The Center for Learning is now the Student Success Center
The Center of Learning has changed its name to the Student Success Center. While the testing center and computer lab will function in much the same way, it will be expanding it’s student support offerings to include workshops, success coaching, a referral/alert system, classroom visits, learning communities and more.

“Michigan Meetings and Events Magazine” is currently conducting their eighth annual Readers’ Choice “Best of Awards”. This year’s winners will be announced in the Summer 2013 Issue and will be recognized at their industry event at the Frederick Meijer Gardens in May. Traverse City properties and suppliers were well represented and won several of the “Best of Categories” over the past few years because you made your choices known. The Hagerty Center has won “Best Meeting & Event Venue, Outside Detroit Metro Area” for the past two years. Our Northwest Michigan Region has many outstanding properties and venues that should be recognized again in 2013. Recognition of our NMC operations, as well as any of the area properties/venues, enhances the image of Northwestern Michigan College and the entire Traverse City destination.
You may remember that the Dennos Museum Center won “Best Cultural Venue, Outside Detroit Metro Area” all three years that it was a category, unfortunately, that is not a category in this year’s awards.
In order to make our voices heard, we would like to encourage you to complete an online ballot to insure that the Traverse City area is once again well represented in 2013, so vote for the Hagerty Center. You can go to the link below to fill out your ballot for the 2013 Best of Industry Awards. A valid ballot must include at least ten completed categories of the 21 categories listed. There is a limit of one ballot per e-mail address and entries must be submitted by 5:00 PM Friday, January 18, 2013.

Submit your BBQ fund proposals — Deadline is January 25
NMC faculty and staff are invited to request funding support from the 2013 NMC Barbecue for an NMC special project.
Last year the BBQ awarded more than $48,000 for seven deserving projects.
Funding proposals are due by noon on Friday, Jan, 25, 2013, and the forms and more information are available here:
Do you want to choose your own reserved parking spot?
Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society chapter of NMC is raffling off a parking spot in the location of the winner’s choice for the Spring 2013 semester.
Tickets are only $1 for 1 ticket, $5 for 6, or $10 for 15. The proceeds will help fund the group’s trip to the Phi Theta Kappa Annual Convention in San Jose, California in early April.
Tickets can be purchased online at nmc.edu/hotspot or from students wearing a “Hot Spot” button.

NMC’s Engineering Club is conducting an online sale for staff, students, family, and friends. All products can be mixed to provide you the best possible experience. Ask about our specials on four or six variety packs of ice cream.

This online sale is to help raise funds for our trip so we can compete in the SAE Baja Competition in Bellingham, WA., May 16th – 19th , 2013. We will be traveling the farthest any club has in NMC history and we need your support.

Special reception and presentation with THEM: Images of Separation exhibit curator David Pilgrim
Attend a special reception and lecture with the curator of a new exhibit at the Dennos Museum Center, Thursday, January 17.
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition THEM: Images of Separation from January 13 to March 3, 2013. THEM: Images of Separation is a lead component of a larger initiative in Traverse City called Embrace the Dream, which involves numerous area cultural and educational institutions working in collaboration with the Traverse City Human Rights Commission. (The events surrounding this initiative can be found at www.dennosmuseum.org/tolerance.)
THEM: Images of Separation is a traveling exhibition from the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University. Curated by Ferris State University professor of Social Sciences Dr. David Pilgrim, it showcases items from popular culture used to stereotype different groups. The negative imagery — found on postcards, license plates, games, souvenirs and costumes — promoted stereotyping against such groups as Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and poor whites, as well as those who are “other” in terms of body type or sexual orientation.
The Jim Crow Museum is noted for its extensive collections of racist memorabilia against African Americans and the exhibition includes items demeaning to African-Americans, but that is only a part of the exhibition’s larger picture. “I’m hoping ‘THEM‘ shows discrimination and stereotyping is not just a black/white issue — it’s more pervasive than that,” says Dr. Pilgrim.
Pilgrim says, “For this show, we took our direction from Martin Luther King’s famous quote, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Through 35 separate framed pieces (some with multiple items, such as postcards); “THEM” tackles some of the most contentious, cultural hot-button issues: anti-Arab sentiment, Holocaust denial, “don’t ask, don’t tell” and immigration.
Dr. Pilgrim will speak at a special evening reception for the exhibition on Thursday, January 17 beginning at 5:30 PM that will feature a tasting menu of Soul Food favorites, with the lecture at 7 PM in the Milliken Auditorium of the Dennos Museum Center. The reception and lecture is open to the public free of charge, and is sponsored by DTE Energy, The Michigan Civil Rights Commission and NMC Student Life.

Writing and Reading Center
As you gear up for Spring, please remember the services the Writing and Reading Center can offer for you and your students:
- Feedback on Assignments: The best way to know if your assignments will be understood by your students is to first have Readers in the WRC look them over. We’d be happy to provide feedback on anything you are handing out.
- Library WRC Hours: We will be featuring a Reader in the Osterlin Library one night per week. More details to follow!
- Reading Specialist: Victoria Willson will be working in the WRC as our Reading Specialist. Often students who struggle are not comprehending their reading. Send them our way and we’ll help them with reading strategies.
- WRC Resources: We have bookmarks to give to students and a quick video presentation to show them about the WRC’s services, which can be easily included in your Moodle shell. If you want bookmarks, let me know and I’ll send them along. In addition, we have somefunny commercials made by previous Readers. Also, see our website for more instructor resources.
- Share Assignments: Please send copies of your assignments to us, so we can keep them in our files. This helps us immensely with students who forget to bring their guidelines with them.
- Phone Appointments: Students who are unable to make it to campus can schedule a point appointment. See the website for details.
- Classroom Visits: If you would like to schedule someone to come to your class to talk about the WRC or if you want to bring your classes to the WRC for a tour, simply email me and we’ll schedule a time.
- Requiring Visits: We’d be happy to accommodate your students, but if you are requiring a visit for a paper, please let me know, to assure we have the appointments available in the time you need.
- Unique Assignments: If you have anything specific you want us to be aware of, let us know. We can help you in any way!

THEM: Images of Separation, is a traveling exhibition showcasing items from popular culture used to stereotype different groups. The negative imagery–found on postcards, license plates, games, souvenirs and costumes–promoted stereotyping against such groups as Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and poor whites, as well as those who are “other” in terms of body type or sexual orientation.
This exhibit opens at the Dennos Museum Center on Sunday, January 13, and was inspired by the words of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere … Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” The goal is to use objects of intolerance to teach tolerance and offer opportunities for dialogue and action.

Kudos to Megan Ward who is an excellent and dedicated instructor. Ms. Ward was my instructor for ENG 111 for Fall 2012 and I was very impressed by her professionalism and subject matter knowledge. She did a great job of mixing interesting assignments with thorough and thoughtful feedback to create a very fluid and helpful learning environment despite the inherent difficulties this class presents by being conducted online.
