Kudos to CJ Schneider and Marcus Bennett for keeping the Fitness Center in North Hall staffed and open for longer hours for NMC students and employees. The Fitness Center is a great way to reduce stress and stay healthy physically and mentally.
Kudos to Brady Corcoran, David Chown, Patrick Niemisto & the rest of the Audio Tech students, faculty and staff for their vibrant presence on our campus and in our community! Watching Audio tech put on shows, bring performers to campus, connect with the community and create a safe space for students who are passionate about producing/performing music is experiential learning at its finest. We are so lucky to have this amazing team on our main campus, and to experience the talent that the faculty bring and that they share with our students. Sound Bytes, Great Lakes Folk Festival, Talent Show, Gala to Give, Earth Day, Pride Carnival and more—you guys are here for your college community and we appreciate everything you do! Bravo!
Kudos to Katie Sommer-Ford & Lisa Baldyga! With more than 75 employers and nearly 200 student and community and student job seekers, the 17th annual NMC Career & Employment fair was a huge success. Katie Sommer-Ford planned, organized, and executed this event that engaged business and community partners from around the region. Employers have given incredibly positive feedback saying, “this was the best fair yet for student engagement.” Several faculty from our academic areas were instrumental in getting students to the fair and partnered with businesses. Kudos also to Lisa Baldyga, NMC’s employment readiness specialist, who gave multiple class presentations, tabled in the TJNIC leading up to the fair to offer resources and preparation for students, and met one-on-one to review resumes. This was an incredible collaborative effort with strong benefits for our students, community and regional partners.
Kudos to Gail Kurowski, Jeremy Heinlein, Carly McCall, Tracy Welch & Landon DeHeer! Thank you to those that volunteered to help us the day of the Career Fair with setting up and running the event. Your efforts and the energy you bring to the room makes our attendees and employers feel welcome and have a positive experience. We appreciate that you took time out of your busy day to come help us!
Kudos to Alex Bloye, Nick Nissley & Troy Kierczynski for their recent funding approval from the State of Michigan. Kudos especially to the behind the scenes work to educate our representatives about NMC’s Aviation program. Congratulations!
Kudos to Elizabeth Sonnabend for working closely with 20Fathoms’ staff to create a vital learning experience for anyone wanting to launch a new business. Business Essentials will run this April-June. It is a 9-week program to help individuals launch their business. Designed especially for tech-based businesses, participants will attend weekly virtual classes, meet experts and mentors, access valuable resources, learn alongside peers and attend optional in-person networking events. This course is hosted by 20Fathoms in partnership with Northwestern Michigan College and with support from Hagerty.

Here are some troubleshooting tips and an FAQ to help you complete your compliance training the first time.
Question: I can’t return to my training after opening the Michigan or Federal laws and have to start over. How do I get through the Title IX training?
Answer: When you open and review the Michigan or Federal laws, these will open in a separate window. Don’t close the window! Click the browser icon on the status bar at the bottom of your screen to see thumbnails of all open windows. Click the open training window and return to the training. This will prevent you from restarting your training.
Question: I can’t see the Michigan or Federal laws when I click the link(s). Why?
Answer 1: Select Michigan for your state. “Michigan” will appear on the top right “…Laws” on the right. Click on Michigan and the laws should appear in a separate window. When finished, click on your browser icon and return to the training window to continue the module. (Didn’t resolve the issue? Try A2 below.)
Answer 2: Check your address bar at the top of the screen to ensure a pop-up blocker isn’t preventing content to appear. To resolve this:
- Click on the top right to allow the pop-ups/ disable the popup blocker for this training. (or)
- Go into your settings and allow pop-ups for this training. (Remember to change this back after the training based on your security preference.).
Other Troubleshooting Tips:
If you are accessing training from a desktop or laptop computer:
-
- Update and restart your browser. If you have any pending updates, they may need to be completed to move forward with training.
- Clear your browser’s cookies and cache, which is typically located under your browser’s history settings.
- It is possible that device-specific browser extensions and/or pop-up blockers may be interfering with your training. Try accessing the training from another browser to rule out this possibility.
If you are accessing training from a mobile device:
-
- Our system is compatible with many mobile devices; however, some users may have personal configurations that prevent certain courses from loading. Additionally, some custom and policy courses are best displayed on a computer. If you are experiencing difficulty loading our training on a personal device, try accessing the courses through a laptop or desktop computer.
If these troubleshooting tips do not correct the issue, please share the following details:
-
- Which browser and version are you experiencing this issue on?
- Screenshot and description of where the user is stuck or having difficulty.
- Full course title and section of the issue.
- The number of users reporting these issues (an estimate is fine). Example users are extremely helpful as well!
- Device(s) experiencing this issue (desktop, laptop, mobile device).

Thank you for your patience and for completing your compliance training to maintain a safe and caring campus for our learners.

If there were ever an emergency on our campus related to safety, everyone who signed up for Code Red would be sent an immediate text to the phone number we have on file (i.e. shelter in place instructions). While the alert would also be sent to your email address, a text is the quickest way to get crucial information when every minute counts.
You may have signed up for text alerts when you were first hired, but please verify the information is still correct. Please access the text opt-in link and double check to see if your current cell phone number is accurate in our system.
If you have any questions about updating your information in self-service, please contact the NMC Technology Help Desk at (231) 995-3020.

Kudos to Ben Post, Dan Gentry, Paul Martin and Lisa Molmen! The Information Technology Services, Systems and LAN Management, and Educational Technology teams have worked together to develop the Moodle integration with Lumens. This was a large undertaking that has been in the works for about a year. The integration to Moodle allows Extended Education students the same access to the online learning classrooms in Moodle that credit students have. This enhances the delivery of joint offerings (NMC credit classes offered through Extended Education without the credit or need for the community member to apply to the college). A huge thank you to Ben Post, Dan Gentry, Paul Martin and Lisa Molmen!
Kudos to Sally Smarsty! Thank you to Sally, her team, and the students who coordinated the Gala to Give. Extended Education is honored and humbled by the generosity of these people and the community members who attended. They raised $5,000 in College for Kids scholarships that will impact many families this summer, making fun, educational, summer learning experiences available to more students who face financial challenges. A sincere and heartfelt thank you!
Kudos to Shelly Grant, Joy Goodchild and Elizabeth Sonnabend! Shelly Grant and Joy Goodchild led the development of a database query that pulls the program data necessary to meet the Pure Michigan Talent Connect requirements. The Michigan Training Connect (MiTC) is the state’s official eligible training provider list and this database will allow NMC to quickly add programs. Entry on this page allows Michigan Works! and other state agencies to pay for training at NMC. This provides the workforce development training necessary for the region’s economy. Without these listings, NMC would NOT be listed as a provider, reducing our visibility to the community. Currently listed programs include Aviation, Engineering, Welding, Nursing, eldercare, heavy equipment and many more. Elizabeth Sonnabend played two pivotal roles. She drove this action through the strategic plan. More importantly, she has added and troubleshot programs, has served as a liaison with the State of Michigan/Michigan Works! and has also showed others how to use the system. This was a true team effort to provide the data collection necessary to implement these new programs and maintain existing ones. Michigan Works! has mentioned NMC’s efforts many times as our programs help drive their success.
