Big Brothers Big Sisters Seeking Volunteer Mentors

Have you ever wanted a classroom of one? Consider being a Big Brother or Big Sister mentor to a child. There are no tests to administer, no assignments to grade – just a child waiting for a friend.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking volunteers for its community- and school-based mentoring programs. Men: you’re ESPECIALLY needed, as the boys on our waitlists for a mentor are ever-increasing.

In either program, volunteers are able to make an impact by spending a few hours of quality one-on-one time with a child each month. In the school-based program, volunteers visit with the child at school once each week during their lunch/recess break. Time spent together typically involves playing games, doing puzzles, reading, playing in the gym or on the playground, or eating lunch and chatting. The community-based program extends year-round and allows the volunteer the flexibility to meet with the child when convenient each month, outside the school grounds. Your best gift is your time and simply being yourself.

We work closely with our volunteers to match them with a child who will enjoy their time and talents and provide a friendship that is beneficial and rewarding.

Additionally, if you have any students whom you feel would make good Bigs, please encourage them to consider volunteering in one of our nearby school-based mentoring programs.

For more information about becoming a Big this school year, call 231-946-2447 ext. 202 or visit http://

History Channel series featuring footage from Water Studies Institute to air this weekend

The next episode of the History Channel series Great Lake Warriors, features footage provided by NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute of the Lauren Castle, a tugboat that sunk in West Grand Traverse Bay south of Sutton’s Bay on November 5, 1980.

While conducting hydrographic surveys of East and West Grand Traverse Bay in 2009, the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute discovered what they believed to be the Lauren Castle, resting upgright on the floor of West Grand Traverse Bay.  While initial attempts to conduct a video investigation of the Lauren Castle were unsuccessful, the Water Studies Institute returned in October, 2010 with a remotely operated vehicle to successfully capture video of the shipwreck.  Portions of that video air in this week’s episode.

Great Lake Warriors episode four, “Make or Break” premieres at 10 pm, Thursday, August 9, and re-airs:

  • 2 am, Friday, August 10
  • 9 am, Sunday, August 12
  • 3 pm, Thursday, August 16
UPDATE: The full episode is available online at http://www.history.com/shows/great-lake-warriors/videos#great-lake-warriors-make-or-break and will remain up until Friday morning, August 17.

Faculty asked to put textbooks on reserve at the library

In an effort to make college more affordable for our students, the Osterlin Library is asking faculty to place a copy of their textbooks on reserve at the library.

The library does not have the funds to buy the textbooks for every class, but if faculty can lend us an extra copy or even an older edition, we can make it available to students during open hours.  This will help students whose financial aid has not yet come through, who have ordered books online which have not yet arrived, or who are disciplined enough to do all of their class reading in the library!

Faculty may drop off textbooks at the library any time.  Please indicate your name, your class name and number, and length of check-out time (usually 2-hours in-library use.)  If you have questions, contact Rochelle Hammontree at 5-1064 rhammontree@nmc.edu
