Kudos to the following individuals, groups and departments!NMC supported the College Access Network’s College Application Week during the week of November 4-8. Cheri Garvin and Jenny Hanrahan processed an extraordinary amount of applications. Admissions received new applications totaling 435 for the week! Some area high school’s entire senior class completed applications to attend NMC. This was in addition to preparing for the first spring orientation session, following up on high school dual enrollment applications, handling a large volume of incoming calls and questions, and taking care of day-to-day office operations while other staff members were away at professional development conferences. Cheri and Jenny’s efforts were outstanding and have allowed more students to be admitted to NMC!
Wednesday marked the 13th year for the joint NMC-TBA ISD GirlTech event. Almost 200, 10th grade girls from the five-county Grand Traverse Region participated in this day-long seminar which Elizabeth Stevens worked tirelessly to organize and execute. The event featured nine female professionals who work in nontraditional careers and was intended to inspire girls to explore these careers at TBA-ISD and NMC. Each year this event serves to not only inspire female students, but also to raise the profile of NMC as a center for innovative education for cutting edge careers. Elizabeth’s dedication to this event has planted a seed in the minds of these young girls to explore nontraditional careers and to begin their higher education at Northwestern Michigan College.
Kudos to, Outreach Services for a free breakfast and cake, along with a wonderful moving Veteran’s Day Celebration! It is so great to be able to personally thank our students, faculty and staff for their service.
Janet Lively and Ann Geht recently worked with English Language Arts teachers from the local area on college readiness and curriculum alignment efforts. Janet and Ann demonstrated strategies for teaching students how to use databases and for evaluating the credibility of sources they consider using in their academic work. This event was one of a three-part series of the Secondary Literacy Collaborative Series sponsored by the TBA-ISD.
Kudos to, Wayne Moody for an older vehicle was donated to the Auto Tech Department to be used for student instruction. The students did the work and renovation of the vehicle and then donated the car to one of NMC’s student veterans. It was a great show of teamwork and generosity. Thank you.
Phil Trowbridge has been a part of the UC for a long time. He is always polite and helpful. He does his work with a high degree of quality…it matters to him that the bathrooms are clean, sidewalks clear of snow and ice and so on. He treats the care of the UC as “his building”. He is nice to everyone who uses the building and tries to be helpful in any way he can be. His is one of the quiet giants at NMC.
