National Moment of Silence for Umpqua Community College on Oct. 8

Via the American Association of Community Colleges we extend this invitation to take part in a National Moment of Silence in honor of the victims of the shooting at Umpqua Community College. Here’s the invitation from Dr. Walter Bumphus, president and CEO at AACC:

Dear Community College Colleagues,

We ask that your college participate in a National Moment of Silence in honor of the victims of the shooting at Umpqua Community College. Please join us this Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. (PT)/2:00 p.m. (ET) in observing a moment of silence.

As a show of solidarity and support for our friends and colleagues who are working tirelessly to pick up the pieces on the UCC campus, please use the #IamUCC hashtag and share your support via social media. Please encourage your students, staff, and faculty to participate in these efforts and let’s show Umpqua that we all stand with them as they begin the process of healing their campus community. Global Literature Reading Group to meet

telexThe Global Literature Reading Group will meet on Friday, November 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the West Hall Conference Room. This semester’s book is Telex from Cuba, by Rachel Kushner. It chronicles the last days of the American ex-pats living in Cuba on the eve of Castro ‘s revolution in the 1950s. What’s Up World- Barriers to women’s education around the world: What can you do?

Come join fellow students for a living room-style discussion on a specific global hot topic each month.  This month’s discussion will be hosted in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa.  This program is student-led with discussion prompts as well as a short video clip or news feature as a lead in.  These events are designed to inform students, pique curiosity, build community and keep you in the know.  No prior knowledge on the topics is required or expected.  We will also provide snacks at each event so bring your friends and let’s start asking, “What’s Up World?” (more…)

Great Lakes ~ Great Chefs dinner Nov. 6

TRAVERSE CITY — Tickets are now on sale for the annual Great Lakes Great Chefs dinner benefitting NMC’s Great Lakes Culinary Institute.

The Nov. 6 evening begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails, champagne, and a raw bar on the Great Lakes Campus catwalk, then moves to Lobdell’s Teaching Restaurant at 7 p.m. for five amazing courses and a spectacular view. Guest chefs include GLCI alumni Chris Hoffman (Towne Plaza)  and Jim Morse (The Boathouse) as well as Joseph George (Lochenheath), Dan Flynn (Barrel Back Inn) and Jeff Butzow (Fish Lads).

Tickets are $95 per person and can be purchased online or by calling (231) 995-1021.

Proceeds from this event will be used to bring talented chefs and others from the culinary world to the Great Lakes Culinary Institute to teach and work side by side with students. The event is presented by the Great Lakes Culinary Institute and Superior Foods.

As part of NMC’s Global Awareness initiative we offer opportunities in the following areas for short-term (less than three week) opportunities abroad. Each option has different criteria and may be associated with different programs: Austria, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Russia and South Africa. Current students are also eligible to receive up to $1000 in Global Opportunities Scholarships. Some experiences require a $250 deposit by November 20, 2015. (more…)

NMC email signature option

email signatureNMC faculty, staff and students can now use one of two online templates (first option shown to the right, Hawk Owl variation also available) to quickly create an email signature with contact information, the NMC logo and links to NMC’s main social media channels. Email signatures are automatically added to outgoing email messages and to email message responses. To see and copy the email signature template, and to learn more about customizing it, click here.

Note that not everyone will be able to view your email signature depending on their email program and settings. The Public Relations department is not able to troubleshoot issues with email signatures. (more…)

NMC Soccer Club result

soccer ballThe NMC Soccer Club dropped a hard fought match on the road at Cornerstone University JV. After going down 1-0 mid way through the first half, Cornerstone scored two goals within 5 minutes of the half to pull ahead. Noah Withey made a number of great saves in goal and Ryan Haworth, Andrew Bump and Nick Armour played very well in the back line despite the goals.

The Hawk Owls next soccer match is this Saturday, October 10, 2:45 kick off against Ferris State University soccer club. Game is at Traverse City Coast Guard Soccer complex. (more…)

College Night planned for Oct. 13

The 2015 College Night, a MACRAO sanctioned event, is brought to you by the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District and Northwestern Michigan College. It will take place Tuesday, October 13 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Hagerty Center (715 East Front St . Traverse City.) High school students throughout the region have the opportunity to meet with representatives from more than 50 colleges, universities and military branches and learn about financial aid opportunities and scholarships.
