the beach, ski with her family of snowboarders, and watch her boys play sports. Kim is very excited about the opportunity to be the Lead Faculty for Advanced Maternal Child here at NMC. It is truly a dream come true. (more…)

David was born and raised in Traverse City, before he enlisted in the United States Air Force to work on state-of-the-art Airborne computer systems. After serving in the Air Force, he moved back to Traverse City with his wife, Ann, whom he met while stationed in Oklahoma City, and their oldest child. Following his passion, he enrolled at NMC as a student in 2002, where he earned an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems, and a certificate for Network Administration. He continued his education at Ferris State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems, graduating with High Honors. He owned and operated his own computer repair business for several years before closing up shop. He continued in the IT field, where he worked in two different school districts as Tier 2/3 support. In his spare time David enjoys spending time with his and Ann’s three wonderful children, computer programming, reading and designing/building hand-built furniture. (more…)

Joe grew up on a farm in the Leelanau and began his college experience at NMC in 1982 where he received his private pilot license along with an array of coursework. Finishing the B.S. in sociology and psychology at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant and the M.A. in Clinical Psychology at the Center for Studies in Detroit. He went on for advanced training with the American College of Forensic Examiners and the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara.  Joe served a two year appointment (Assistant Professor) at Central Michigan University and a fourteen year appointment (Affiliate Professor) at Grand Valley State University where he served as Faculty Director of the Ghana Honors Service Learning Program focused upon the problem of trafficking in Ghana West, Africa. Joe is co-founder and president of International Sustainability Health Education and Water (ISHEW) registered in both Allendale, Michigan and Winneba, Ghana. Joe and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Traverse City with their Springer Spaniel, Shubby and cat, Larry. Together they cherish family,  friends, music, traveling and outdoor pursuits. (more…)

Welcome to NMC, Mac!

Norman Beeker goes by the nickname of Mac and was born in Detroit.  He attended Michigan State University as an undergraduate, worked in public broadcasting, completed a Master’s degree at Miami University and transitioned into non-profit development work.  He and his wife have lived in Ohio, Belgium and Italy before moving to Traverse City in 2003.  Changes in the health of his parents led Mac to learn more about nursing which led him to the ADN program at NMC and then work as a Patient Care Coordinator at Munson Medical Center.  He went on to complete a MSN in nursing education at Gonzaga University with student teaching work precepted by Jo Hendrix here at NMC.  His wife is Mary Beeker who works in the Osterlin Library and they live in the Slabtown neighborhood in Traverse City.  Outside of work Mac enjoys gardening, fly fishing and is a member of Sam’s Army, the supporters of the US national soccer team.  (more…)

Keith Weber has joined our CIT Developer Program as a full time instructor. He was born in southern California, spent his early years in the high desert and teen years in the city of Los Angeles. He raised a family in Orange County, near Disneyland, and most recently was a resident of Long Beach. Keith built a successful business over the course of twenty-three years, installing and supporting some of the first small business networks and ERP systems, as well as writing custom software and providing business consulting services. He has been involved with various organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Y-Indian Guides/Princesses, the Independent Computer Consultants Association, and School on Wheels. Keith has five adult children. He holds an AA and a BA in Economics, as well as a MS in Information Technology from California State University, Fullerton. He is passionate about education and the mission of community colleges. (more…)

Rachel Johansen-WilczewskiRachel Johansen- Wilczewski joined NMC as a Sociology Instructor on August 17, 2015. She can be reached at (231) 995-1295 or rjohansen-wilczewski@nmc.edu.

Rachel was born and raised in Greenville, MI, where she met her husband Steve. After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology at Aquinas College, Rachel continued her studies by attending graduate school at Michigan State University. In May of 2015 she received her PhD in Sociology with a specialization in Gender, Justice, and Environmental Change. Rachel’s dissertation research focused on the social/neighborhood impacts of urban greenspace revitalization in Flint, Michigan. While pursuing her degree, Rachel also taught sociology courses as an adjunct instructor at Aquinas College and Montcalm Community College. Rachel enjoys cooking, yoga, camping and canoeing, antiquing/garage sales, reading novels, making jewelry, and her and Steve’s two cats, Magnus and Odin. (more…)
