Here is an overview of the March 23, 2015 NMC Board of Trustees meeting:

The Student Government Association gave a presentation on the work they have done this year at the college as well as events they put on and trips they took.

Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Services, Chris Weber, gave the enrollment report stating that summer enrollment is currently down about 3%, however there are still six weeks till the summer semester begins and that the gap will close as the deadline gets closer.

Vice President for Finance and Administration, Vicki Cook, gave the financial report stating that there are no differences in revenue and a slight decrease in budget.

Vice President for Life long and Professional Learning, Marguerite Cotto, reported Compensation and Classification work is still working toward a June goal with 47 detail pieces being worked on.

Board member Kennard Weaver, reported that at the MCCA’s Board of Directors Spring Meeting a variety of topics were covered, mainly of which was Governor Synder’s plan to deal with MYPSERS over the next 30 years.

Board member Cheryl Follette, reported that the board’s Policy Committee had changes to the electronic communications consent agenda item.

Board member Cheryl Follete, reported that the decision from the Fellows Nomination Committee is to recommend Bruce Byl be appointed as the 2015 Fellow of NMC.

Board member Marilyn Dresser was absent from the meeting and her BBQ report was read by Board Chair, Doug Bishop. He encourages everyone to attend the BBQ on Sunday, May 17 to celebrate the community and NMC.

Board chair, Doug Bishop, presented the Foundation Report welcoming Paris Morse as Director of Development on March 3 and Betsy Coffia as Director of Alumni Relations starting on March 23. The selection processes are underway for Fellows, Outstanding Alumni, and Foundation Excellence awards.

The Legislative Issues Report from President Timothy J. Nelson stated that Community College Day will take place once again this spring.

Board chair, Doug Bishop, stated in his Board Chair Update that he is thankful to Kennard Weaver who covered for him last month. He also thanked Cheryl Follete and the Policy Committee for their hard work. He mentioned the annual Leadership Convention that is coming up, which he encourages the board members to attend.

In President Timothy J. Nelson’s report, he mentioned continued drawings for expansion of buildings on campus is taking place. He also stated that NMC has signed a consortium with Munson for Surgical Tech in Health Occupations. Nelson also reminded everyone of the Veterans Hiring Fair taking place the following day (March 24) which helps veterans land jobs in the community.

Board chair, Doug Bishop, spoke about the retreat the board took which discussed student housing at length highlighting a possible proposal for a property exchange of 3.5 acres from the city by the water treatment plant.

A presentation was made by Vicki Cook, Vice President for Finance and Administration concerning the possibility of contracting with EDUStaff, a third party contractor for supplemental and adjunct employees. They would assist in hiring and payroll service management, however NMC would still retain all hiring decisions, pay rate, compensation and benefits.

The Board of Trustees voted to approve the consent and action items.

After the review of follow-up requests, Cheryl Follete announced that she is resigning from her position on the Board of Trustees, effective immediately. President Timothy J. Nelson thanked Cheryl for her extensive time and expertise serving on the board. Board chair, Doug Bishop thanked Cheryl as well for her contributions to the board over her years as a member and explained to the board the process by which they will seek to appoint a new member. The board must select and appoint a new member to replace Cheryl within 30 days, otherwise the decision goes to the local intermediate school district. Bishop recommended Ross Childs, Kennard Weaver and Steven Rawlings as a search committee for the new member.
