Have you ever wondered how close you are to meeting your medical deductible?  Or how much you have used of your flexible spending account?  How about whether your provider has already submitted a bill for your visit and how much you will have to pay them?  If you are an employee on NMC’s medical plans, you can check your deductibles, your out-of-pocket expenses, your medical claims, your flexible spending accounts, and your pharmacy claims online.  Priority Health acts as our claims administrator, and they give you the ability to set up a Member Account for yourself and for each of your covered dependents to view this information.

Do you cover children on your plan?  Through enhancements to Priority’s online accounts, you now have the ability to view claim information for minor dependents (up to age 18) with a single login.  Find out more about this feature at Priority Health Dependent Claims

If you do not currently have a Priority Health Member Account, you can  learn how to set up one here.  Be sure you have your medical card handy so you can enter your individual contract numbers while creating your account.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact HR at 995-1362 or 995-1025.

Save the date: 58th Annual NMC Barbecue is May 19, 2013

It’s almost that time of the year again! Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 19, 2013! The BBQ will run 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. and includes fun for the whole family!

The NMC Barbecue is one of northern Michigan’s most popular and enduring traditions. The annual event brings thousands of people to NMC’s main campus for an old-fashioned picnic and a chance to see their community college.

The late Gerald W. Oleson and his wife Frances, founders of Oleson’s Food Stores in Traverse City, started the annual fundraiser picnic in 1956. Oleson’s Food Stores continue to donate the food, and hundreds of volunteers turn out to make the event happen.

Buy your tickets today! Advance tickets are just $6 while day-of tickets are $8.

Click HERE to buy your tickets online and learn more about the BBQ! Or for more information, call (231) 995-1020.

Let’s all do the BBQ!

Small Works art sale at Dennos Museum Center

The Dennos Museum Center is offering art patrons an opportunity to purchase original works of art by talented artists in the region in the museum’s 5th annual Small Works art sale from May 2-5, 2013.

Artists are being invited to submit up to 10 works of art in any media with measurements no greater than 5” x 7” x 5”.  All art work will be priced at $50 or less. The size restrictions have changed this year to allow for more small pottery and sculptures.

The Small Works Sale has been organized to benefit artists and provide art patrons the opportunity to acquire works by artists in a price range accessible to many collectors.

There is no application fee or jury process for the sale.  If the work of art meets the size and price parameters it will be allowed in the sale.

The Museum’s goal for the sale is to provide artists with additional sales opportunities and encourage patrons to buy original art at an affordable price. This is the fifth year of the Small Works sale. Last year 110 artists brought in about 1,000 works to sell.  The sale was a great success with over $7,000 in gross sales.

The Small Works sale, open to the public, will begin with the sale and reception from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 2.  The sale will continue Friday, May 3rd and 4th from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday, May 9, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. There is no admission charge for the Small Works sale.

For additional information on the Small Works visit www.dennosmuseum.org or call the Dennos Museum Store 231-995-1587.

The Dennos Museum Center is open Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursday until 8 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members. For more information on the Museum and exhibition, go to www.dennosmuseum.org or call 231-995-1055. The Dennos Museum Center is located at 1410 College Dr., Traverse City, MI 49686, at the entrance to the campus of Northwestern Michigan College.

Campus Expression Policy

At their regular April meeting, the Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees approved a second reading of a new college “Campus Expression Policy.”

NMC has always been committed to the free and lawful exercise of expressive activity, and that commitment is unchanged by this policy.

The policy is intended to allow for the expression of free speech in a civil manner and forbids NMC from limiting public expression of ideas based on the content or source of the ideas being expressed.  This policy does not prevent public demonstration, protest, petition or similar activity.

The policy’s intent is to identify spaces for expressive activity, based upon the need to maintain an orderly and peaceful environment to ensure the mission and operation of the college.   The policy was developed by NMC with input from counsel, campus safety and local law enforcement, and drafted to be consistent with that of similar policies in effect at other higher education institutions.

