To Shauna Quick who goes beyond the call of duty at the Library’s Service Desk. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to help those “scared looking” first time students learn the ropes of NMC. The Library staff feels very fortunate to have Shauna as an employee.

As my NMC retirement approaches May 31, I want to say “thank-you” to people…
- who gave me the opportunity to work for NMC
- who taught me more than I expected to learn
- who responded quickly to what I needed done
- who anticipated what I needed even before I did
- who volunteered for the NMC BBQ
- who made it fun to come to work!
My role as editor of Intercom has been one of my favorite responsibilities. It has given me the opportunity to be in contact with so many people and departments across campus, and have a glimpse of the breadth and depth of NMC.
Warm regards,
Martha Griggs

Once again this summer we have a number of international students, many of whom are flight training in Aviation. The majority are staying in the residence halls. Last year, some of the students used bikes to get around for transport, and this summer we’d like to make more bikes available. If you have a bike in good condition that you could donate or lend to Aviation, they would appreciate it. Contact Steve Ursell at sursell@nmc.edu if you can help out.

Magnum Hospitality will hold its eighth annual Missy Memorial Scholarship fundraiser on June 21 at all four of its restaurant locations.
The scholarship fund for NMC Great Lakes Culinary students was created in 2005 in memory of Missy Kamyszek, a manager at Magnum’s Red Mesa Grill in Boyne City. On her birthday, June 21, the Red Mesa Grills in both Boyne City and Traverse City, Pearl’s in Elk Rapids and Cafe Santé in Boyne City will feature some of Missy’s favorite menu items and dedicate sales of the popular “Missy Margarita” to the scholarship fund. In addition, both Boyne City locations will feature live entertainment and a silent auction will be held at the Boyne Red Mesa Grill.
Since inception, the scholarship has awarded $8,000 to eight second-year culinary students.
For more information contact any Magnum Hospitality restaurant.

We’re looking for insights, new understanding, lessons learned from successes and failures. Our planning process calls for an end-of-year review both at the department and individual levels. Many of us will be having meetings with supervisors to review our FY’12 work and discuss goals for next year which will ensure that we achieve our departmental and ultimately college-wide plans. We’ve asked Leadership Group to lead their departments in an end-of-year review of their departmental operational plan. As part of these reviews, ORPE is asking that you identify “lessons learned” over the prior year.
So what are lessons learned? They can be anything from a process insight to a better understanding of student needs to an insight about resources to additional feedback on the planning process. If you feel it’s noteworthy, send it in. I’d rather have too many than too few lessons learned to share!
This feedback will become input into Grasping the Situation for the next planning cycle which begins this summer as ORPE prepares for the Strategy Retreat. A form is available on the intranet to make sending in your lessons learned an easy process. You can send them in as individuals and/or as departments…just send them in! Please find the form here and send in your lessons learned by June 27. Questions? Contact Karen Ruedinger at 5-1032 or kruedinger@nmc.edu.