The restrictions in the policy are set to prevent a person or persons from assembling in a manner that prevents or obstructs the free movement of persons around the campus, free and normal use of college buildings and facilities or impedes the normal activities of the college.

The full policy can be found at: https://www.nmc.edu/about/policies/board-staff/D-505.15.html

Benefits corner

It’s likely you will not be able to depend solely on Social Security and your retirement plan with NMC to deliver all the money you’ll need for retirement.  It may be up to you to supplement your retirement income, and as an NMC employee, you have an excellent opportunity to set aside money for your retirement by contributing to a 403(b) or 457(b) retirement plan.

Contributions are made with pre-tax income if you use one of the companies NMC partners with to offer payroll deduction.  As a result, these contributions are excluded from your current federal taxable income, which means you’ll pay less in income tax.  You also do not pay taxes on earnings from the investments in your retirement plan until you retire or withdraw them, which provides you the potential for faster growth.

If you are interested in learning more about starting a supplemental retirement plan through payroll pre-tax deduction, contact one of the following companies.  Once you set up an account, you simply complete a form so that we know what deduction to set up for you.  You have the flexibility to change your deduction amount whenever you feel it is needed and even to have retirement accounts with more than one of these companies.

Heather Somero is always there to help, always positive, and always encouraging to me as a new adjunct. She is also very professional.

Michelle Autry is always putting out friendly and helpful emails to bring all of us along with her into the eLearning part of our jobs. Michelle was very professional and helpful to get all of my Moodle problems resolved. She was also very patient with me as I muddled my way through Moodle.

A HUGE thank you to Cheri Garvin who organized a tremendous Professional Development Day for Support Staff and Tech/Para! All three segments were outstanding and a good time was had by all!

Susan Odgers has been a tireless member of the Compensation Systems Review Work Group. Additionally, she is the founder of the monthly best practices adjunct meetings at Cambria Suites, bringing people together to work on the development of an adjunct website. This is on top of her teaching for several schools, other jobs and all of the community boards she sits on.

There is still time to register for summer classes, payment due date is May 7

Important Notice to all NMC students for summer semester 2013

(THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR SUMMER!)

Payment due date for summer is May 7, 2013.

For information on how to make a payment or set up a payment plan, please go to: https://www.nmc.edu/financial-aid/payment-options.html

NMC may drop your enrollment in classes if you owe a balance after May 7, 2013. However, there are circumstances where, as a courtesy, we will not drop your classes. You must drop any classes that you do not plan to attend, otherwise, you will be responsible for payment of charges incurred and will receive a grade at the end of the semester.

There will be one auto-drop for non-payment, around May 10.    Please check and manage your account status and class schedule regularly, especially between now and the 100% refund dates listed on your class schedule for each course.  Always check your NMC email for notifications and e-bills.  There will be no paper bills.

You are responsible to manage your own enrollment (for example:  dropping classes you do not plan to attend/pay for).  Classes can only be dropped on NMC Self-Service or in person, not over the phone.  If there is a hold preventing a drop, contact us to lift the hold.  You will still have to drop the classes yourself.

Steps for summer:

  • If you have already received financial aid this year in fall and/or spring, check on Self-Service to see if you have financial aid left for summer.  Otherwise:
  • Pay by May 7, set up a payment plan and make payments on time, or apply for financial aid in time for NMC to receive your FAFSA by January 3 (it takes up to 2 weeks).
  • Drop classes you don’t plan to attend by the 100% refund date for each class printed on the student schedule.
  • Watch your NMC email and check your account and schedule after the auto-drop to make sure you know where you stand.
  • Pay your balances on time and/or make sure to follow the financial aid process to completion.
  • Attend your classes to completion, taking full advantage of all of the help available to succeed. (Withdrawal or non-attendance can result in loss of financial aid.  Contact Student Financial Services for information.)
